Sterling Deal Complete: 49 million (44 + 5)

We have just strengthen arguably the most likely team to drop out of the top four though, so it could turn out to look a shite deal.

Should he score enough important goals to fire them ahead of us at the end of the season that 35m ish won't look so good.

What if they'd signed Lacazette with some of the cash they'd spent on Raheem?

Say Sterling scores 10 goals, but Lacazette would have scored 20. In that case we've just sold them negative 10 goals and have £35m to replace Sterling's output for us.

Well yeah, but I'm looking at things as they are, not what might be. We know sterling is a proven quantity in this league *watches Ross get very red in the face*, so we have strengthened them.

What we do with the cash & what they might have done with the cash is very much an unknown quantity.

It is fair to say that we don't have a great track record in recent years that fills anyone with confidence though.

What the fuck are you on about?

if a player wants to go you let them go. keegan, owen, suarez etc there will be others and strling does not and never will come into that category of players.

however for some on here its like we have just sold messi.....get a fucking grip.

Its tiresome people saying we've sold our best player. We sold our POTENTIALLY best player

Coutinho is our best player, and more than likely will be for a good few years

Yeah thanks cloggy - Me and FFF have already been through this. It has been resolved to my satisfaction. Your grammar services are not required at this time.
Couldn't resist the pedantic bit.

I saw you had already been corrected as I read on but was far too lazy to go back and delete it.

It's kinda tiresome to say he wasn't. It's arguable to say Coutinho is better, there's not much in it.

He's certainly was our most valuable. And we have to put a stop to the trend of selling our best players, Coutinho will be next to want out, especially if he has a better season this year.

Its obviously a massive blow to lose one of our best players, and ideally one who could have kicked us on to the next level with his continued development.

It's also tiresome when people present their opinion as fact.

I don't know if he was our best player or in the top 3 or 5 or 8. The fact is, he is bloody good and we've sold him. Disappointing.

Isn't 'best player' up there with 'best 11'? Surely a player can only be the best in his own position. Put another way, your best striker isn't going to be your best full-back. Obviously we may be the exception to that rule...

Its easier to say that than "best at what he does in his position, when compared to what others do in their own position"

It's not unknowable what City would otherwise have done.

In fact it's almost completely predictable. They'd have signed the next very good young attacker on their list.

Someone like Lacazette, Felipe Anderson, Reus, Goetze.

The chances are they'd have been cheaper and better than Sterling.

So it's actually only in a very unrealistic hypothetical reality we can look at this and say we've strengthened them, as compared to their position if they hadn't signed him.

Man City relax add-on demands to seal Raheem Sterling deal - sources

Manchester City finally made the breakthrough in their pursuit of Liverpool's Raheem Sterling after relaxing their stipulations over add-ons in the most expensive deal ever for an English player, sources have told ESPN FC.

City agreed a fee of £44 million up front and a further £5m payable in add-ons on Sunday in what has been the most protracted transfer of this summer's transfer window.

But, with the two clubs wrangling over how the fee would be paid, sources have told ESPN FC that City relaxed their initial proposal for the add-ons to make it easier for Sterling to meet and ensure Liverpool receive the £49m sum quicker.

The initial add-ons were dependent on City being successful in the Premier League and Champions League, but now City have agreed to pay the additional money when Sterling meets a set number of appearances instead.

As revealed by ESPN FC last month, City's hierarchy had given the green light for the club to meet Liverpool's £50m valuation for Sterling as they had made him one of their top targets this summer.

The Etihad club saw their first two bids of £30m and £40m plus add-ons for Sterling rejected by Liverpool as the Merseysiders held out for a fee closer to their valuation. Part of the reason that Liverpool wanted more money up front was the fact that Queens Park Rangers are entitled to a 20 percent sell-on fee from the player's time at Loftus Road.

Sterling joined Liverpool from QPR's academy in 2010 and although he never played a game for the club they inserted the sell-on fee as part of the deal that took him to Liverpool.

It means the Championship club are set for a windfall of £9.8m from the sale of Sterling to City.

Look no one wanted him to leave.
A year ago he was the chosen one. But he ISNT worth 49m no matter what way you shake it.
So it isnt a coup in any shape or form.
Weve done really well with the fee, City might not care about the money but thats not the point. We got 49m for a very good player who by the end of last season was being dropped.

I dont know what the ceiling is for Raheem, do I see a Ronaldo, Messi, Bale in there? No I dont. I see a very good player who will probably improve, but never a 50m player not even close.
And he isnt our best player, Coutinho is our best player. And we have bought a ready made replacement with 20m to spare so I dont get the massive gnashing of teeth. Upshot is he CHOSE to leave, and we got the best deal for the club out of it.

In my eyes he doesnt look that much advanced on Ibe. And Ibe has signed a new deal and is staying at the club right? So we had
Sterling
Ibe
Coutinho
Lallana
Markovic
For those AM berths and now we have
Firmino
Ibe
Coutinho
Lallana
Markovic
Milner (maybe)
And 20m

I think we are doing ok.

Far more concerning is that we still have Mario and Fabio as our Striker options until January or whenever Sturridge is back for 3 months.

Basically I think we got dicked on the transfer, in that we're selling a player we didn't really want to.

However, we didn't get dicked on the price, in that nigh on £50M isn't exactly undervaluing him.

Yeah it sucks that we keep selling our best players, but it is what it is
