Skrtel

That Ming kick and Skrtel missing a header and then a tackle sums up that defence.
We need a new GK, CB and LB this summer.

Martin has been at times outstanding and often very good for us and doesn't deserve the instant hate he is getting after today's very poor performance which comes after being out for four months.
There is definitely a case to be made for him to be moved on.
To be fair there is probably a case to be made to move on all of our centre halves.
Flanno didn't do either of the centre halves any favours today either
Yeah its weird. I don't remember many celebrating when he was ruled out for a period of time. I recall him being our most reliable defender. He was very poor when he came on today though.

Seriously ? I'm struggling to remember anything Flanno did wrong .. other than lose possession that led to a goal ... but that was from a hospital pass from Can.
Apart from hugely contributing to their goal he was caught out of position a hell of a lot in the second half.
His passing was off on a few occasions as well.
I like Flanno but though he was poor today

He's always dropped deep though but have been saving himself with these last ditch tackles.
We looked to have moved the team a bit higher under Klopp with Lovren/Sakho.
That just created havoc today with Skrtel dropping off.

There have been loads of times this season and last when you could see Lovren screaming at Skrtel to push up.

He shouldn't have been playing. Why did he come on in the middle of a game?

This wasn't a dead rubber match for players to get a bit of match fitness.

Oh fr god's sake, he came on because Lovren was going to be sent off. He didn't come on to get a bit of a run out.

Squaka : Skrtel's game by numbers :
3 goals conceded
1 penalty given away
0 tackles won
0 blocks
0 interceptions

Funny that for all the dropping deep that Skrtel does his average position was higher than both Skrtel and Sakho's.

Anyone with a bit of cop on can see while these defenders aren't great they are fine in certain situations.

For all of them to be shite at the same time is one of two things - a system problem or fatigue.

Actually I didn't think dropping deep was his problem yesterday. If you watch how all the goals were created Skrtel was out of line for two that I can remember - he was well advanced of the rest of the backline, fails to win the ball, or force it backwards as they go around him, and he was then left 8-10m from his proper position and there's a gaping hole where he should have been that is exploited.
Maybe he simply has a problem of timing when it comes to playing Klopp's higher line, regardless he should be aware of what the rest of the backline were doing and not go walkabout on solo defensive missions.

No the reason was our our CM getting owned.

It was formation and tactics second half that killed us now Skrtel.
It was a combination of two good Southampton substitutions, one poor LFC sub and visible fatigue that wasn't addressed. Defensive frailty was caused by Skrtel's introduction (despite Lovren's lambasting by some Southampton had been reduced to nothing but an occasional half chance in the first half), Mane taking advantage of the new pockets of space Skrtel gifted him and Wanyama owning our midfield because of our defence sitting deeper (except for Skrtel who seemed to go walkabout into midfield at will). The players that were wilting the most were not replaced (the Lovren substitution compounded this).

Truth is, Skittles has never really been that good. Looks decent enough alongside a world class CB, but never in that class himself. Put it this way, if he had said 'come and get me' to top clubs last summer, name one that would have been desperate to sign him. Exactly.

Skrtel has been our most reliable defender for the past few years. One really bad game and he's shit? Always has been too?
Wow.

He's been the most reliable defender in a shite defence. We've conceded 50 odd goals for the last two seasons. He's stood out as the least shite defender.
Now we're addressing the defensive side and he isnt good enough going forward.

He's been good enough for us to sustain two title challenges with him as an ever present. He's also been good enough for our last five managers to pick him regularly. I thought he'd lost a bit of pace and agility looking at him earlier in the season, but that happens. The revisionism on here since yesterday has been ridiculous, a complete re-evaluation of his career based on one game. And then you've got Zlatan and Mors labelling him pathetic and a "bellend". Sensationalism at its worst.

You need to have a quick look at the other defenders too in that case.
Klopp already knows that our defence is a shambles and that's why he's bringing in Matip.

I've touched on this subject before and I still stand by what I said, we need a complete overhaul.
Skrtel is not our biggest problem at the back despite his horrendous performance yesterday.

But surely its also allowed to say that the time has come for him to move on?
He's been a great servant to the club and was a great part of the team that came close to winning the league two seasons ago.
But he'll be 32 this year and what happened in for the past 10 years cant judge whether or not he should be in the squad next season.

He's lost a bit of pace, struggles to hold the line and his general play seem to have declined.
We were notably poorer at passing the ball out from the back yesterday aswell when he came on.

I think his biggest problem - and someone mentioned it - is he likes to retreat when he defends ... I dunno if that is something that works in Klopp's system, but you could tell yesterday how he was behind the line a few times. I think Ryan mentioned it when analyzing Lovren last year.

Yeah, we need a new spine. I doubt Ming will be nr 1 next season, we're getting Matip and I'm sure Klopp will be after a new LB.
But I still dont think Skrtel should be part of the team going forward. See the post above.

It was sad to see Lovren, after working so hard to make an improbable comeback, spoil it by losing his composure and letting the crowd get to him yesterday. He had to come off before he was sent off. Why Toure didn't come on I don't know, but anyone who saw Skrtel in the under 21s game at West Ham would have been worried when he emerged on the pitch, because he'd been wildly undisciplined in that previous game, with all of his worst habits (blatant holding, shirt-tugging, rash tackles and dubious positioning) rushing back like demons released from some medieval vault. But it was a collective failure yesterday. In the first half, the teamwork was superb and we looked really very good, and then most players seemed to lose their minds in the second half. If anything, the midfield became so porous I doubt any pair of CBs would have looked that sound as the attacks kept coming.

The only thing I could think about by choosing Skrtel over Toure was that he would be a better match against the long balls towards Pelle.
That didn't work out at all though.

Time to send Lovren to the psychologist. His football ability but mentally he was shot yesterday.

We should be keeping the ball away from our defenders. They should be reduced to defending corners and free kicks.

Allowing a team to run straight through the midfield is always going to unnerve a defence.
