Sterling impasse continues

of course not everyone is.

Just the ones you'd expect to be easily influenced

What's the club rhetoric though? It seems that we're trying to build a young squad within a sustainable wage structure, so I guess we're acting within that. I'd always say that's the sensible starting position, but you have to have some flexibility.

From the outside it's difficult to tell, it seems like Sterling is being a dick, or is he trying to get his just reward for a player of his caliber and potential, who's given alot to us over the last two seasons? They need to meet each other partway, but the leaking of info (from both parties) is particularly discouraging.

Ayre's interview where he discussed performance related pay as something that had never been considered before. And now it gets a mention in every half wits post on this impasse

Yeah, I seen one the other day about putting him on £50k per week with bonuses seeing it rise to £200k per week. As if.

He won that award. Best kid in Europe. So he wants best kid in Europe dough. Can't blame him for asking, someone will pay it.

Doesnt help that the entire league has more money than brains and you've got horribly average cunts earning top dollar.
Sterling is at least a very talented player that deserve a decent wedge.

You realise you've just mentioned it too.

I think he is.
Really? Based on what? His goal ratio? His assists? He's good I know that but £50m 'good'..... Don't be silly. He could easily turn into another Shaun Wright Phillips and end up in the championship. Or worse QPR! Obviously I want him to come good and investing in 'potential' is all cool. We'll see..

He'll stay. This negotiation is for big money, he'll be happy with that for a few years.

Then we get to worry about Madrid and whoever wanting him.

I'm continually surprised that his talent gets downplayed. Even when he first broke through to the first team and he was getting a bit of a hard time, I was very impressed.

I may end up being dead wrong but for me Sterling has already demonstrated that he's pretty much got everything in his locker and if things go right for him, he should be a top class player for years to come.

He's 20 years old and is obviously one of the very few players that Rodgers simply will not do without. He's been played as a no.10 in a diamond, a wide forward, a wing back, a striker... and generally speaking has been good to great in all positions. He's tactically excellent (as demonstrated by being able to play anywhere in any system), links up brilliantly with those around him (see understanding with the likes of Suarez and Coutinho), has a great touch, pace to burn, strong, works hard, can beat people for fun... and his finishing is improving.

The SWP comparison is based on nothing other than the fact that he's small, black and at some point was pigeon-holed as a winger.

If you want to look at goals and assists then consider this - Hazard is widely considered to be one of the best forwards in the game and right now he 10 goals and 6 assists. Sterling has 6 goals and 7 assists in a team that's been goal shy and underperforming for half a season. Not a million miles off.

We invested 20M in Markovic's potential and he currently looks miles off Sterling's level.

Sounds like things are going sour.

[article=http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-transfers-raheem-sterling-wants-5334889]Liverpool have been left reeling by Raheem Sterling’s decision to reject a contract worth £100,000-a-week.

The Reds were certain England winger Sterling would commit his future to the club when they tabled a third offer which senior Anfield sources have confirmed to Sunday Mirror Sport was worth “six figures.”

But Sterling’s advisers know that Real Madrid and Manchester City WILL meet their demands of parity with Kop striker Daniel Sturridge's £130,000-a-week.

They feel that if Liverpool rate the 20-year-old at £50million-plus in the transfer market, then they must pay him wages which match that valuation.

Now, the Kop club’s American owners will have to decide whether to smash the club’s pay structure if they want to avoid another Luis Suarez-style transfer scramble in the summer.

European champions Real and reigning Premier League kings City will lead the chase for Sterling if they are given encouragement.

And, with Jordan Henderson also stalling over a new deal, Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon has some tough decisions to make.

Gordon works closely with club chief executive Ian Ayre, but the decision on whether to increase offers to both Sterling and Henderson will be taken in Boston after the American was tasked with taking a daily overview of the club from the other side of the Atlantic.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is being kept informed about negotiations.

And on Saturday, the Kop boss hinted that the key to keeping Sterling happy will be money and that the winger will be on his way despite having more than two years left on his contract.

Rodgers said: “Ultimately, for players and representatives, a lot of the time it’s about two things – game-time and money.

"You see it throughout football, not just here. A player can be really happy somewhere and be content and settled, and the development of the player can take place.

“As a manager, you want to give everything to the player to help them. But ultimately, if a player or their representative – probably more so their representative – decides that the player needs to move, that is normally what happens.

"Raheem has made 118 appearances and has only just turned 20. We’ve got a really strong relationship but, as I said, it is about more than that unfortunately. It isn’t like 20 or 30 years ago, when people came in and sometimes didn’t even look at the contract before signing it.

“It is a different sport now and it’s just about managing that. All I know is, that when people look at Raheem, it is obvious where his development has taken place and where the next stage should be.”

Rodgers added: “Ian Ayre does a wonderful job here, with the owners, and the model that’s been created is to incentivise deals for young players and not give them too much, too young.

"Of course, you still give them what their value and worth is, but I have seen it with so many young players - real top talents - who are way overpaid, then they disappear.

"It won’t happen here.”[/article]

Hazard takes pens too.

I think Sterling lacks a bit of size, and his shooting from range is poor, but otherwise he's got the lot.

Right now he is quite possibly our best player and he can play 5 of the 10 outfield positions. He has also been voted the best young player in Europe. Understandable if his agent is pushing for a wage rise.

It's a tough one. League has so. Hch silly money, but he's really asking too much. Or his agent is.

The delay now is due to him changing agents.

Shades of owen/Macca in this one...
I think his agent's the same. Left the agency to create his own.
And if that's the reason for any delay, he's not doing his job very well for his client.
But it's obviously not the reason.

We'll be renegotiating his contract in two years time anyway, which makes their demand, if it really is 140k per week, ludicrous.
I doubt even Messi, who was light years ahead of Raheem at 20, was earning half that at the time.

Keni - I agree with most of what you said here but I take exception a little in that I'm comparing him to SWP because he's black. There are many similarities. The last of which I'd compare him to is the colour of his skin. How about these instead?

1) He's young
2) He's small
3) He's a forward/attacking midfielder but also played as a wing back I believe
4) He's English
5) He's had a good start to his international career and has rightly been lauded
6) He's been courted by big clubs very early in his career.

SWP was sold to Chelsea for £21m back in 2005 which was a hell of a lot back then for a 22 year old. His career has since nosedived. Surely you can see the similarities? I'm not for a minute suggesting he will end up like SWP. I'm an LFC fan after all. I obviously want him to stay and come good. All I'm saying is if someone came in with an offer for £50m I'd take it. Is it worth smashing a wage structure to pander to some greedy twat who has had 2 good seasons? Give him a pay rise. He deserves it but not at the risk of undermining the club.

Not as bad when all the quotes haven't been edited down to make things seem as grim as possible but still... Rodgers is sounding a little desperate.

I wouldnt exactly say desperate. We also keep forgetting that Sterling has 2,5 years left on his contract.
I dont see him moving to Real but I guess he could be courted by City and big bucks.

I'm fairly relaxed about this myself tbh. I dont see Hendo doing anything but sign and I think Sterling will do the same.

SWP was barely more than a one trick pony. I said so at the time.

Sterling is so much more than that & has a massive career ahead of him.

My point is Chelsea didn't think so and spunked 21m on him as they obviously saw potential in him as well.

For the record I agree with you that Sterling is better though. Would you take 50m for him if he was still haggling over wages?
