So who do we want/expect/hope?

oh so a your scope which included top european experienced managers is allowed to be missed if they were a good player for us in the past.
Yes, if they were seen to have strong leaderships qualities, if they were an attractive manager for players, andof course, if they knew the game inside out. Good player of course doesn't always make good managers. At the end of the day, there's no proven formula for finding a manager, but again, I don't see RM, as a strong up and coming manager.

If Martinez takes over, I bet we'll finish higher than last year in the league.

Cups, not sure, but I'm confident for the league.
In fairness, if Kenny had stayed then I'd bet we would finish higher than last year in the league too.

Dantes, - and that's the thing. Is Martinez an improvement over Kenny. Definitely not.

There's no definitely about it, you just can't say that. Kenny just had us finish 8th with a whole lot of broken records for home losses, lack of goals etc.

Martinez would have to work pretty hard to beat that disaster in his first season (and likely without spending 100m into the bargain).

We're living on past glories at the moment so there's only so much mileage that will get us and it's decreasing every season. This could be the most significant appointment the club ever makes, that's why it is so fucking terrible.

People can say 'Look at Shankly's career before...' but Shankly came to a shitty Liverpool with low expectations. We've lived off his legacy since one way or other. We have a huge status now that needs to be protected, especially following the last few seasons. We need someone who knows how to handle a massive club with huge expectations. And we get this. It's a farce.

i'm excited about the fact that Martinez might get the job. i like everything about him and i think he'll do very well for us.

what saddens me is that a lot of people have the knives in before he's even started and Will think they're justified after the first bad result. why can you not all just get behind him and give him some support instead of this bullshit?

As disliked as they are, both Steve McLaren and Sam Allardyce actually earned the chance to manage bigger clubs. They moved their clubs up the table and got them to cup finals. That's how you should earn the chance to be considered by big clubs. Martinez is a nice bloke who has done fuck all except have a slightly better run of results than Steve Kean had last Christmas. No offence against the bloke but he doesn't deserve to be considered at this stage for LFC. No other so-called big club would dream of appointing him. It's a laughable idea.

if Martintez is appointed, I can't support this club, and I can't support this manager.

Hodgson Part 2. Another uninspiring appointment. Won't attract players, won't get us in CL.

I sympathise. I only continue to support the club because, like syphillis, it's hard to shake off. I'll never feel the same way about it as before. I'm slightly relieved, as all the worry and tension and anxiety won't be missed, but it's still sad. It'll also be fun to be like all the jerks who used to wind me up on here.

Should this come to fruition it is a monumental gamble.

The owners pay the bills so they decide who does what, but they surely must have one eye on protecting their investment; and this just seems a wild gamble. Further failure will stymie a new stadium and better players.

I wouldn't be happy if I were an investor. I also do not believe someone like David Dein would advise this. I'm incredulous.

.

It's a monumental gamble in the same way that a monkey at a roulette table is making a monumental gamble. What it is, is a conceited Bostonian who knows a bit about baseball making a stunningly arrogant and misinformed decision about English football.

I hope he gets a fair chance if he gets the job.
Sounds like he wont by reading some of the posts on here.

If he is appointed, I desperatly want him to succeed and humble pie can be dishedoutfrom so many people.

Is it a gamble? Of course it is, massive. But why not try something new? I'm tired of going backwards.

Exactly, it's a massive decision as we are at a tipping point to go either a little forward or a lot back. There's smaller gambles out there. I am a massive proponent of patience for FSG, but this decision is not the decision of the best and the brightest. Anyway, seems like it's not even confirmed, so I won't get all wound up again until it's confirmed.

Didn't Whelan mention a few months ago before Wigan's incredible sequence of results that he was going to sack Martinez or spoke about giving him the boot? How fortunes can change within a short period of time. I'm slightly edging towards localny and gkmacca's camp if it does happen. I'll always support the club mind. And whoever will be in charge of our first game will have my full support regardless of my personal opinion of whether they are good enough.

Don't think so.

I'm pretty sure he said he wouldn't sack Martinez, even if they went down.

I think I've got more European experience than Martinez by virtue of having been to a few european finals and quite a few matches. Maybe it's not too late to apply. Has he ever been to a cup final of any sort? Not as a player or manager. but as a spectator perhaps?

My two penneths worth, the clubs previous directions have taken us backwards. Why not get behind this new direction.. it works in Europe with some of the biggest clubs in the world, why can't it work here?...

As long as we have a decent Boot Rom, youth set up and DOF in the background, I really don't see what the problem is. Its clear the owners are looking for a new direction, and I am sure they are looking for a decent return on their investment.. This ain't hicks n gillet. You only have to see the success of the red sox over the years and where they actually came from to get that, to get an idea our owners might actually mean business..

Have faith.. it will all turn out well in the end.. Rome wasn't built in a day..

Yes. I suppose our owners are a little bit like bewildered tourists looking for directions.

The comparison with Europe is misleading. Over there they appoint coaches rather than managers, with less power and less responsibility, to handle team affairs. Having a manager in the traditional English sense working under a DOF risks confusion and internal strife. It may be that FSG want to move the club towards the European model and appoint Martinez as coach rather than manager (and, like most of those who have expressed doubts about him, I'll get behind him if he's appointed) but there's no point trying to pretend it won't be a risky move in more than one respect.

the fact oncy is so into martinez makes me know for a fact he'll be fucking dreadful. it's an absolutely shite appointment and if it's followed by shite signings then i'm just gonna jib footy. not worth the effort.
