Skrtel

Skrtel has had some excellent seasons for Liverpool. He's been our best CB on several occasions and as recently as 2011/12 was our player of the season and subject to a proposed bid of £20m from Man City. At that point he was easily one of the best CBs in the Premiership.

He's never been faultless, no. But he's performed at a very high level, for a long time, and deserves more respect.

I don't understand why this has been forgotten by so many. Yeah, he was atrocious on Sunday. Yeah, he is past his best. But to loudly crow about how terrible he is, and always has been, is fucking retarded.

We should have taken the £20 million.

What has he done for us lately ?

I'm not trying to argue that he shouldn't be replaced this summer. I was addressing the posters who have been loudly quacking on about how shit he is, and always has been, and blah blah blah, which seems rather unfair given he has been a good defender on many occasions. Comments like this:

"has been shit for years, what does that say about him? He's pathetic"

"Truth is, Skittles has never really been that good"

"He has been our worst central defender for years. Headless chicken and very weak. Skrtel is our Titus Bramble"

Fine, that last comment is from the incurably stupid weirdo Arn, but even so, there are some short memories here.

He's been a loyal servant to Liverpool for years now. Yeah, he's not a world class CB. He still makes a lot of mistakes. But he has still earned a lot of respect.

With that out of the way, in no uncertain terms, he cost us 3 points yesterday. Yes, there were other culprits, but none as guilty as Skrtel. I also agree Klopp has to share some of the blame. Lovren and Sakho have looked really well paired together, and I thought they were doing ok yesterday. Ok, so Lovren was on a yellow card, but surely a "calm down" chat at half time was all that was needed with Lovren? Bringing Skrtel in fresh back from a long term injury in such an important game pretty much handed Southampton the 3 points.

Yeah, i was just pointing out the present attitude.

So and so had a bad game, the sky is falling down. Replace everyone!

Rather than look at the fact that all our defenders were poor, their might be a tactical reason for same. An adjustment is needed.

But when you point that out, some fucking dope will make a stupid comment back

I don't know about tactical. I still stick to my original and oft-repeated assertion that we just don't have enough good players capable of playing at a consistently high enough level, regardless of what the tactics are.

Certainly Klopp made errors in his starting XI on Sunday, and compounded those errors with his subs and lack of tactical changes in the second half, but he's working with a squad that he didn't build. I am under no illusions that he can weave magic and make us Champions next season, because he simply does not have the players to do so, and while I expect FSG to give him a decent sized budget in summer - maybe £100m - I'm not sure that will be enough, because he needs a new GK, new CB (at least), new CM/ DM, new AM/ winger and a new striker.

We haven't learned much so far, but what is clear - and always has been - is that you can't have players like Mignolet, Allen, Origi, Sakho, Lovren, Skrtel and Lucas as first team players and expect to win games often enough to win trophies.

And the likes of Lallana, Moreno, Benteke, Sturridge, Can, Milner and Henderson need far more genuine competition for their places, because at the moment there isn't any.

After the euphoria of the Unitd game everyone was spunking all over the place about how the Sakho and Lovren partnership was a solid building block for the future, and we didn't need any defensive reinforcements. I mean, really. Come on.

You didn't see me do that.

No, and I fear that Sakho/ Lovren as a partnership is never ever going to truly convince me either. Sakho gives me the heebie-jeebies almost all the time.

I miss the days of Carragher, Hyypia, Hamann and Henchoz. There was just a more calm, obdurate quality to the team then. Clean sheets were more commonplace and didn't feel as hard won. Even in the draw against United, in which Sakho was great, it was frenzied, desperate stuff at times.

We just have no composure, and I do point the blame at Sakho, Lovren. Moreno and Mignolet for that, because even when playing well, all of them seem one pass or slip or shit header or bad clearance away from disaster. It's no way to build a team.

And we need a proper DM, too. I may have mentioned that about 5 million times in the last 5 years too

Titus Bramble was very good when he didn't try to act as the defensive leader. It is the same with Skrtel. The problem is and it is a fucking big one is that he isn't a team player. When he played very good a few seasons ago then we had Carra in the team and before that Hyypia. That meant that Skrtel couldn't do it his way. He had to do what Carra or Hyypia told him. Now he is a headless chicken because it is all about him. Agger and Skrtel moaned at each other a few times, well more than a few times, because Skrtel will never admit that he was the responsible one.

It is a partnership and Skrtel is a shit defender if he don't have a Carra or Hyypia telling him to be a team player. He isn't the brighest player around.

Bramble being compared to Skrtel. And Bramble described as being 'very good'.
You need to head back down to your hole with Glock. If you're Glock, then the message remains the same.

I've been a Skrtel defender for years but when the defence has looked solid for several weeks straight and then one variable changes (bringing Skrtel in) and it instantly (not hyperbole) goes to hell in a hand basket, it's hard to stick up for Skittles.

I bet he can spell brightest though.

I've been told repeatedly I've been too negative this season simply because I haven't got carried away every time we win a couple of games or beat a supposed good side.

The prem is the worst its been ever, we won't make top four and haven't been able to string four league wins together all year.

We need major player changes in the summer.

Dear me. Comparing Skrtel to Titus bramble? How come you'll allow yourself moan about Skrtel? Is it related to your weird Agger obsession? Please don't write back a load of nonsense either please Arn, I just wanted you to know that comparing Martin Skrtel to Titus Bramble is a little bit mad.

Can Arn please get banned again? He takes things to a whole new level of Modo.

I don't agree with that. Modo's behaving himself now, but when he was banned his sheer repetitiousness had gone way beyond Arn's and he was dragging his pet preoccupations into totally unrelated threads, which is one thing Arn - for all the weirdness of some of his views - hasn't done.

Yeah, modo was just ruining threads left right and centre

Arn is just a harmless cretin

Thank you 🙂

I only post my views of things and I don't care if they are popular or not. I don't insult other members even if they want me to do it so I would get banned. I put them on ignore instead.

How come Skrtel isn't feeling the love Arn? I thought we shouldn't moan about our players and support them?

I've always thought he was, at best, average and never anywhere near the standard of CB that Liverpool football club should have as a first choice. Yes, he's had some decent runs of form, but that's not saying much over eight years. He's rash, a poor passer and reader of the game, he spends more time looking at his man when a cross comes over than the ball and he doesn't communicate. All INHO of course.
My comment that you so kindly highlighted above is based on these feelings. Not on a short memory, or after another horror show performance (I think Klopp is equally at fault for chucking him in after such a long lay off). I was merely adding my long-held opinion to the conversation as it seemed salient to do so as that was what was being discussed. All the 'we nearly won the league with him at CB' talk is indicative of how far we have let our standards drop. We didn't win it. With a better CB we might have done.

We kept a pretty good goals against record when he played alongside Sami, he was also he biggest scoring defender we had in that season we nearly won the league. You can't point at him without acknowledging that he's played with some absolute fucking dross since Sami left - Johnson, The Greek, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno, etc.

"A poor passer", what a biased post. So now it's his fault we didn't win the league, and not the pretty fucking obvious culmination of a number of factors? Like the manager you couldn't stop giving shit to throughout his tenure?

Yep I agree with this. Skrtel is a good centre half when partnered with a top class defender like Sami (or Carra) but isn't such a good one when not. Who knows? Maybe Lovren and Sahko will be too when playing alongside a top class centre half.

Skrtel did have a good season in the year we last challenged but it was more so for the number of goals (some crucial) he scored rather than his work in defense. The general feeling was that we would have won it if it wasn't for how we defended and Skrtel can't escape the blame for that. Nor can Sahko and the other defenders that played alongside them. They were all liable for the number of stupidly soft goals we conceded that season.

If Skrtel deserves praise for being in that title challenging team though, then so does Sahko and the other defenders.

IMO the main reason to why we didn't won the league that year with Rodgers was down to that he dropped Agger. Skrtel and Agger hadn't lost a single game that season and then Rodgers suddenly decided to drop him. They had won almost all the league games they started together. Won 14, drew 1, lost 0 or something like that.

Our organisation from the back fell apart after Agger was dropped.

I find it very strange that everyone of our defenders play much better when Skrtel isn't playing and much worse when he is. Even Mignolet play much better without Skrtel in the team. Some say that Flanagan had a very bad game but he had no problem at all in the first half and so did all our defenders.

Skrtel can't organise a defense but he won't accept than someone else do it. He is to stubborn to take orders from a "nobody" like Sakho or Lovren. Agger didn't took any shit from him. Skrtel had to do it the Agger way. A lot of arguing on the pitch between them but he had to accept Agger as the defensive leader.

If we play a compact team that play deep then Skrtel would probably be a good player for us but we don't play that way with Klopp as manager. He also would have to accept that he isn't first choice. He would have to accept that he isn't the defensive leader.

Agger, the biggest fucking myth in the history of Liverpool Football Club. We went on our fantastic mammoth run at the tail end of that season, the run that got us in the thick of it and in touching distance of the title, without Daniel Agger.

Skrtel had to do it the Agger way, alot of arguing between them on the pitch. Where do you find the time to make this shit up?
