Shaqiri

He's quality, I don't care about the politics, he's genuinely class and criminally underused.

Exactly. I adore Klopp, but every manager seems to develop some irrational prejudice against one player they signed, and in Klopp's case it is, or was, Shaq. I was exasperated last season, especially post-lockdown, when he was overlooked in games when we were really fatigued and lacking fresh ideas. I get that he isn't a regular starter, but he ought to always, at least, be on the bench. None of the theories as to why he was overlooked made any sense: he DID work hard, he did track back, he did press, he did defend, and he did offer something positive. I'm really relieved we didn't let him go. He gives us another option and this season, especially, we need that.

If he plays, he'll get valuable goals too. We have a wealth of attacking options now.

Firmino looks toothless and bereft of confidence. Klopp keeping picking him isn't doing him or the team any favours. Hope we try something different.

Why not Shaq in the 9 role? He has all the attributes and a better eye for goal.

Ive been advocating dropping Firmino for months now but I dont see Shaq in that 9 role, he doesnt have the work rate for that position

I knew Shaq had it in him. What a terrific substitution by Klopp. Two players adept in playing in small spaces, really turned it up a gear.
Exactly the two subs on/off I was hoping for.

Not sure what happened to Jones he simply wasn’t in the game bar safe passes here and there.

Jones needs to step up and be more brave. He's not even trying to be the player he was when surrounded by fringe players.

He's in the team for the defence splitting pass when hendo and gini are the other in the centre.

I hadn't realised Shaq deliberately put it through his legs for that pass. Genius...

I'm happy with Jones so far. It will take a while, he is full of talent and he isn't sure yet what tricks to use.

I think the "problem" with us, is that our midfield is drilled to not do the risky pass, something which is in direct opposition to 2/3 years ago.

Jones clearly has the tools to thread fantastic passes, but possibly in an overeagerness to impress, he's following directions to the letter. This is in no way a criticism of Jones. He's following the game plan.

I feel shaq doesn't give a fuck and will try to find the attacker, which is exactly what we need sometimes.

Every chance or half chance we're creating is from Salah/mane running at defenders. If it's not a counter attack then more often than not they're blocked off and the chance goes begging.

Ox has scored big goals and had big games when he’s been fit and hasn’t hidden. Keita is just a shithouse.

Keita’s scored a few important goals too, champion league quarter final’s one comes immediately to mind. It wasn’t long ago that after the first 3 games, he was considered one of the most important players. His injury record is his biggest issue, a bit unfortunate.

He’s never been considered one of the most important players at Liverpool. Ox has scored two crackers against City in huge games. Keita has obvious talent but is a shithouse and needs selling.

fans really have poor memories and are just fickle. Kieta is a decent player who no through a fault of his own is injury prone. I want him sold and the get someone more reliable but he isn't shit a player

Keita has scored 2nd against Porto, equalizer against Southampton in a huge moment when one down. I’m not gonna compare one crock for another crock in terms of injury but he has a lot more to his game than Ox in terms of what can offer. It must be crap for a player to be repeatedly injured for long periods, must be hard for then mentally to each time. Right now both are injured, again...

Shaqiri has looked dangerous whenever he has played this season. Whether that is enough to earn him a starting place I don't know, but it has to count for something.

Both he and Jota are making very strong claims for a place in the team and it's good to see.

I agree, aside from Thiago and Shaqiri, we don't have many who do that naturally, even Henderson has to be sort of forced into the situation for it to happen, he and the others keep possession over risking forcing an opening, though Henderson can carve out a great pass or a top quality cross. Sometimes you need that element of risk though, it's being intelligent enough to pick your moments well and not gift the opposition the chance to break, which is something we clearly do struggle to defend against.

I remember against the mancs in his first season, when we were running out of ideas and being way too cautious, Klopp sent him on and told him to have some shots on goal - which led to two goals. That's the kind of thing we need him for - he's got the technique to hit some real zingers from outside the area, as well as play the telling through ball, and, like against Everton, sometimes even get on the end of a pass in the area. The space he tends to like to occupy on the right can get squeezed a bit by Trent and Salah, but most of the time they seem able to work it out. As a sub I think he's a great option to have.

[article]Graeme Souness has hailed Xherdan Shaqiri as a “door opener” for Liverpool following his stunning assist for their winning goal in a 2-1 victory over West Ham.

Liverpool had struggled to impose themselves on the game and find the winner before the double introduction of Diogo Jota and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Jota thought he had struck immediately, only for VAR to intervene, but he still made the difference as he settled the contest from a lovely Shaqiri pass.

“I want to mention Shaqiri,” Souness said. “He’s a door opener. He sees a pass and can deliver on it.

“I actually think he’s that cute that when the ball ends up with him, he’s actually gone for the nutmegs.

“For me, it’s the weight on the pass as well. It’s not hard enough so that it’s going to run through to the goalkeeper, it’s just hard enough to tempt the goalkeeper and perfect for Jota to put it away.

“I want to involve Shaqiri in this because that is a great bit of technique there.”[/article]

He was my first choice for a sub last night simply because he has that kind of pass in his locker. When Firmino isn't on his game (and he hasn't been for a while) we really miss that kind of penetration in the middle. TAA and Robbo are great but it's nice to have options and not always be forced out wide.

Like Macca, I don't understand why he's been so underused - unless it's all down to injuries and nothing else. He seems a very useful squad player / sub to have.

Keita won’t play often because he’s even more injured.
But when all are fit he has Alcântara,Keita,Henderson,Gini,Jota and Jones ahead of him All of them has a bearing on if he is even in the started let alone plays. Minamino too, as klopp tried to use him to replace firmino

Just can't see he getting real game time unless it is in the cups

I remember the fuss about Liverpool not wanting to sign Nabil Fekir because the medical staff were worried about the op he had on his Cruciate Ligament Rupture
he had back in 2015/16...
Since then he has missed, due to injury

That's 28 matches, 15 more games than Fekir, 159 days out vs Fekir 77... Note Fekir record injuries are since the main injury, and if you look at it since 2018/19 Fekir has only been injured for 19 days and missed 3 games

Just gots to show how good our medical staff are 🙄

Fekir Compere to the Ox

AOC 66 matches missed and counting,51 more than Fekir and counting 442 days out and counting vs Fekir's 77....

Point being had we bought Fekir we could have saved part, if not all the money spent on Keita
has you pointed out and imo, rightly so "Kieta is a decent player who no through a fault of his own is injury prone."

@Donavan Ried
You win some you lose some. Sometimes you get it right and sometimes you don't.
Ox could have been a good signing and I still believe Keita can be. We still won the league so all is good.
