Sterling impasse continues

Hard to tell what wages are going to become with new TV deals and City being allowed to sponsor themselves without sanction. They are gonna be massive obviously but how massive?

City were sanctioned, weren't they? I still think they'll rein themselves in from now on, guess we'll see this summer.

Re wage levels, I was reading the swiss ramble analyis of our last accounts this week, and hadn't realised how many clubs are now reporting profits - generally much bigger than ours, too - with wage growth now significantly down on revenue growth. So it seems something is restraining them in a way that hasn't happened before.

IMO it's something that shouldn't really need to be considered for Sterling's contract though, because these deals are only ever effective for a couple of seasons anyway before they're due for renegotiation. We need to be thinking in terms of what he could get elsewhere. And, tbh, what we could get elsewhere, too.

The Mail has a bit more sensationalist view.

Need to sign both Hendo and Sterling on long term deals. Doesnt matter if its shelved until the summer. Both players needs to focus on the run in.

I'd pay Sterling 120k. Probably even more. He's worth it. Losing him isnt an option.

Depends on the offer and likelihood of securing an adequate replacement, IMO.

I'm still left wondering why Uefa spend years bringing in complicated new rules, making a massive song and dance about them, fine various clubs for breaching them, including City and PSG to the tune of £50m (suspended), and then at the crucial moment, let themselves be completely emasculated by the very clubs the sanctions were specifically designed to thwart.

What kind of long game are they playing there?

You can't seriously be asking that?

It's designed to keep the status quo as it is & make it ever harder for teams to break into, which it will do over the next few years, esp as the gap between the haves (cl qualification teams) & the have nots, grows.

Pay him. That or lose him and try to replace him for someone with the same talent and potential who will want less than what he's asking for anyway. Good luck with that one.

That's the same thing as saying the rules will have a significant effect, which is what I was saying. The motive doesn't matter, and I wasn't positing one.

They've clearly got to pay him what he asks for. 140k seems a bit steep but I guess with Johnson and Gerrard off in the summer that frees up some salary cash.

If he went in the summer what do you think he'd realistically go for? 30M?

I think it'd depend on whether someone like Real decide to move for him, as has been rumoured. In that case I could see it going north of £50m.

That's fucking silly money though don't you think? He's only just turned 20. Good though he is - he's not worth £50m!

Out of interest who do you think is better Coutinho or Sterling? Personally at the moment I'd go with Coutinho. Great that he's signed at least!

Madrid wont come for him, they already have Jese on the bench. I think Jese is more developed than Sterling as of right now. plus Sterling is not marketable at all, at least as of now. So I am relaxed about Sterling. He will sign eventually.

I think Sterling's more of a 'special' talent in terms of his attributes and has the higher ceiling. Coutinho is probably the better player right now, although I feel a bit sorry for Sterling as he's had to be quite self-sacrificing this season to fight fires in a struggling team.

I'm certain he's an elite level young player, so £50m plus looks about right to me.

Not marketable? Is that for real? He's a marketing man's dream. His image is actually one of the main reasons I could see Real moving for him, even though he's not quite ready for that level.

Durex and Trojan are battling out for his image rights at the moment

Bascombe seems to think Sterling reps want 150k a week.
That would mean a jump from todays 1,6 mill pr year to 7 mill.

If Sterling sees his long term future at Anfield his agent should stop leaking stories to the media.
Not doing him any favours.
Shame it cant be kept inhouse.

I'm hoping we'll meet somewhere inbetween. 120-125k or an adjustment regarding how much is incentive based.

If we bought a player of his quality and age, we would probably have to pay him upwards of £100k per week, so we know realistically that's where it will end up. We're right to haggle, but we can't keep it going on too long, but we shouldn't let him dictate to us how much he's getting either. There's a massive difference between £1.6m a year and £7m.

I always find it interesting how people just adopt whatever the latest club story is into their rhetoric, just like the club want them to.

Instead of saying just get the fucking thing done the fanbase is now talking about performance based pay at a time when the club can't get deals done with two key players.

Pure coincidence I'm sure

There's alot of people saying, "just get the deal done, whatever the cost", you're being a bit selective about people's viewpoints. As always, there's both ends of the spectrum, people don't want us held to ransom, people don't want us to lose a key player, if that tells you anything it's the obvious - deals are complicated.

Yeah, no mention of 2 other key players who have just signed new long term deals, Studge and Coutinho.
But, would you expect anything else from that end mate? Of course not.

I dont care how we structure the deals as long as we get it done and the club isnt held ransom to some ridiculous amount.
We need to get both signed. Losing Sterling and Hendo isnt an option if we want to continue the current development.
