Reina: I'm a Scouser now and I'll stay for another five years

Sep 4 2011 by Dean Jones, The People

PEPE REINA says he could stay at Liverpool for another FIVE years.

Reina (below) was on Manchester United’s list of possible replacements for Edwin van der Sar as Fernando Torres’ departure from Anfield made him rethink his future.

But the Spanish keeper made his mind up to stay as the club flourishes under Kenny Dalglish and can now see himself completing a decade at the club.

He said: “The intention is to continue here.

“When I came here I never thought I would stay for seven years.

“Now the plan is to make it 10 or 12. Everyone is different but I have been lucky that my wife is very happy here and my children as well.

“I’m a Scouser now. The affection of the people here is tremendous and I really appreciate it.”

Reina already has two daughters born in Liverpool and now a three-month-old son. He joked: “We are trying for a volleyball team.”

Awesome. I didn't like that he had his head turned, but we were in the absolute shit in the first half of last season, it's semi-understandable and some of his quotes were taken out of context. He is the best goalkeeper in the league and one of the top keepers in the world. Pepe is ace.

Yeah, i was a bit annoyed with some of his comments back then but in fairness I guess it's pretty normal to question things when a fair few of your friends and fellow spaniards are all jumping ship for so called "bigger" clubs. I hope he's rewared for staying put with some success soon because lesser keepers are winning things ahead of him .

Actually sometimes i feel he doesn't get the credit he deserves ...ok I think by this stage he is regarded as one of the best in the prem ,if not the best (fuck even that gimp Andy Gray can see he is the best) , but in europe and in Spain I feel he's overlooked because of Cassilas and Valdes and the clubs they are at . Now obviously I'm a little bit bias but i personally think he is better and more consistant than both and i'd have him any day of the week ahead of those two. And all this talk of that cock De Gea being the next spain keeper , well at the moment he's got nothing on pepe .

A very important part of our team .... there isn't another keeper in the PL I'd have ahead of him and when he's goes he's going to be very very difficult to replace. I too hope we win something major soon for the likes of Pepe, Stevie and Carra (preferably the PL and preferably this year) !

The prospect of a Liverpool team without Reina is just wrong. The club should do all it can to keep him happy.

Pepe's head was turned and it pissed me off no end. That he chose to stay is great for the club, that he wants to stay for another 5 years or so is fantastic.

He doesn't get the credit he deserves but it happens to most Liverpool players. So I hope that we win some silverware to put a gloss on his career.

Great news! Certainly one of the best keepers in our history, and if he stays for 5 more years will probably be remembered as the greatest of them all.

you hardly notice great keepers when they are there but you certainly miss them when they are gone. for the record manu's keeper looks disasterous.

He already is as far as I'm concerned.

So is he signing that contract extension that has been on the table for the last six month then?
The one that takes out the £20m release clause.

The alleged £20m release clause.
I said at the time, I did not think it was in Pepe to do anything daft, and it could have been he was happy to perpetuate the rumours to put more pressure on the rebuilding need.

Ha, I'm delighted to have had the pleasure of watching him play for us and I don't think it's OTT to say he's probably the best keeper I've seen between the sticks for us, I do expect him to move on at some point though. Great lad and a top, top player. I don't think I've seen a keeper who can 'play' like he can, he's an old fashioned sweeper and goalie in one.

Agree with the bit after the comma. I haven't changed my view that responding "never say never" to a question about whether he'd join the Mancs was a serious misjudgement, but all's well that ends well.

Yeah, the point is he's still here. We heard nothing from Ming before his departure. Actions and all that.

You need to read his exact comments mate, he didn't quite do that.

“I think it’s hard for me to come back to Spain to play. I think my place is in England – and right now that is with Liverpool,.
It’s hard to see me returning to Spain. Barcelona and Madrid are the two teams you would aspire to in Spain and that’s impossible.
Van der Sar is hanging up his gloves and people say that Arsenal are looking.
I can’t do or say anything; I renewed my contract with Liverpool last year. But what a player wants, logically, is to challenge for titles.
I would like to think that the departure of players does not mean that we are slipping.
I think Liverpool will always be a big club but we have to be realistic and the reality is that right now we are not at the level of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal. That’s the truth.

Sorry, Foxy, that's out of context and therefore gives only half the story. Those words were his answer to a direct question about whether he would join those buggers.

Good
[/quote] Fan-bloody-tastic more like

It was when he was asked about other top clubs needing a keeper, specifically Arsenal & Utd though, & this was his answer.

"Yes, well Van der Sar will hang up his gloves in the summer so of course they are looking.
"I can't do anything. I can't say anything logically as I have a contract with Liverpool.
"Of course one likes to fight for titles and be in a team that does that.
"We always fought to be in the Champions League and try to win the title.
"But unfortunately it hasn't been the case in the last couple of years."

Look, I don't want to get hung up on this now he's staying, but he was asked specifically if he'd join them. There's no issue about what he said. The issue is about whether it was a sensible response to the specific question which was put to him. I didn't think it was then and I still don't.

Whilst I don't want to get hung up on it either, I think it's unfair to hold it against him though cos it wasn't that cut & dried.

I cant find the original anywhere, but that wasn't the question he was asked, that was what Sky & the Daily Mail said:

it was actually a couple of interviewers in discussion with reina and torres, talking about the national team as well as their respective clubs.

reina was saying that he is now the last of the spanish in liverpool and that the club is in a time of transition. there are other spanish speakers in suarez, maxi but it feels different.

he says that liverpool is always and has always been a big team, but its currently not on level of others like arsenal, man u, chelsea and man city. currently liverpool are not challenging so you have to respect decision of torres and hopes fans will remember good times he gave us.
he jokes that torres believes he's the best and so he has to go for it

torres comes on and presenters joke that he's deserted his spanish friend. torres hopes the fans understand his motives and decisions
blah blah, opportunities, blah blah. they all say that football is like that now. reina and torres agree that is normal for players to change clubs now if they think there are better opportunities elsewhere. torres says he still feels a lot for the city and the people.

torres says it felt very strange playing against his old team mates at first, but as game went on he felt ok. he jokes that reina asked him not to score. through the whole thing its obvious that reina and torres are good friends. torres says he doesn't feel pressure from the price paid for him because he was already most expensive signing at liverpool. he wanted to get over year of injuries and disappointment in all aspects of his play but liverpool due to all the shít going on wasn't offering him what he needed, chelsea seemed to be the light at the end of the tunnel for him.

reina says again that the hardest thing is saying goodbye to friends, they both talk about the pleasure of sharing family life which is now finished between them.

reina says his place is in england and a return to spain would be difficult, especially as the 2 biggest teams have good keepers. the interviewer mentions that man u and arsenal are looking for keepers. reina agrees that they are and that he can't say anything as his contract is with liverpool. he admits that everybody likes being in teams that fight for titles. he says liverpool always fought for titles but sadly liverpool last 2 years not like that. he wants to be with the best and win things.

Let's agree to differ. He's ours now for the foreseeable future and I have zero doubt that he'll do his level best, or that it'll be more than good enough.

Fair enough.

He's certainly the best keeper I have ever seen. His confidence is amazing, from 'sweeping' to marshalling the defence, controlling his wall (I love the way he leaves a large gap so he can see the ball as he knows he can save it), & most importantly, when he does fuck up, his head doesnt go for the rest of the match. That is exceptionally rare in a keeper.

Someone said he's worth X amount of points in a season to us, & I think that's spot on, it's hard to quantify but he's worth a lot in that respect.
