Parker captained how many times? That's a really forced example. 'Wright has none' - I'm not sure what that even means. Campbell NEVER looked like the kind of captain at the back that England prefer post-Moore. They've gone for shouty, aggressive, visibly bossy types when it comes to defenders - in other words, Terry. It's either been that or star midfielders - Robson, Gerry Francis, Ince, Gerrard - or the top striker - Keegan, Lineker, Owen, Shearer. Campbell's problem was that he was always a quiet, enigmatic, insular loner, on and off the pitch. I've always been strongly against discrimination but Campbell is talking absolute bollocks here. When you compare Campbell's gripes to what Barnes went through, which was genuinely appalling, then really Campbell's whines sound even more 'pathetic' than his view of his own England captains.
I get it. You are incensed by his incessant whinging in his book. But i'm struggling to see what the point of saying "If you compare that to what Barnes went through...." etc is...
Are you saying the FA acted with racial prejudice in one case and not the other? Either way, you are proving what Campbell is alleging not the opposite.
Anyway Sol Campbell was the second youngest England captain ever, and went on to play at least 50 more times since he got that cap... I think he is within his right to feel hard done by and suspect something else was at play here. You have just acted a bit jumpy about the whole thing and have finally arrived at a decent argument when you say you can't think of a more sullen, aloof captaincy candidate, but still there are plenty of examples of players who have been exactly that kind of character chosen to be England captain. Some will argue the current England captain is quite a bit like that.
