How Liverpool missed out on their No. 1 set-piece coach target (Dated 2 Jan 2025)

Liverpool are yet to officially appoint a specialist set-piece coach after posting a job advert over the summer, and it transpires that they missed their No. 1 target.

Back in May, it emerged that Liverpool were seeking to follow the likes of Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea in appointing their own specialist set-piece coach.

A job advert was posted on the club’s official channels as well as LinkedIn, only for their search to be paused in September, with first-team development coach Aaron Briggs filling the role.

That comes after Liverpool failed to land their priority target in Feyenoord’s Etienne Reijnen
, who was at one point believed to be close to a move to Merseyside.

When Liverpool appeared set to land Reijnen, it was unclear exactly which role he would take up on Arne Slot‘s staff, but it would in fact have involved leading set-pieces.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad last month, the Liverpool head coach highlighted the role of his former colleague.

“Etienne Reijnen is still at Feyenoord and I recently read that Brian Priske (Slot’s successor) was full of praise for him,” Slot said.

“The set-pieces are a strength at Feyenoord and Reijnen still takes care of them.”

Feyenoord have scored the fourth-most set-piece goals so far in this season’s Eredivisie with eight, which would be joint-second in the Premier League and considerably more than Liverpool who have the second-fewest with two.

Reijnen’s proposed switch fell through due to work permit issues, with the 37-year-old instead remaining in his position as analyst and technical advisor for the Dutch club, but Liverpool could revive their interest in the future.

That would explain their decision to park any search for a specialist and rely on Briggs to fill the role for the time being.

Briggs’ duties within Slot’s staff are wide-ranging, including leading training sessions and bridging the first team and academy squads, and his time is understandably divided.

That makes it likely that Liverpool will eventually appoint a new set-piece coach and that could come if Reijnen is eventually eligible for a UK work permit.

The club faced so no such issue in acquiring a work permit for Slot and support staff such as Sipke Hulshoff, Ruben Peeters and Roderick van der Ham, who all moved to Anfield from Feyenoord.

Brian Priske on coach Etiënne Rijnen: the ‘Future of Dutch football’ (Dated 26 Nov 2024)

Feyenoord boss Brian Priske has been beaming with positivity surrounding the work of one of his assistants, Etiënne Reijnen. The 37-year-old former defender was an Eredivisie stalwart and is currently responsible for the set pieces at Feyenoord. Impressed with the application he has seen so far, the Danish manager predicts a storied future ahead.

Priske himself has been able to draw parallels already. He started his career as a trainer of set pieces at FC Midtjylland. He grew to assistant trainer and later head trainer.

At Feyenoord, he leaves the set pieces to Reijnen, who was appointed a year ago as an analyst and advisor within the Rotterdammers’ technical staff. Speaking about Reijnen, who played for PEC Zwolle, AZ, Cambuur and FC Groningen, Priske gushed:

“I don’t have to worry about the standard situations, because Etiënne does that great. I’m very happy with him. He’s young, but understands football and is very clear about what he wants. Reijnen is one of those trainers for the future of football in the Netherlands.”

Set pieces have been key for Feyenoord this season. Of all the clubs in the Eredivisie, Feyenoord have had the most shots from set pieces (with 71).

Defensively, only Ajax and PSV have had to deal with fewer shots from set pieces by their opponents. FC Utrecht is the only team that has conceded fewer goals from set pieces, namely zero. Feyenoord have conceded just one goal.
I am sure he has enough points to get in, is the club that incompetent... The Uber Delivery drivers are getting visas

I think broadly equating Klopp with “chaos” and Slot with “control” is grossly oversimplifying matters. Klopp’s 103/105 point team controlled and dominated the opposition more than almost any other team I’ve ever seen. Don’t think Klopp’s style of football was inherently flawed or outdated, but it’s true that his own decision-making in the last couple of seasons has become more ideological and less sharp and evidence-driven as perhaps the exhaustion of a unwinnable race against Cheaters FC and probably some things behind the scenes in the club started taking their toll on his energy and willingness to put up with things.

Slot didn’t reinvent football; he just curbed some of the excesses of Klopp’s later years in favour of a more common sense approach - playing more players in their natural positions, being more ruthless with underperforming players, dialing back the intensity and focusing on key small details, while retaining the overall structure Klopp created. He deserves huge credit for being exceptionally clear-eyed to make the exact right tweaks rather than make changes for changes’ sake (for contrast look across the next town at Amorim), but I think it’s too early to say he has created a style that surpassed both Klopp and Guardiola.

Megamind does need to work out how to make the defence stronger. Not sure how he does that but playing like Chelsea under maureen might be an option. However, with Trent and Robbo at the back not sure how he does that

The moment we start playing like Chelsea under Mourinho we lose the high press and become a counter attacking team from deep. Not good.
Plus, we haven’t been conceding too many from counter attacks but rather from situations when most of our players are back defending. Which means our defending and concentration is not good enough in those situations rather than our general tactics.
If we end up losing Trent and then Robbo to the bench, two very defensively good fullbacks should really help us in this regard.

Agreed.

We know Trent's pros and cons and nothing is going to change there, there is no coaching that is going to convert him into a solid defensive FB at this stage of his career/age. You either accept what he is or move on.
Robbo however again made multiple errors from skewing mis-kicks back into the defensive area, to missed tackles, fouls and just being AWOL. I don't know what's going on because not all of that can be down to age, though it's what we saw with Fabs.

We have a superb CBs and a wonderful CM in front of them. The FBs are definitely a concern now (though defensively I obviously prefer Bradley to Trent).

I think we make the defense stronger by holding on to the ball and Playing fucking football!
I looked into dispossession stats, Salah is our worse player stats wise. maybe @King Binny can find more meaningful stats on who gives away the ball in dangerous areas the most... For some reason I think it will be Trent as opposition overload the rightside

Meet the new manager. Same as the old manager.

Once again loads of us are screaming for certain changes. Then he doesn’t make them. Everyone guesses that players (Endo) don’t suit his philosophy. Well that’s Amorim level stupidity. Do what it takes to fucking win football matches.

Gravenberch and Virgil look shot. There’s not much we can do about Virgil despite Quansah’s recent cameos. Running Gravy into the ground isn’t on. Endo rarely lets us down and doesn’t get dominated.

Chiesa may as well fuck off to Italy on holiday. The Alps will be lovely this time of year. He’s not getting a game. Even when Gakpo is out, Jota not ready for 90 and Nunez still gets minutes.

I’m not seeing any of these tactical tweaks or more control this last month. It’s still utter fucking chaos.

Amorim, 1 point per game.
Slot, 2.35 points per game.

Never, ever, make any sort of comparison between those two.

Yeah, but any of us could do better than Slot.

I mean, it's soo obvious and easy.

These fucking head coaches come in with their silly badges and "experience" and prior success and just overcomplicate this simple game.

Yeah, I know. I set up the team to win from the couch last night. It was dead easy.

I hope Slot now learns that we need a big squad in the Prem.
The decision to not bring back Bajcetic was stupid. McConnell is not better than him.
Also Bajcetic could have played at RB.
The main issue with Slot is that he doesn't trust his squad players and he's making it very clear. Confidence cannot be high among those players.

But not everyone rates Bajetic as highly as you. I certainly don't, and am fine with him not being part of the current squad.

Slot needs to trust the squad he has more.

Elliot and Endo should have had far more minutes than they’ve been given for example.
Exactly. We don't need a big squad, we just need to use the ones we have. There's zero excuse for gravy starting every game when we've got endo and mcconnell.

Yeah I don't understand how Endo gets so few minutes. He's done incredibly well pretty much every time he comes on. He's obviously not as good in possession, but if we're in a midfield battle, he won't disappoint.

The lack of rotation is a legit source of frustration, especially the Grav/Endo situation. It's the same bullshit that saw us implode after the League Cup win. I had hope articles praising Slots ability to keep players fresh and fit held some water, but we look physically and mentally dented for the final run in of important fixtures. Other teams will be suffering, too, but it's such a leveller that games will swing either way and it's hard to be confident of any consistency.

We all think Endo should play the double pivot with Grav. Trent needs to realise he is a defender. Robbo looks distracted, by what I am not sure. Chiesa in the last 20 minutes of a game will give us much needed pace and ideas.
We need to also speak about Jota, who has lost his boots
