Oh, and Dirk was excellent. As he always is when it counts.
I loathe this attitude. "When it counts" he's excellent? So the past few months (Where most fans, including his biggest supporters, admits he was well below par, and I bet he'd say that too), the games he was shit in "didn't count"? EVERY game counts if you want to win the league - or any trophy for that matter.

He was excellent tonight and I, for whatever reason, though this was the game he 'turns' his season around. We need him to play at this level every game if we have any shot at 4th (that on keeping Torres, Gerrard, Riera and Aqua on the pitch)
Big Games LeTall, like tonight's. He always performs in them. Of course you could argue that every game we'd have over this hideous run of form has been a 'big' one given our plight, but he hasn't been the only one out of form has he?

And despite all of this, he's still managed 8 goals this season.
How about against Lyon x2? Or Reading x2? Those were big games too ...

I know you like him but put that aside, when we were crying out for good performances the past 2-3 months from all our players, he rarely answered the call. That he had a great game yesterday shouldn't take away from the fact he's been nowhere to be found more often than not this season.

I'm curious how many of those 8 goals were from RW and ST (the last 4 if I'm not mistaken were from the striker spot).

As for Dirk Kuyt, well I have supported (and defended) him for as long as Ryan, but it is laughable to proclaim he's delivered 'when it counts' yet again.

Because he's also been fairly atrocious 'when it counts' on several occasions this season

Still, well played last night, and hopefully this can be the start of another goal glut

Oh and Ryan, I'd pick on someone else if I were you; I have two advantages over you - I'm a bit cleverer, plus I genuinely don't fucking *care*, so it's all a bit pointless, really

It's for the best

I'll continue abusing rubbish players, and you can keep boring the tits off your miniscule internet fanclub with your lengthy, shit, boring and often very wrong chalkboard tactics

Kay? Kay
Cept the two sitters he missed. The second of which was tragic. That said neither was as bad as Degen bottling it and not even having the gumption to shoot. I like Degen and I think he's a pretty good squadie but the last two games should see him never played at rm again.
I'd like to see our best players play in their best positions now we have a bit of momentum. For the time being that means
Lucas
mascherano

maxi
aqui
riera

kuyt

hope this isn't at odds with what Rafa has seen.

I'm not too bothered about those sitters he missed. The goals he scored must give him a boost confidence wise. As long as Torres is out we need a striker with confidence and the ability to score goals.

On a different note I'm also made up for Carra as he's had a great game again yesterday. I hope he keeps it up and that some people wrote him off too early.

N'Gog pissed me off with his 10 minute appearance last night. He was strong, direct, skillful, fast and confident - almost Drogba-like. If he has that ability/attitude why have we been watching the moody, lethargic, docile N'Gog recently.

Reina - 6 Some good punches and generally comanding, one gaff that he and the Greek got away with.

Carra - 7 Started poorly, giving possession away and generally running into trouble, got alot better.
Zorba - 8 Commanding, great in the air and a threat for us from setpieces
Skrtel - 7 Mopped things up well and brought the ball out from the back in the first half. Solid.
Insua - 6 Not much came down his side, which goes to show how exposed he's been with Yossi and co.

Masher - 7 Everywhere, a bit dirty but that's what we needed, someone to get amongst them.
Lucas - 6 Played some good balls in and around the area but gave away possession too many times.
Riera - 7 Provided good balance, passing and looked a general threat. Welcome back.
Degen - 6 Not bad, not great either, at least helped Carra quell the threat of Bale.

Aquilani - 7 Good movement, passing and general trickery. Spurs closed him down 2nd half though.
Kuyt - 8 MOTM, great display capped with two fine goals and a calmly taken penalty retake. Great player.

Pretty much agree with all of that Mark, bar small amendments to Lucas and Aquaman who are perhaps a point too high.

Good perfromance, nice to see some good old fashioned effort and hustling in there, and with Kuyt up front supported by some creativity our set-up looked "right" for the first time in ages. Lots to be positive about, but we must maintain the momentum.

I'd like to see Gerrard replace Lucas rather than Aqua in the starting XI when he returns.
Could you imagine anything more nausiating than an evening discussing football with those two?

Ryan-I think you'll find that in the 56th minute benitez changed and pushed Lucas 4 inches closer to Insua to nullify the threat Modric was beginning to cause, this was as per usual perfect and visionary tactics from our genius manager
Brendan-Lucas is a cunt, a big mong cunty mong.
Ryan-I think your failing to asses the work he does off the ball in closing down the opposition forwards.
Brendan-Hes a cunt, with a big Tongue, momo was a cunt but less so.
Ryan-ah Brendan you've unwittingly raised an interesting point there regarding the fundamental difference in our style of play since the momo days, now we play more to the strengths of the unit as a whole enabling individual elements to have more freedom.
Brendan-That insua is a cunt too, fucking sloooooooooooow midget slow cunt.
Ryan-he reads the game so well
Brendan-he doesn't play it very well the cunt.
Me-errr there's somewhere I've gotta be lads
Ryan-hmmmm now that's interesting, the whe dynamic of our table works on a 1-1-1 formation, it will be interesting to see what difference this makes to our overall chat.
Brendan-Hes a cunt, dribbling, handicapped or cunty cunt cunt.
Me-Yeeeeeeessss have a good night lads.

Hahaha. I do well as a lone couch-er at 5 in the morning. Fuck this 1-1-1 formation shit.

Also you have cut out the part where you do an emotional about face and temporarily decide that you want to spend the rest of your lives with them.

Well, there will be a next time, especially with my parents moving back to England, unfortunately there's the small matter of me getting married which is raping me of all my money money and time off.

Err, I mean, thank god I've found the love of my life so that I can spend time consulting with florists rather than going to football games and traveling.

Reina - 7. Kept us in it a couple of times, his best save was from the header and the ref blew.

Carra - 7.5 A true captains performance, never say die continually rallying the troops and organising
Skrtel - 6 Did what he had to, defence kept a clean sheet, against some very tricky opposition
Kyriakos- 8 Second great performance on the trot, keeps it simple, good in the air and kept Crouchy at bay
Insua - 6 See Skrtle (I don't know why people are having a bit of a pop either)

Degen - 7 Sunny has just slammed the lad, I usually agree with Sunny, but can't on this occasion. Playing out of position, he really tried his best, he was putting himself in where it hurt, he was right in front of us second half, and at the end was almost dead on his feet. Perhaps that is why he got a proper standing ovation when he came off.
Masher - 8 It's difficult to accept Mascher has or had any real doubts about staying when he plays like this
Lucas - 5 Yes, he's limited and was our Achilles heal tonight
Riera - 7.5 Good return to the team, looked sharp and motivated, and what a lot of us have been saying, he brings a great balance to the team, and his corner taking is much better than Mr G's and his free kick delivery was good too....A much much better 0ption than Aurelio

Aqualani - 7.5 . I think a lot of people have missed his contribution and the significance of it. Tonight he showed us glimpses of the player he hopefully will be, fantastic touch and awareness, but more than that he seems to be coming to terms with the pace of the prem, without him Dirk could have had a very ordinary night.

Kuyt - 7.5 Hat's off to Dirk, he has had a pretty crap season (BTW Ryan every premiership game is a big game you get the same points for beating Stoke as you do for United . Tonight he showed his usual work rate and a bit more, great first goal, and kept his head for the two pens.

N'gog - 7 Who knows what to make of him? He looked as good when he came on last night as he looked shit against Stoke. One things for sure we can't rely on him yet

Maxi - A couple of nice little touches, I think he has it (Riera on the left , Maxi on the right)

Rafa - 7.5 Well not his biggest supporter , but he got it right tonight, I was very worried about the Kuyt / Aqalani formation, but it mainly worked. He resisted the urge to tinker with substitutions and mainly used them when needed.

That's pretty much spot on rating-wise imo.

*I'd probably give Skrtel and Insua 7s though as they all stood their ground very well in defense last night.

I appreciate he was out of position Vlad and he certainly looked uncomfortable there. I can't agree he put a load of effort in if I'm honest and I wasn't alone from conversation during and after the match. A few specific instances spring to mind. One was when Carra had to put on the brakes on because Degen just stood there. Secondly Carragher overtook the lad at one point to get to a ball. And what he was doing squaring the ball the the left corner flag when through on goal I don't know. I just didn't think the effort or commitment was there and his movement was pedestrian at best. I know lots of people disagree with me on this - that's OK - but I stand by my opinion. To put it into context- I've no agenda against him and he's actually been better than I expected him to be but I think he's been gash in the last two games. He improved a little in the last 20 minutes of the game so, to give him some credit, I may raise my scoring from a 2 to a 3.

Maybe a little harsh - I dont think you can fault his effort, he's just not very good in the defensive third, and not very good in the attacking third, so theres only a limited amount of space on the pitch for him to operate in effectively!

He did get a good send off from the crowd, though maybe this was a reflection of how pleased they were with the performance of the team in general.

A quick word about Harry Redknapp - who is not universally loved on here - but some of his pre and post match comments were very suppportive of the club, which was nice to see.

I'm not sure Ryan would argue his case quite so sensibly but you have got Brendan spot on.

Maybe I am being a bit harsh. Overall, I was well pleased with the performance

Kuyt does have a habit of performing on the big occasion, but TLW is right, every game has been massive recently and he hasn't performed. I mean it was only 3 days ago he missed a glorious opportunity to give us 3 points at Stoke, which in some circumstances could have saved his bosses job. I'm not getting at Dirk, he was clearly on MOTM last night, but I'm not ready to start praising one of our under-performing senior players just yet.

We should definitely be playing him as a striker though. I think he's a much better player up front and N'gog should come on to partner him - not replace him.
