I've still got high hopes for Babel an I for one hope he gets another Season to prove his worth. He's still young but now is the time for him to shine.

BABELTIME!
I won't be bothered if he stays, for exactly the reasons I've stated, if he (or Rafa) gets his head right he *could* be awesome, but I can understand the questions over his future.

It's a strange situation, almost Collymore/Heskey-esque.. You just know there's a great player in there, but you know there's something that's blocking his way.

Noone should be able to show the sublime skill he showed on the touchline against United and to be able to crack a shot like he can, but then watch a 30 yard lofted ball played with precision to drop at his right foot, only for it to bounce clumsily off his shin to a player a few yards away.

Baffling stuff.

An inherent lack of confidence can do that. It looks as if mentally he's not tough enough. It's hard playing for a club like Liverpool where you need more than talent. You need that winning mentality, determination and willingness to improve. Lucas has it. He has it in spades. Babel hasn't and unless he develops in this area, he'll never fulfill his potential. He's young though so he has time. If anyone ever needed a sports psychologist, its Ryan Babel.

Well, everyone sees this shit attitude of his, but not me. I don't doubt that he can be a bit casual at times, but the way some peope go on, you half imagine him running onto the pitch and basically sitting down on the left flank without moving till the final whistle goes. Maybe it's something you pick up at the match more, I don't know. From TV, I just don't get the bad attitude claims - it seems like ever since Rafa made some tiny remark in the press, it's snowballed.

That aside, he had an up and down first season, which you can sort of accept when a young player is new to the Prem.

This season he's been overlooked, passed over and has never gotten a run in the side. This was the case from Day 1 in the season, so it's got nothing to do with his attitude or performances. Rafa decided in the summer that he didn't fancy him and we all know that once that happens, the player is finished... particularly one like Babel that needs a manager that will really get behind him.

If you basically decided to write him off based on what you saw last season, which I know you pretty much did, then fair enough, you don't rate him as a player. What I don't accept is the whole "he's had chances to prove himself". No, no he hasn't. Not this season.
I have read all your posts in this thread and this is the first one you have explained your point fully. I will agree to disagree about seeing or not seeing any attitude, with one caviate his attitude is the problem, the lad has raw talent and has not shown enough that he is capable to of achieving. I have to also agree to disagree that he has had chances to prove himself, maybe not this season but he had plenty last season, even though it may be his first, he did not show enough that he will cope with the prem and push on to harness his talent and deliver. As far as not getting a chance this season, his way of proving himself should be the same way Bennayoun forced himself in, he took his chances when coming off the bench and doing what he's there for scoring goals.

The Yossi comparison is a fair one actually, he's gradually worked his way in through making a difference fairly consistently when he's come on, to the point of making a difference when he's started games too. It hasn't always been a bed of roses for him either, he's been through shit form, not getting played and getting 5 minutes here and there but he's gotten to the point where he's responded well consistently enough to be demanded to be picked.

Fair play, and that's THE difference.

Yossi is a 27/8 year old who's been around the block.

Babel is a 21yeard old, who's just starting out.

Hardly a fair comparison.

After what's been said about him having a "fair crack".. I could imagine these are the same people who would be all for selling Ronaldo(were he playing for us) and had he had a similar 1st season to Ryan.

Because in my eyes, he did well in his 1st season. But like Wenger said, when you purchase a player like Riera (Wenger was referring to Alonso) you "kill" the talented young players you do have.. or least their confidence.

The game has changed.

The days of picking up bargains like Nicol or Hansen, or plucking talent from Home Farm and then allowing said players to learn 'the Liverpool Way' in the stiffs for a year or two are *over*

Sad but true.

I've not heard one serious defence, yet, of the reserves system. I mean, it isn't normal practice among premiership teams. The flimsy argument that it's somehow humiliating to play in the reserves, rather than sit like a twat on the bench, really beggars belief. Isn't anyone remotely bothered about what a waste of time the reserves is?

You seem to be arguing with yourself here. No-one has tried to mount a defence for the reserves system because as you say, it is flawed and everyone can see that.

The reserve system is new. Give it a little time to bear fruit, before you start slagging it off.

I agree entirely. The biggest problem is surely the small number of games they play. If the reserves played 38 games a season in the league, there'd be more scope for using it as a way for established squad players to maintain their match fitness and play their way into the team - but as it is, there aren't even enough matches for the youngsters to show any development.

The probable best solution is Rafa's idea of following the Spanish league and allowing the big clubs to field B teams in the lower divisions. Not sure if it'll happen here though.

Sell him. He does my fucking tits in, the half-arsed fucker.
Yes, he's horribly frustrating to watch. Always look like his thoughts are everywhere else but on the game itself.

On a side note, Rafa wants to keep Leto. Although if he can't get a work permit, he'll be off aswell. The story is from Liverpool.no
Is he the answer then?

I hope not cos lets face it, most left wingers, inc babel > Leto.

Sell him, use the money to sign Schweinsteiger.

Dear Glock,

Bastian just signed a 4 year contract extension. He's a Bayern lad through and through. He's not leaving. Find another player to fantasize about.

Thanks,
SCM

Was thinking of saying the same thing, but then again...why bother?

It's not like he hasn't been told that a dozen times already.

Dear LTW,

Glock has issues. It's pointless pointing out to him that Bastian has tied himself to a new deal, nor that it's unlikely that Eto'o will come to Anfield this summer.

It's central to his internet persona to be an irritating, repetitive fantasist. There's really no point in arguing with him.

Best wishes,

Buddha

Memo to all:

SCHWEINSTEIGER CAN SIGN HUNDRED YEARS OF CONTRACT WITH BAYERN MUNICH FOR ALL I CARE BUT IF WE SHOW INTEREST IN HIM AND PAY WHATEVER AMOUNT HIS VALUE IS THERE IS A CHANCE WE CAN GET HIM.

IF YOU KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT FOOTBALL AND THINK BEFORE YOU POST, YOU ARE NO LONGER AN IDIOT.

Memo ends.

Agent says Babel won't leave Liverpool

Ryan Babel will not leave Liverpool this summer, according to his agent.

The Dutch winger found first-team chances limited throughout the season and has been tipped to leave Anfield.

But his representative, Winnie Haatrecht, insists that is not the case and he hopes to hold talks soon with Reds manager Rafael Benitez.

"He is not done here yet," Haatrecht told AD Sportwereld.

"I will sit down soon with Mr Benitez to evaluate the season. We haven't found time to do that yet.

"Ryan went from Ajax to Liverpool to win trophies. So far that hasn't happened. Ryan wants to leave Liverpool as a regular starter with a trophy in his pocket."

The 22-year-old made six starts all season and was a substitute 21 times.

As he lacks a big set of balls Babel's talior went the extra mile and used the crotch material to make Ryan some extra big pockets to carry his trophy around in.
