As you say, Xabi has not ever been "in danger of being the best player on the planet," but I would say it's pretty unarguable that he has been one of the 2 best deep-lying playmakers of the last 10 years, together with Pirlo. Given how rare and special this position is in world football, it shows what a special player we had. Unfortunately any hope of a comeback to Liverpool now seems to be over. He'll always be remembered by our fans though.
Ancelotti built the greatest team of his career around Pirlo and he was not going to repeat Milan's mistake by letting Alonso go. They have Illaramendi and Modric, but Alonso is still irreplaceable.
