So FFF made a suggestion.

So we are now ready to welcome Luis Suarez back to the starting line up, and most likely see Carroll's chances limited again as they were before Suarez was suspended.

FFF made a post before Suarez ban commenced that he thought we would score more goals without Suarez in the team. Thats all, not that we would win more or lose more or be better or worse, just that we would score more.

So the last 9 games Suarez played in we scored - 9 Goals

and

The 9 games he has been out suspended for - 20 Goals.

Well played Sir Jon of Fox.

Gerrard playing has been a major factor.
Was just about to write that.

3-1 Newcastle
0-3 Manchester City
5-1 Oldham
1-0 Manchester City
0-0 Stoke City
1-3 Bolton
2-2 Manchester City
2-1 Man United
3-0 Wolves

Are these the games you were thinking of?

17 goals is what is what I'm getting.

Edit, but FFF was right.

Sell Suarez.

I think Carroll has at last shown in the last couple of games that he can play with Suarez behind.

I don't know so much. I don't think it was Suarez stopping Carroll getting a start, I think it was Carrolls lack of fitness and effort. Those things seem to be changing now so you could likely see both on a regular basis. All depends on many factors of course.

Fair play to FFF, but those statistics are meaningless. It is a bit like flipping a coin twice, and after seeing it come up heads both times conclude that the coin will come up heads 100% of the time.

i think he was just highlighting that suarez misses a lot of chances, which is fair tbh
Oh a slightly similar note, how many goals in the first handful of games in the season did we score when Suarez was off the field? Whilst I didn't keep up with the stat, I am certain it was none

Shit, holy fuck, just taken a while looking at stats. Need to check again, but before Suarez's ban, we only scored once (Kuyt v Brighton) when Suarez wasn't on the pitch?

Also the game against Oldham, and Kenny losing his temper at the team for playing shit has a lot to do with it as well
good one.
I just can't wait to Suarez and Gerrard playing together. If they click then we are going to look like a completely different team. Dirk and Carroll suddenly developing a first touch will also contribute significantly as well.

It wouldn't surprise me if Gerrard is out for month now that Luis is back. Dunno if there's a curse that inhibits them from playing together.

Was wondering about that myself.

BBC didn't seem to ask Kenny about it....

As long as we have a right back we should do better than last time.

An interesting prediction and one that JF probably saw as big Andy making up the shortfall, but big up foxy.
I have to say as has been pointed out it is not based on any science.
I would probably observe that since Suarez has been out we have shipped more goals than when he was playing.

The numbers in your original post serve as a conversation starter, nothing more. They carry zero weight.

Losing Lucas has led to us scoring more.
If Suarez is back in the team and our scoring "glut" continues and our results are decent then it's further evidence that Lucas should not be the automatic selection he was before his injury.

Suarez is obviously excellent and I've always maintained that Carroll will be a good player for us, Kenny needs to work out how to get the best from both. In theory a Suarez/Carroll forward line should work so the problem probably lies with the supply-line.

I don't think anyone should be an automatic selection at the moment. I think change in performances are not just about the influence of a single player but more so how we play as a team. Look at the game yesterday as a microcosm of this. We werent great first half at all. Second half we were much better without any change in personnel. Team performance is what counts mostly but I'd be lying if a bit of class of individual players can't influence that - such as a prolific finisher for example

If we play attacking options around Suarez then we're going to be considerably more dangerous. In a 4-2-3-1 formation with Carroll as the 1 we have a number of players including Suarez who can occupy one of the 3 AM positions (Suarez, Bellers, Gerrard, Kuyt, Downing, Maxi) and there are plenty of other formations which can allow Suarez to part of a dangerous unit, rather a lone ranger. If anything Suarez's enforced absence should have opened KK's eyes to the fact that overreliance on Luis wasn't helping anyone including the lad himself.

I don't think anyone should be an automatic selection at the moment except Suarez, Gerrard, Agger, Skrtel and Reina (Lucas if fit).
I think change in performances are not just about the influence of a single player but more so how we play as a team. Yes, holding on for dear life against City and getting dominated possession wise against Man U, at home might I add.
Look at the game yesterday as a microcosm of this. Yeah, we played against Wolves. We werent great first half at all. Second half we were much better without any change in personnel. Who was there to bring on? Downing? HA! Team performance is what counts mostly but I'd be lying if a bit of class of individual players can't influence that - such as a prolific finisher for examplethree top class players.
