Robertson emerges as bargain for Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk’s debut winner may have been the big story on the pitch, and the FA investigation into the Firmino-Holgate incident continues to dominate headlines from Friday’s Merseyside derby but the best player on the night was Andrew Robertson. Since Alberto Moreno’s injury a month ago, the Scot has been superb and kept Everton’s main attacking threat – Yannick Bolasie – deathly quiet at Anfield. Nobody had more touches than Robertson and he won 81.8% of his duels, winning the ball back eight times. It is the 23-year-old’s defensive instincts and decision-making that set him apart from most other full-backs, including Moreno, and going forward only Ashley Young is a better crosser of a ball from left-back in the Premier League. After a slow start to life at Liverpool since his summer move from Hull City, that £8m is starting to look like a bargain.

Do you think there are other hidden treasures in Scotland we could find ? I was simply amazed by him the other night.

Way to early to get carried away.

The derby was the first game where he's really looked like he could be good enough.

At least we shouldn't have to look at Moreno again.

Celtic is always a good place to look, they constantly blood players that go onto bigger and better things.

I'd have loved Tierney and Dembele in the summer

Robertson has been great - his chance has been long overdue. I was starting to think Klopp had some sort of agenda against him.

Hopefully, this form continues and with TAA on the other side we are ok for fullbacks. Neither world class, but you never need world class fullbacks.

Then in the middle of the defence we've got VVD with Gomez up and coming. You never know, if we get a better keeper, then we may see more from Lovren and Matip too. Suddenly our defence isn't too bad.

With Keita coming in the summer, a new keeper (if the Allison rumours are true), we are only a shit-hot striker from having a proper spine. Rejoice!

Apart from all the other games where he's performed well and barely made a mistake (if any). I know you said from the off that he wouldn't make it because you'd watched loads of him, but come on Pat. For a renowned Moreno hater, you're baffling me here. The lad has been spot on from the word go.

Defends well, attacks well, has composure, good technique, great positional sense. But apart from that he's shite.

He's looked good enough every time the has played for us. What left backs have you guys seen all these years that has been so out of this world ? - I think when it comes to what we expect from our left backs and right backs - people on this site are imagining shit for some reason. Whenever I look at the other teams in this league - I don't see anyone who is so outstanding that I think - Oh Yeah - I want to replace him with that guy. Fucking hell - the only one that has been atrocious for us was when we played Djimi Traore in their a few times - fuck it was so bad - it was funny/comedy.

He's done ok in the other games nothing more IMO and I highlighted LB as an area I really wanted top quality to come in and own that position so was obviously underwhelmed when it was him we got in the summer.

I wanted a top class well establish full back who instantly improve the team like Salah or VVD have now.

It'll be the same if we get another keeper I won't want one that needs 6 months to bed in and look the part I'll want one to come in and own it from day 1.

Back to our new left back, as it is it's taken 6 months for us to see a truly commanding performance from
him.

I actually think he's been average at best going forward before the derby and wanted so much more from him.

If he turns out to nail down that spot and go onto be fantastic then great but right now being better than Moreno isn't exactly hard.

For me, the derby was what I wanted to see from a left back from the start of the season week in week.

He's done it once so I'll wait and see if he continues to.

Hopefully he does and obviously the end of Moreno the useless prick

Awesome performance v Everton and I'm a big fan but not sure about the crossing stats. Way too many end up in the crowd or fail to find one of our players on a cut back. Still a massive improvement on Moreno in every department though

I am cheerful about a lot these days. But I'll put a special mention to Lallana looking quite fresh after a lengthy speil on sidelines.

We're not defending like Arsenal

That’s shockingly bad!

Meanwhile, if Moreno comes back and gets his starting spot back - something is not right. Robertson is clearly the better player of the 2 and should be our starting LB.

3 points off second place in the league
Signed one of the best CBs in the prem
In the knockout stages of CL
Still in the FA cup
Mo Salah
Andrew Robertson
Jurgen Klopp
Bobby Firmino's form
Our attacking football
Some very exciting youngsters in the reserves
Naby Keita coming in the summer

There's loads to be happy and positive about.

Ha.

We are gonna win the CL.
We have a CB who can dominate in the air.
We have Mane.
We have Salah.
We have Klopp.

After the Coutinho deal, we have an overall negative net spend under Klopp, which means we have a gigantic amount of money for new players. One day.

Or a bigger stand.

But you would hope we do as we still need,

A GK
A CB
A ACM
A CF

And depending on our new left back if he doesn't continue to show his derby form we need another LB.

Ideally I'd love someone told class to come and own that spot and have him as an understudy and sell Moreno.

We have Clyne, TAA and Gomez for RB we only have two options for LB, one is a disaster and the other hasn't shown enough yet to forget about strengthening the position.

Bristol have been braver against City than any premier league team this season. They will probably get spanked second half but bravo to them.
