'Years ago if you were an England centre-forward you would be regarded as one of the best in the land'

that was before rickie lambert was a fucking england striker

Did someone point out to that dozy aul twat Redknapp, that the current England centre forward is one of the players keeping Lambert out of the fucking team.

Is that Niall Quinn stat about Balotelli providing 1 assist in 70 games at Man City true?

If so, wow.

According to transfermarkt, Nial Quinn can eat his own balls. This is his performance data per club (all competitions). 8 in 80 isn't that great, but still it's way better than 1 in 70.

The green ball column is for assists; the one next to it is for yellows.

For the Premier League alone, he had 20 goals and 4 assists in 54 games.

Poor Harry Redknapp:

"The one player I feel sorry for in all this is Rickie Lambert.

"He fulfilled a dream going back to his hometown club in the summer. But he is likely to be third choice behind Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli.

"That makes me sad - and worries me. Years ago if you were an England centre-forward you would be regarded as one of the best in the land and wouldn't be left on the bench hoping to get 15 minutes at the end of a game when your team is 3-0 up."
............

What year is he living in? The days of Fowler, Shearer, Owen, Sheringham etc are well and truly over.

Years ago when you were England centre forward, you could also be in Division Two top scoring for Wolves. Or scoring in single digits in 11 of your 13 club seasons in the Premier League during the time when you were representing the country. Or you could be Jermain Defoe, the man who needed a million shots.

In other words, shut the fuck up Redknapp.

Those 80 appearances only average out to around 55 minutes each by the way. The league numbers also roughly the same.

Great work. I've heard that one assist stat from a few sources, perhaps first from the Guardian, so nice to see it countered.

Erm, but the actual stats, as opposed to the media bullshit stat cited by Quinn, suggest he assisted much more than that. Read the posts above Dreamy.

8/80??

That's horrific just a little less horrifc than 1/70

I really hope he transforms like some crazy goal scoring, hard working committed butterfly but I just don't see it happening.

Would love to be proved wrong.

It is a lot less horrific. One is an assist rate of one in seventy, the other, a much more acceptable one in ten. Couple that with the stats for his time at Inter and AC Milan, where he has a pretty respectable assist rate. In other words, the one in seventy 'stat' is a nasty and pejorative slur, and one should not colour any thinking person's judgement of the player.

Balotelli (last 2 seasons) vs Sturridge vs Suarez

Some Pros and some Cons ... but the cons are nowhere near as bad as is being made out. Note since Balotelli was subbed on/off a lot at Milan I've compiled this over a 90 minute metric not per game or total.

It was that idiot Stelling who started highlighting that supposed stat and then everyone was at it.
As they say back home, don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. That stat illustrates peoples' opinions of Mario so well that it's too good not to repeat.

If you look at the breakdown of Balotelli's time in Man City, quite clearly, the final season drags his stats down. He was clearly more of a goal scorer for City than an assist man.

However, if you look at his stats for both Milan teams, his assists rate is actually very close to Van Persie's at either Arsenal or the Mancs:

The stats before and after City don't point to a selfish player to me. After a slow start at Inter in the assists column in the first 2 seasons (averaging 2 or 3 assists, but remember he was 17 / 18 when he started there), he finished joint-third in the team with 6 assists in the league in his final season there.

Then he moved to City where he actually improved his goalscoring rate but had a decline in assist numbers. I don't think adaptation to the league or team was the issue, because then you would expect his scoring rate to fall too. No idea why his assist numbers went down - could be down to how his role was defined, or him getting fewer touches due to the other players on that team, or him feeling he needed to score more in a team of stars, or him being just a headcase. Who knows.

Anyway, when he moved to AC Milan, the assist numbers went back up again. Third in assists in the team (league only) the first season he was there (4 assists), and followed that up by finishing joint-top in assists in the team (league only) with Kaka (6) last season. His scoring rate improved too after his move to Milan.

Did he forget about the existence of Daniel Sturridge, you know, that England centre forward?

Wise words from Shay Given

Given thinks tabloid tales of Balotelli's alleged indiscretions are exaggerated.
"A lot of stuff you read about Mario is pie in sky, or firework in the sky," he said. "I was with him at City. He is just a big kid. He does silly things in the changing room and winds people up."

Liverpool have sought assurances from Balotelli about his commitment and off-field behaviour and ex-City keeper Given, currently with Aston Villa, thinks Rodgers is the man to bring out the best in him.
"Balotelli is in his mid-20s," said the former Republic of Ireland keeper. "The penny is going to drop that he needs to grow up and focus on football. Brendan Rodgers is a great manager and will sort him out."
Given added that if Manchester United target Angel Di Maria is worth £60m, then £16m for Balotelli is a "bargain".
"He is an Italian international and I think it is a great deal," said Given.
Kilbane also believes Rodgers will bring out the best in Balotelli.
"The amount of dysfunctional kids Brendan Rodgers had to nurture when at Chelsea," he said.
"There were question marks over Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling when they went in at Liverpool and look where they are now."

I saw Alan 'dull as fuck' Curbishley questioning the signing earlier. He then confused himself by saying on the plus side is the price, and that he has PL experience. But, ..drone drone, blah, blah *throws self out the window*
