The Derby.. Post Match

well i don't know ...we were leading twice , mirallas should have been sent off, yet obviously we needed a late equaliser to earn a point so i guess we should be happy to take it . We missed some glorious chances (just no excuses from allen ) but had to rely on mingolet a number of times. To the point where i have no idea why rodgers didn't do something to change it, well unless moses for lucas was his master plan to get us back in control of possession.

And as i said in the match thread , i don't for the life of me understand why we just sit back and try to defend these leads . Don't get me wrong i don't expect us to go all kamikaze but do we really need to sit so deep and try and hit them on the break so early in the game ? We've done it all season to mixed results.

And again , we need to sort ourselves out against the top 6/7 teams. In isolation this isn't a bad result but when you see our record overall against the top teams it's woeful . In such a tight season these big games are massive .
Moses came on for Allen, Sturridge for Lucas.

Everton look a very good team. Watching them today made me think that despite all the money we've spent, the gap between us and them isn't that significant and probably boils down to us having Suarez.

that's probably the gap between us and most the teams 6th-20th !!

And when they inevitably lose Lukaku? He can't possibly be replaced.

If it werent for Minger he might have had 4 or 5.
Lukaku? Apart from the deflected free-kick? My bad then must have been late on where chances came by the minute.

Delofeu seemed the major culprit to me.

Agger had him completely locked down first 45, and he swapped side after the break but still didn't get much done. A true great striker then pops up and score two. One was a lucky break and the other was down to beeing marked by Johnson from a corner.

My only question is, why did Johnson and Flanagan, of all people, were assigned to guard Lukaku at the corner from which he scored?

I hope Rodgers gives Flanagan another start at LB next week. Played very well today, surpassing all expectations. Definitely deserves to be rewarded for his work. I think he only got beaten twice the whole game, once by Mirallas in the first half and then by Delofeu late in the second. Didn't make any mistakes, and even tried to get forward a couple of times.

2 massive game changes for me;
Red card for Mirallas
Allens miss
Both would have won us the game.

Infuriating that we looked desperate to throw it all away and kept giving them the ball.
Studges goal could mean a very important point in the end but we should have won this despite our 2nd half.
We didnt deserve to lose.

Lukaku would probably have won Chelsea the league this year so congrats to Everton for getting him but what on earth was Mourinho thinking.

Anyway, I liked the response the team gave after going down 3-2.
We dont want to lose. Everton hadnt conceded a goal at home in 530 mins, we scored 3.

Mignolet MOTM. Flanno was also very good.
Sakho should have played. Gerrard and Johnson were missing.
We desperatly need a top midfielder. Hope we sign one in January.

With Jose out injured (surgery?) and Cissohko being shite, he's got a good chance.

I don't think we ended up with Johnson on Lukaku because of a switch; more like some stupid assignments by whoever was supposed to organize the defence.

Exactly. That was a colossal failure of judgement by someone. I just felt sorry for Flanno trying to jump with Lukaku, he never had a chance.

Especially as he only ended up jumping with him because Glojo had lost him.

It could mean two things. It was an oversight / mistake, or the CB who should have been watching Lukaku ducked and didn't want to take up the responsibility of marking him. Johnson was absolutely terrible nonetheless in that situation though, make no mistake about it. Didn't even try to defend.

Hard to pick out one incident in a game that had 7 million, but Allen's miss was pivotal.

Draw was fair.

Brilliant game of football mind you.

Yep, that shot goes in I think we win 99 times out of 100.

You watch on that stream?

Apart from the miss, I though Allen was quite useful today.

I agree, but the miss was horrendous and that's all people will focus on.

Of greater concern is how we conceded 3 goals, and got opened up so badly it could have been 10. Whilst both were individually ok, I'm not sold on the Agger-Skrtel pairing. Neither of them is a leader really, and they both get dragged and pulled away from each other too easily for my liking.

  • Lukaku's performance wasn't nearly as good as it's being made out to be, but I guess on a psychological level, his presence in attack helps the rest of his support get space, which is partially why they had so much attacking threat.
  • Agger to the bench for Sakho next week, Sakho is a better CB in every facet at this point, and he's on terrific form as well. I've been less than convinced by Skrtel in the past, but he did more than enough this week to retain his place.
  • Flanagan has played himself into the side, and I don't know how long Glenjo will be in the first team either if he keeps yo-yo'ing in form
  • We play Hull, Norwich, and West Ham now, which is ample opportunity to try some of our options out.
  • Hendo was wasted playing wide, Allen was okay outside of the missed chance. Sucks that he missed it, but he's a deeper lying player so it's to be expected. Wrong match for Allen to come back into the team though, next week would have been better.
  • Suarez fantastic on the free kick, and otherwise looked dangerous. Looked like he was struggling for about 20 minutes after he got hurt.
  • Gerrard had a few fantastic moments, and a few terrible ones. I don't know if we have the options to take him out of the side though, even if we want to.
  • I would have liked to see Coutinho be more aggressive in his play, there were a few times where it seemed we(as a side) were too happy to just retain possession instead of pushing the ball. Every time we decided to slow the pace down, we just gave the ball away, and Everton countered. We're a much better side in counter attack, and Coutinho is a big part of it. Took his chance well.
  • Studge did his thing after coming on,which is more than we can say for our subs in years past. Hopefully he's healthy.
  • Moses drew a couple of key free kicks. If we're playing this formation, I think he has to start on a wing.
  • Mignolet was fantastic again, we would have conceded double if Reina was still in goal. Proving the doubters wrong, and well on his way to establishing himself as a quality player. If he keeps this up, he could get some important minutes in Brazil for nation too.
  • Overall probably a good result. They had more attacking threat, we had more good chances, keeper inclusive. Some important games coming up in quick succession, from which we have to take max points if we want to continue to be in the thick of things. Difficult matches are coming, we need to sort our issues out quickly

I thought we could win that game going in but on reflection we were really lucky to come away with a point. They missed chance after chance in the 2nd half and we just kept standing off them letting them play through us. Once again our dreadful midfield was wailed out by our superb strikers. Its become very obvious we need much better quality in the centre of the pitch, Barkley was walking through us all day.

If we dont sign a quality midfielder in Jan we can forget about a top 4 finish, Gerrard is no longer capable or good enough to start every game and the other 3 are all 6 out of 10 players at the moment, decent at a couple of things but not really great at anything, whats worse is its difficult to see how any combination of our midfielders can form a balanced team.

Its alright saying how great we are when we smash Fulham but we wont keep getting away with performances like the one we put in today or at Newcastle. We were really lucky today no doubt about it.

On the plus side, we never have to see Cissohko again and Mignolet was immense, even if his distribution is still poor.

It's like on this year's FIFA where I always end up with a Ribery/Coutinho type marking a CB.

Yeah, it's odd, cos we had a fair few changes but they should have won, & opened us up time & again.

I feel Rodgers is almost in the Kevin keegan psyche of 'score one more than you' at the moment.

It's relatively logical in a way, cos most of the league is that bad that we will end up getting a fair few points, but I'd like to see us be more pragmatic & play keep ball once we score a lot more than we try to do.

If you switched the two goal keepers they would have battered us comfortably, they were better than us all over the park

It was a Red card for Mirallas every day of the week - horrendous decision not to send him off. Studs up, on/above the knee, instant red.

That miss was the nail in the Allen coffin, score and we win and his confidence is sky high. You can see his confidence is shot now.

Ming - 9 - superb goalkeeping. Loses one point for his continuing failure to be able to kick a moving ball straight.
Flanno - 8 - I was horror struck at his inclusion and astonished by his performance. Well done lad.
Agger - 5 - we were caught out with our CBs upfield time and again, no CB in sight for Lukaku's goals and Agger almost gifted possession and almost a goal on two occasions. How the hell Sakho didn't start is beyond me. 3 goals against says it all.
Skrtel - 4 - See Agger above ... and add leaving the Barkley shot that Mignolet miraculously saved and he looked away from the cross that led to their first goal.
Johnson - 6.5 - some good some bad but he needed more support from MF which he didn't get.
Lucas - 8 - did what he had to do and did it well.
Allen - 6 - horrendous miss has sealed his fate.
Gerrard - 6.5 - tired but still battling and his long passing frequently put them on the back foot and us on the attack.
Coutinho - 7 - having only Suarez ahead of him stunted his skills but he is great in possession and you could see Everton were worried whenever he was involved.
Henderson - 7 - excellent first half and chased and harried them into mistakes. Not so much in the 2nd half and was stunted moving into the 'Lucas-like' position.
Suarez - 8 - excellent game as usual but should have put that easy header away and won us the match.

Moses - 6 - cameo
Sturridge - 8 - a danger from the moment he stepped on the pitch. It was then we put the frighteners on them and could/should have won it.

Rodgers - 5 - the wrong team selection cost us the full 3 points. redeemed himself slightly with the substitutions.

We have no choice our midfield is dreadful and our strike force is exceptional, we are just playing to our strengths. We played 5 midfielders today and still got totally over run, we need better options because currently we only look competent against poor sides
