Sun 21 - return of Rafa

He won us the Champions League - which is probably the greatest footballing night half the fans in the stadium will have ever witnessed.
He donated an unprompted amount of money to the HJC upon leaving the club.
And he was Manager of our club for an extended period of time.

If all or any of the above aren't enough to warrant the respect and admiration of the famed Anfield crowd, then football can go and fuck itself.

Spot the irony anyone?

Anyway, he shouldn't and won't get any stick, a round of applause and a single chant of his name would suffice. Then fuck him, I hope him and his team get hammered.

I'd like to believe he'll be warmly received by the crowd. I'd chant his name if I was there.
I remember the reception Ray Clemence got when he came back to Anfield for the first time with Spurs in May 1982. The Kop game him the warmest reception. Then we went on to win 3:1 and nail the title down.
I hope Rafa gets a similar reception and then we beat those Blue cunts and beat them well. I'm sure he'd love this scenario to happen... 😉

We were being knocked out of the Champions League by giants such as Strasbourg and FC Basle before Rafa came along; suddenly under Rafa we're beating Barca, Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter, AC Milan (i.e. the best in Europe) and winning the CL. He gave our club back it's credibility at the top echelon of the game despite the fact he couldn't replicate the European form in the League.....apart from our 2nd place finish in 2009. We also qualified for CL every season during his tenure bar the last season.

Rafa is without a shadow of a doubt a LFC legend and will get the reception he deserves.

Did you not know that all of that was achieved through sheer idiocy and blind luck?

What Ryan says - he'll get a great reception and rightly so. Regardless of what people think he managed us to a Champions League win and another final. Funnily enough the second final which we lost we were the better side as well. When Rafa went I believed it was time for him to go but I've never wished him any malice. I actually quite like the man but I think he's a dick for going to Chelsea. Some people on here have just become bitter and twisted parodies of their true selves - they should try supporting Everton - it may suit them better.

No, but I wouldn't have picked the team that got the draw away to Juve either.

Not to mention getting us through the other games in the other rounds, still less doing it all again two years later (though he ballsed the final up).

The reception Ged got when he came back with Villa pretty much finished him off with their fans. It must be a tricky situation for such a figure, but by this stage Rafa must hate Chelski's fans so much he'll probably relish their fury as the Kop sings his name.

Indeed, as he'll relish the home fans' support for its own sake.

He'll then go on to make life extremely difficult for us. We'll be hard put to it to win that one.

You just know the LFC fans are going to make a point of it just to wind the Chavs up.

See, I don't think it will be just for that reason. Whatever view one takes of Rafa's abilities and achievements (or indeed his payoff, before anyone starts on that) I don't believe there's any reasonable doubt about his love for the club, and my bet is the vast majority of fans will recognise that.

Anyone who boos him is an idiot and he deserves alot more than just a round of applause, he won us trophies and gave us big ears back for good. He had his flaws and everything but he also continued the tradition of winning silverware and he stamped his authority on Europe for us.

He deserves a rapturous reception, Chelsea on the other hand deserve to be booed everytime they have the ball, I hope we annihilate them with proper football.

Can a mod add a poll to this thread - options:

warm applaus + chant name
warm applause
silence
boo
I'm gona give him a genuine applause out of respect for a past Liverpool manager then I hope his team has a crap day and he rides one last time off into the sunset.

Oh it won't be just for that reason JJ I'm just saying the Liverpool fans will make a point of it to the Chelsea fans. I bet a Rafa chant followed by a Fuck Off Chelsea FC...betcha, just betcha

I was very close to buying a ticket to the game but work got in the way.

If I was there I'd definitely cheer when he's announced. He turned us into the team to beat in Europe and considering our demise since then I'm very grateful for those years.

I don't think anyone has the balls to boo him at Anfield.

Since when is an opposing manager 'announced'?

What a joke football has become. His own fans hate and boo him. We will cheer him and chant his name to wind them up. He became dead to me the day he went there. I loved him as a man, as a manager and as a champion of us, our club and our city. Over now.

It'll be the usual thing: outrageous gestures, obscene chants and downright peculiar noises, and then Vlad and Portly will sit down.

One praiseworthy feature of the Anfield crowd is that we don't automatically boo former players or managers just because they used to be on our payroll. I think to do so displays small-club mentality. Look at the way the Villa fans consistently booed Downing on Sunday. So in general I think the return of former club people tends to pass without comment, unless the crowd has a particular reason to praise or blame them.

I imagine that Rafa considering what he's done for the club on and off the pitch will be presented by the announcer in some way. Like 'we'd like to offer a special welcome to former manager Rafa Benitez" etc.

Unless George is intent on winding the Chav fans up I seriously doubt it.

How can anyone who supposedly supports this club boo a manager who helped win the European Cup for us for the 5th time against all odds?

I despair at some of the people who supposedly want the best for this club, some of them haven't got a clue what it means to support Liverpool Football Club it seems.....

You've done it now - Gerrard will be blubbing!

So take a look at me now,
There's just an empty space,
There's nothing left here to remind me,
Just the memory of your face,
So take a look at me now,
Coz there's just an empty space,
And you're coming back to me it's against all odds,
And that's what I've got to face.

I think Fernando Torres and Michael Owen might disagree with that. A huge part of it might be due to the fact that good players in the past rarely looked to move to other clubs to improve their prospects.

So Torres won't be booed then?

I'd love to see us win and then the crowd give a big Benitez song at the end just to really wind up the Chelsea fans!
