I agree the club should have handled things differently, but not in the way you indicate. Not only had Bellamy been warned about his future conduct when he signed, he then set about a teammate with a golf club. You can't turn a blind eye in such circs IMHO. What the club should have done is replace him properly, so that the ridiculous shortage you rightly refer to never arose.

Jules - we've all heard about the golf club but isn't it possible that there was some exaggeration regarding what actually happened? Did Riise miss any games as a result of Bellers' attempt to improve his handicap?
It doesn't seem long since the days of Kenny, Rushie etc. Rushie mentions in his book a night out during a post season European tour. He was so drunk that standing up was no longer possible and he slumped to the floor knocking pint pots all over the place. His best mate, Hodgson, thought someone had knocked him out and therefore proceeded to throw punches at anyone within range which lead to a mass brawl amongst the first team squad. They reported for training with black eyes, cuts and bruises etc.
This happened back when a pre or post season friendly might warrant an inch column three pages from the back of the Echo and therefore it was never reported. Had it happened in this era, the club might have needed to transfer most of the first eleven.
