Tricky one, this. Do we give opportunities to some of the better youngsters and squad players (Pacheco, Kelly, Poulsen, Aquilani) who need games, and give the likes of Gerrard, Carra, Mascher et al a rest before the City game? Or is it more important to get our best players used to functioning as a team, and to win the tie in the first leg so we can rest/rotate in the away match?

The team could be anything, frankly, but I'd maybe go for something like this:

Reina

Kelly - Skrtel - Agger - Aurelio

Poulsen - Gerrard

Maxi - Cole - Pacheco

N'Gog

A lot depends on the Cole situation. If we appeal, his suspension will be postponed, won't it? Meaning he'd be available for the City match? In that case, I'd play him and Gerrard together, at least for the first 50-60 mins. If not, we need to think about how we'll line up for the City game. Who would play no10 - Stevie? Maxi? Aquilani?

Thoughts please...

I'd be happy with that, but I'd consider resting Gerrard and giving Aquilani a game.

The only issue really is that Maxi/ Cole/ Pacheco is a bit lacking in power, so I'd probably play Jova again instead of one of them.

I think Reina needs to get back on the field as soon as possible. If we drop/rest him, it'll just be preying on his mind until the City game.

As for Torres... it depends on his fitness really. Maybe a 30-min sub appearance would do him more good than starting the game? It also seems unfair to drop N'Gog given his current goalscoring run.

Yeah, they're all pint-sized and not overly quick. I'd probably give Babel a chance in that case, rather than Jovanovic. Try him on the right, with Maxi on the left maybe.

I can't wait to see how we'll address the game with Poulsen in the team instead of Masher.

He's not going to fill Mashers boots and it would simply be unfair to ask him to as no-one in the world could pull that off really, but I'm guessing that he'll stabilize our defensive midfield with Poulsen beeing a slightly more commanding presence physically and more of a defensive midfielder in the old meaning of the word. The Hamann-way if you like.

Don't get me wrong I'll miss Mashers maurauding runs and crazy-like workmanship in the middle of the park as much as the next man but it's not always equally productive from a team perspective. He leaves gaps now and then and is often committing rather needless fouls in dangerous areas too.

I couldn't help to notice that a lot of praise went Mashers way from the stands in one particular incident where he hassled Diaby I reckon it was without winning the ball however due to three far to rash challenges. The fans love that kind of energy and I do so too but sometimes it's not really helping us.

My bet is that we'll be able to see more of the ball and push our backline futher up the field with Poulsen in the team as players like Gerrard and Cole would be able to push further forward. It's equally important however that our central defenders are not standing to far back on our own half which was the case in the first 45 minutes last night.

Surely Mascherano has an agreement that he won't be picked for our European games so as not to render himself cup tied in the CL should he end up moving.

I doubt we'd want to cup tied Insua or Aquilani, and Masch may still be injured:

Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Aurelio/Kelly
Gerrard Poulsen/Lucas
Maxi Cole Pacheco
N'Gog

Poulsen isn't registred in time I think.

And we have submitted Mascher as one of the 25..

Maybe Torres for N'Gog to give him game time before the City game, I can see Agger being rested as he had a few issues yesterday with fatigue. Aurelio needs a game (if fit), and I'm guessing we won't play Masher (so it doesn't effect his transfer fee) and Poulsen isn't registered. Cole will play due to his ban and Maxi, Kelly and Aquilani need a game.

I don't think Agger had any problems with fatigue Mark - he was simply dizzy suffering from a blow to his head.

I reckon you're right however that he'll be rested.

You're hoping we get knocked out then?

We should play the back ups.

Jones

Kelly Kyrgiakos Wilson Aurelio

Maxi Poulsen Aquilani Babel

Pacheco

Ngog

Well that's the lineup I'd play on football manager 2011.

--------------Reina

Johnson-Skrtl-Kelly-Aurelio

-------Aqua--Poulsen

Maxi----Pacheco--Cole

I think Reina should start so that the arsenal slip up doesnt get a chance to prey on his mind, Kelly deserves a run as does Pacheco, Cole will miss the next 3 league games so he should play to keep match sharp. Poulsen will need game time too as will Aqua, if the tie is in the balance Gerrard Torres and Kuyt sould be on the bench

I'm not hoping we lose a game, but I do think it's in our interest to play the kids in the early rounds.

The Europa League is an unwelcome distraction for the first team as far as I'm concerned, and I think it's better suited to giving our kids the chance to play good competitive football, in a trophy which they will care about.

A long run in Europe, which this will inevitably be, always affects domestic form, and I don't think we have that kind of luxury with no money and with City and Spurs overtaking us last season. Lets get back where we belong.

We never do though and the Hodgson needs an early exit from Europe like he needs a hole in the head.

I expect to see a bit of rotation, but I'd be amazed if he fielded a complete B team.

Agger and Mascher are out. Concusion and a minor muscle strain.

Roy has said that Torres will be more involved aswell.
