Liverpool 3 Southampton 0: Match Ratings

by Ben Johnson | Sep 22, 2018 | 5 comments

THERE’S Mark Hughes there, looking like yer nan got dressed in the wrong wardrobe again.
Alisson: 8

Nothing to do, nothing to do, nothing to do, bang, 92 minutes, smart save down to his right. I love a smart save. Suit and tie.
Trent: 8
Running out of things to say here, really. He is a brilliant, brilliant footballer. L’Equipe rated him the other night and them fuckers don’t give points to anyone. Who the fuck am I to disagree?
Big Joel: 8
He’s a mad fella him. He literally oscillates between really good and shite in the space of a minute. Like a big really good/shite metronome. Passed it to their lad on the edge of our box, Big Virg got him out the shit, the metronome banged across to the really good side and he won the ball, marched up the pitch, set Salah up and then nodded in the corner, just in the nick of time.
That said, we were a bit mad first half, once we boxed our shape he was sound. Looks like his body was made by playing Boy Girl. Remember Boy Girl? Someone drew his sink feet, folded the page over, and passed it on to someone else who drew a giant’s legs, folded it over and passed it on to yer man, who drew a skinny fella’s long body, and so on until we end up with his pea head.

Big Virg: 8
Sweet Jesus, Mary and Joseph, thank fuck for that. Bruised ribs. You can have mine lad, if you need them. Like Prince, I’ll get shut of them bottom ones. Not worth a carrot. Give him some cotton wool clobber la, and let him sleep on a cloud.
Andy Robbo: 8
See Trent above. The two best full backs in the league.
Henderson: 8
Think I’ll give everyone an eight today. Suck it up.

Gini: 8
In loads of space. Overrun a little first half but that was more to do with the shape than anything else.
Sheridan: 8
Can’t half find space, can he? Loved the formation first half. Imagine being Nan head, working all week to plan to close our front three down, when he goes there, you drop here, you block this space, you close there. And then Klopp plays a diamond with this mad little head case at its tip, like a 1920s explorer and your plans are in the bin.
Bit harsh to take him off, but then imagine being Nan head, spending all half creating another plan to deal with the diamond, and Klopp legs Shaqiri and goes back to the three upfront. Hahaha, go and lash some oil of Ulay on lad.
Mo: 8
Scratching for a goal even though he keeps scoring. Was unlucky there today, could have scored six.

Sadio: 8
Horrible to play against. Hard as iron, fast as anything, tricky as fuck. Was great today without hitting top whack.
Firmino: 8
Played well in them little pockets drifting in from the left. Couple of lovely little one twos. Unlucky not to score. Can see with both his eyes. Would love him to have to wear them gigs for the rest of his days.
SUBS
Milner: 8

Come on and was boss.
Naby: 8
Come on and was boss.
Joe Gomez: 8
Come on and was boss.

What he's saying about 'Sparky' looking like yer doddering old nan. Did I just not notice Hughes ageing so much? I saw a clip of him in their prematch presser and couldn't believe it. He seems to have aged so rapidly. These relegation dogfights aren't good for you.

I loved how powerful Matip was last night
Matip did well, made one big mistake during the game when he his a weak pass forcing Van Dijk to make challenge. Other than that his passing and distribution was great and he was solid in defence.

Shaqiri completely fucked up their system yesterday. His willingness to run beyond the front 3 made impossible for them to play any sort of high line and he created acres of space for Salah and Mane to exploit. He will be a very useful player for games where we are going tonhave lots of possession.

That said Southampton were truly dreadful and we beat them while never bothering to get out of 2nd gear.

Defo. We now have a plan B. If teams think they'll defend then we'll just rinse them for forty five minutes with a zillion attackers.

For the Brighton game we played with two DMs and relied on Milner to link everything. Yesterday we looked far more dynamic and got space right across the park.

Once Klopp gets a formation that works with Shaq in the side & we can switch between them without causing chaos in terms of our shape this could be mouth watering.

I think the luxury of having Keita and Shaqiri is that he has the depth to play the attacking pronged midfield three by using either of them, without much difference in quality. That's without AOC who will eventually return. And Shaqiri adds depth to the front three too, along with Sturridge.

The big concern is centre half. A lengthy injury to Gomez or VVD would really fuck us over, regardless of how good Matip was yesterday, beyond the starting two, we've not got much depth in defense. Especially after Lovren's recent antics with his injury and now this perjury thing.

You know what they say about RAAAAAAATINGS? Better late than never!
I usually don't do ratings with matches I can't watch live, but amazingly I managed to get one of those new-fangled illegal streams that you have now. Wonders!

Anyway, quick-capsule review: piece of piss. Granma Hughes didn't really have a team that could hurt us, and after a first-half drubbing, he went into damage-control mode, which was helped by Klopp's bizarre decision to sub off his best player, in order to "control the game and go back to our normal formation".

Fuck off. At 3-0 up you're in control.

But it's a very interesting subject, and one I touched on when discussing the not-transfer of Fekir and continuing mystery of Fabinho. What is Klopp's ideal formation? It seemed clear that an AM/ Central attacking Coutinho-replacement was on his agenda, given he wanted to spend £60m on Fekir. So in an ideal world, was he looking at a 4-3-3 with a number 6 (Fabinho), Number 8 (Keita) and Number 10 (Fekir)?

If so, was Shaqiri playing that "Fekir" role on Saturday? And how come that wasn't our "normal formation"? Or was he referring to Firmino playing wide and Salah more central? It's quite confusing, so hopefully we can talk about it in more detail. ANYWAYYYYYYYYSSS:

Alisson (6) I don't recall him having to do much, as Southampton didn't do much. He looked a little scrappy with the ball at his feet on one or two occasions, but overall kept it pretty simple, and what little threat they posed was dealt with. And another clean sheet. Nice.

TAA (7) I like a reliable full-back, and TAA is proving just that at both ends of the pitch. Nice delivery for the second goal, and looked on his game positionally. Helps that he's fast as fuck and a wicked sharp passer too.

Matip (7) Old 50p-head scored a quite majestic header that made me smile. It's fucking great seeing some of those old-fashioned things go well for Liverpool. You know, all that boring stuff like being able to score from set-pieces and not defending like meffs. While much of the credit goes to Virgil (correctly), Matip - who has never been a favourite for obvious reasons - came into the team fro the rested Gomez and did well. There was a totally shit pass which was more typical Matip, but one upfield charge was glorious to watch. And speedy too.

Virgil (7) Please God let him not be injured. Or ever get injured. Allowed Long one glimpse of goal, but that was fine, because Long is one of the worst finishers to ever play top-level football. Other than that, calm, unruffled and just....reassuringly calm.

Robertson (7) The left-sided Mr Reliable of this promising Liverpool vintage. Love that consistency across the defence. Redmond showed a few glimpses of quality, but they weren't enough to put the little Glaswegian dynamo off his game. Nothing seems to be able to do that, really.

Henderson (6) Started a bit hesitantly, as he did against PSG, but found his form and started to control things against a quick and lively midfield. He seemed happier when Milner was on the pitch, but who wouldn't be? Is this what Klopp was on about? Playing just two CMs as opposed to three? Anyway, solid enough display.

Wijnaldum (7) Glided about midfield doing his usual recycling and retention of possession job, he was consistent and careful in another hard-working metronomic display. Shaded Henderson, but the team's the thing and he did a fine team job.

Shaqiri (8) The steroidal Swiss dwarf finally got his start, and was our best player in the first half, showing impressive speed, skill and technique as he took the opposition apart. Made the first goal with a nice swerving run and shot that was bundled into their own goal by some comical defending, and then gave Salah a goal on a plate with a splendid free-kick that hit the woodwork. will be very disappointed to be hooked at half-time, especially given that the explanation seemed to suggest Klopp doesn't actually trust him in that AM role, and he may have to be happy with being back-up to the front three.

Mane (6) Not quite at his brutally effective best, Mane didn't terrorise them as much as we might have wanted. Played one sumptuous pass and there were a few bits of delightful close control, but he didn't have much goal threat. Quality player, even if he's not at full pelt, and he strolled his way through the second half.

Salah (7) Nice tap-in courtesy of Shaqiri, goal disallowed and tried to score with a backheel. Even below his best, he's a threat and never stopped working and running. Not sure that Firmino enjoyed the job swap quite as much, and I don't think it will be a regular thing, but Salah was a danger throughout. He's going to fucking murder a team soon, with an avalanche of goals just around the corner. (I hope).

Firmino (6) Like many of his team-mates, he didn't really show up in the second-half, as we sat back and so did they. Worked hard enough, and produced a lovely one-two that should have been finished by Salah early on, he was as ever a great outlet and also hounded their defence with his running and interceptions.

We were wide open and all over the place defensively. That's why Soton's first shot on target came in the 93rd minute.

I get the Klopp Shaq thing in the context of smash and grab, then chill coz we've got loads of games. But even using that theory I'd have probs hooked Salah or Mane to give them a break.

Mane and Salah will probably be rested on Wednesday, and Shaqiri will play 90 mins.

I doubt he finds the substitution demoralising.

Id say he was annoyed but he understands the logic. He played well, the game was won and he needs to go again midweek against Chelsea, most of the other starters will probably get a rest bar Allison and Matip so he was the only attacking player who needed to be managed.

Agreed ... plus he did his job and having gone 3..0 up there was no need to risk the team being a bit light in midfield for the entire 2nd half. Good move by Klopp and am pretty sure Shaq will lead the line tomorrow. I personally think Salah or Firminio will be rested to make way.

I imagine Sturridge will lead the line with Shaq on one of the wider roles.
