Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson wants Aston Villa midfield general Stiliyan Petrov as the shock replacement for transfer-seeking Javier Mascherano.

Hodgson admires the Bulgarian star's style and is ready to pay around £7 million for him as he looks to cash in on Argentinian Mascherano by selling him to Inter Milan coach Rafa Benitez.

The Kop are looking to land both Petrov and right back Luke Young in a surprise double raid as they try to bring in seasons professionals for a demanding campaign.

Petrov, 30, is one of the Premier League's most respect operators and a key man for Martin O'Neill who brought him to Villa from Celtic where he was also a legend.
The Bulgarian star is aware of the Liverpool interest and could be keen on a move to Anfield - although Villa are desperate to keep their squad together despite so many being wanted men.

Hodgson wants a proven midfield schemer to play an anchor role in the Liverpool side. He expects Mascherano to move on, which would leave just Brazilian Lucas Leiva for that position - with Xabi Alonso never properly replaced.

Petrov may not seem the most charismatic capture, but he is in the right mould for Hodgson who plans to put his own well-drilled imprint on the Anfield side this season and beyond.

FFS. I hope this isn't true.
I rate Petrov but he's 30 come on, there are younger options.

Can't we just learn from the alonso situation that we need quality replacements Woy!

Can't we just learn from the plethora of spurious 'links' during the transfer season that 99% of them aren't true FPI !

Indeed. We should prefix all transfer related posts with something like "I know it's probably bollocks but for the sake of argument...". It'd be a lot more obvious then that people are just responding to the possibility of something being true.

clearly no player is good enough for Liverpool these days. I particularly rate Petrov!

Would you play Petrov instead of Lucas? I would. Mind you...

so would I, that would leave millions left from masher sale to buy someone else up top.

Remember Gary MAc, a few season would be fine we don't have to buy young people all the time

And Petrov is in the same class as Gary Mac? That would be a resounding no.

I don't think a better defensive midfielder than Mascherano exists. Therefore, however much was available to Hodgson in funds, Mascherano's replacement isn't going to be as good as him.

That's true, but Petrov isn't primarily a holding midfielder anyway. Last year I wanted us to bring Barry Ferguson in as short term cover, available for 1m from Rangers- he would have been just what we needed to have a calm experienced player in CM. He had a fantastic season with Birmingham as it was.

So I recognise the value in players we wouldn't normally consider, but I see no value whatsoever in Petrov.

Thats the thing though, we don't need a player that is exaclty like Mascher. We don't need a player that only can operate as a holding midfielder imho.

I'd rather get a player that certainly can hold his own about the defensive responsibilties, but also posses some skill going forward. Cause let's face it, we're a team that attacks more than we defend. That should be the case at least.

4-4-2 with Parker and Gerrard central would be ace.

About the Petrov link, it's BS. As is most of the stories and players that are linked with us. I e Scharner and Beattie....

I don't see a lot of difference between them Doc.
Stilian would be a calm & experienced CM but with more Premiership exposure than Ferguson.

We should use our managers contacts to get that young prospect Murphy from Fulham.
[/quote]

LOL!

Murphy does look good playing for Fulham. Despite his obvious skills, however, I wasn't sorry when he left because he always tended to slow our attacks down by dwelling on the ball.

He's not a bad player, but I wouldn't pay £7m for him, given his age. He's had a couple of really good seasons with Villa though and has been instrumental to the way they play. Underrated, but I still wouldn't pay that much.

Id much prefer scharner than petrov on the fact that they are about the same age and scharner would be free, and that 7mil on petrov could be spent on a better striker or left back

Re: Stiliyan Petrov for £7m

There's loads of errors in the article.

If a manager has little money, then he's likely to be looking at prospects or experienced oldies, and we're opting for the later. Still, I'd like to think there were some players in the mid-twenties we could sign relatively cheaply.

If there is anything to these links, and I hope there isn't, it could be an indication that Roy is under immediate pressure to stabilise the squad, and hasn't the time to build up a younger side. His 3 year contract is another obvious sign. He knows he's only got one shot at this and he as a result, he's not likely to blow the little money he has on 'potential'. It's all going on 'Prem-proven' players who he knows he can rely upon. The worrying thing here, is I bet Rafa used similar logic in selecting Lucas over Aquilani.

You clearly just hate him because he played for Celtic.

Barry would have been able to play the Alonso role about a million times better than Lucas. Plus he hates Celtic. All in all, a good spud.
