People say 18 year old as if it's a negative. Surely it's a major positive. The guy might well have 15 good seasons ahead of him.

£2m a season. As SL says, chances are it'll look good value in a few years - although I do think there are similar options out there that probably offer better value.

If everything goes as planned it'll look like a good deal after a few years. There are just so many things that can go wrong with a transfer like this. He has looked very good but £30m for an 18yo full back? There's at least 50% extra just for being English. Southampton are also in excellent position to negotiate so It's probably not as incentive based as it should be.

That said, I guess the worst case scenario for them is a slight dent in dividents for stock owners so why not.

Him and Barkley are going to be future stars.

If they had a fancy name and playing Spain/Germany, they naysayers would be jizzing over them.

I can only see one thing potentially going wrong, and that's him just failing to settle at a much bigger club and looking overawed. But that looks unlikely given how comfortable he looked on his England debut. We already know he has the ability. He's performed well and will improve with age. Catastrophic injury is covered by insurance.

There's also the scarcely mentioned matter of inflation to consider. Prices have risen steeply for the last 20 years, and the growth in popularity of the game shows little sign of slowing down. Therefore it seems reasonable to me to pay still more over the odds for a player with a great deal of longevity to offer, because the money you're paying out for him to be playing 10 years hence in terms of this transfer fee would buy you much much less if you were spending it 10 years from now. The last thing you want to be doing in a high inflation environment is sitting on cash, as Arsenal apparently have. You're much better to blow a few million on an overpriced youngster like Shaw.

If I was the Man United board I'd be leaking all sorts of shit to make us look better right now.

Shaw they can have, he looks good on the ball but is poor defensively.

I'd see the wages as more of a problem than the transfer fee. Transfers in general are a bit ridiculous now, and are so detached I'm not sure that players necessarily feel the pressure if they're being bought for stupid money. But the wages would concern me; 100k for an 18 year old who has not achieved anything in the game and has how many seasons of top flight football? That isn't to deny his obvious talent but it's rewarding him a huge amount for just joining a club. Will Januazjay want an increase on his 60k contract as a result? Will any other young player coming in want stupid money? They're painting themselves into a corner and playing a dangerous game re: motivation for a very young footballer.

He's alive! He's alive!

You best have your plans sorted for the 11th May!

There are more things that can go wrong, like him not being quite as good as he's looked for Southampton.

And although I mostly agree with you it's quite normal for people to frown on the price. He would be the 3rd most expensive(or something) defender of all time and it's slightly mental.

£100k a week, and a 5 yr contract means even with a transfer fee of £30m it makes the whole outlay at £55m. For a left back! Unproven at the highest level that's just mental! I was a bit alarmed at us giving Sterling £30k a week when he signed his new deal last year, I'm more relaxed now. Let Utd blow the money on Shaw, Flano's doing a great job at the moment and playing in the champions league against better opposition will only improve him.

It's possible to get a feel for Utd's signings now as the more obvious targets start to take shape.

Shaw £30m
Lallana £25m
Cavani £60m
Carvalho £35m

That's £150m. Guess they'll sign at least one centre half and a winger as well.

Crazy figures.

Fellaini for £27.5million
Mata for £37m @ £140k/wk
Rooney's £300k/wk

Cavani's PSG contract is worth €200k/wk

If we buy him he's ace (until he becomes a scapegoat, then he is shit). If he goes anywhere else he is wank and will always be wank.

Out of all of them only lallana would be worth the money, I'd love him at liverpool. cavani is not worth that fee at all.

Shaw and Southampton are in a very good position to negotiate given his age, nationality and position, so I'm not surprised to see big figures being mentioned.

Yeah im not surprised either. But I'd be gutted if we spent that money on him. Well overpriced. Lallana is worth 25m though.
