Fuck me, with those ratings you'd assume we went out there and played champagne football for 90 minutes. I know we've been starved of good football, but lets try and keep a bit of perspective.

It was a spirited performance, but by no means a quality one. The best thing about tonight's game was the result.
Don't quite agree, Del.

Best thing about tonights game was the effort in the first half and the commitment in the 2nd half to hang on. Make no mistake, Spurs threw a hell of a lot more at us than Stoke did but we still held them scoreless. That was a great effort.

The result was huge and we're right back in there for 4th, a clean sheet was great as well but, in terms of the rest of the season, that's two performances dripping with effort and commitment in succession; we haven't done that all season. That's the first time we've turned the corner in I don't know how long.
The effort was fantastic, agreed. I just think that if you're handing out 8s and 9s almost across the board then it's a little over the top. What happens when we show spirit AND quality? 11s? 12s?

I don't want to put a dampener on a great night though. It just irks me slightly when we see such spirit and passion when it's been nowhere to be seen for far too long. They owed us (and the manager) this performance. For me, hero status is far from being restored. Yet.

How is Insua only getting a 5 in some? He was a part of a defence that kept a clean sheet did nothin wrong. I'm not his biggest fan but he didn't play poorly. He really benefits with having Albert in front of him.

The Lucas shit is just boring at his stage now. He didn't play overly well but some would try and make out he cost us the game or something. Many expected Palacios to monster him, he didn't.

What's the fucking point in this? And you?

We won, a very good victory, inspired by great tactics and some excellent individual displays. All in all a hugely commendable team performance. Thus, fucking plenty there for all to discuss. And this is your contribution, as it is every fucking week, every fucking day.

Stick to Music & Film Bren, cos you're clueless, boring and one of the most nauseatingly repetitive cunts to ever 'grace' this forum.

It's getting seriously boring now re Lucas, we fucking get it!
Insua went about his business quietly and I don't remember any unforced mistakes.

I'm usually loathe to do indicidual ratings, but a word for some of our lesser lights of late to Insua, Skrtel, and Aquilani.

I thought Insua played Modric perfectly. Skrtel didn't give defoe and inch, and aquilani (bar a few hairy moments) was quite impressive. It should be clear to everyone by now that he's got prodigous talent, if he can ally that with some betetr decision-making an a much improved work-rate defensively then we'll have a player. That'll come through games.

Oh, and Dirk was excellent. As he always is when it counts.

Because generally he's just another brainless, average Benitez player. Whether that's because he's been handled poorly remains to be seen. He certainly shouldn't be a permanent fixture.

The ratings are supposed to be based on the performance in todays game..not generally.

Not that I mind like - your left wing and right wing views can stir the pot pretty well. Still, you've worn this track to death and generally come across as a parody of yourself whenever you comment on him these days. Maybe you've got yourself stuck in a rut, maybe it's a mid life crisis or maybe you died last year and your laptop is imitating AI; whatever, your comments on him are such dross these days it's like he jilted you.

Half way through the game I thought you'd be starting a ratings thread as a front to comment on the performance of Lucas being a disgrace.

The ratings aren't based on "generally", they are based on tonight's game, in which Insua played well.

Yep, I agree on nearly all of that.

I spent aout an hour last week defending Dirk in some Babel thread and I knew he would bounce back to score some important goals for us. Still gutted he didn't stick that header against Stoke.

I was worried at one stage that Skrtel was allowing Defoe a bit too much space, but he got tight and kept him quiet for most of the game.

Excellent posts by ILD & Ryan (second one) in this thread. This thread is proof that people are judging a players performance by his rep. Insua had his best game if the season for us. Modric is surperb footballer IMO, excellent at finding space and picking a good final ball. He was kept out of the game completely.

Anyone who gives his performance a 5 clearly has a fucking agenda.

As many have already said, what as that got to do with the 90 mins tonight. Generally Torres plays well, should he get a 9 for every game once he is back.

Aaaaarrghhhh!! Ruined an excellent post with the last 7 words.

Insua and Skrtel were far better tonight - particularly Skrtel who really did well to look after Defoe.

Aquilani still looked light but the prediction on here that he looked suited to the AM role and definitively not to the CM or DM role was almost confirmed 100% tonight.

Dirk was excellent tonight.

NO! Not in a million years is he always excellent when it counts!!!

He's only ever excellent when it counts but there have been inumerable matches where it counted and he was anything but excellent!

I know he's one of your favourite players and you think he brings balance to the team with the way he plays but that's largely only true when people like Torres, Gerrard etc are providing class in bucket loads.

Tonight was not about class but about utter subborn, pig headed determination and commitment no matter what. For that Dirk is and always will be the absolute epitomy of poster boy and iconic leader - he was again tonight.

Oh, and a very big WORD for N'Gog's contribution when he came on. Made a cock out of bassong several times, held the ball up well, won free-kicks when udner pressure, and the decisive penalty.

Put the shite game from the weekend behind him, and made a positive contribution.

I thought Rafa's substitutions were perfect actually.

Ok, we won and we won with a clean sheet. It wasn't a spawny 7-6 with shitty defending nor inspired forward play but a professional 2-0 victory over the team in 4th place in the league.

In addition no-one had an outright shocka, so htf can anyone get less than 5/10?

I just don't geddit.

Unless you have an agenda of course.

Yes, that's the same. At the other end of the extreme people like you go completely over the top over any decent performance from those who are usually singled out for abuse. I'm struggling to even remember anything of note defensively or in attack from Insua tonight. He was nothing more than ok, and he's generally a huge weak link.

The pride in shirt was there tonight. In particular from Mascherano, Kuyt, Reina, Carragher and Riera they looked so hungry and up for it tonight. It was great to see that pride and heart again.

One other thing, the two touches by Aquilani leading up to the goal were absolutely world class! The quickness of mind and control were just amazing. So happy to see him start to look the player we want him to be.

Missed the game 🙁 was wondering if anyone could give a more in depth analysis of Riera's play tonight. Did he look fit, how was his crossing? I have looked through a lot of the numbers and him playing directly correlates to us playing better and winning more.

Maxi's willingness to drift in and be involved in the build-up to the second was heartening too.

N'gog had a lovely 10 mins to get his confidence back. Won a penalty, put a ball on a plate for Dirk and had a decent shot on goal after great work to get ahead of te defender.

On a side note, assist for Maxi to N'gog to win the penalty. Subs all did well, poor the Babel watching on.

It was!

He looked like he came on with some attitude, annoyed at his own performance or perhaps some of the criticism that came his way after Stoke. Either way he came on with the right approach (Babel take note). The decision by Rafa to bring him on surprised me - but in a good way. It was the right move, an aggressive move and it won us 3 points; maybe he should have an argument with every opposing manager during the game. 🙂

I mentioned Maxi's pass for the pen in the match thread. It was a great little ball under pressure and the kind of composure and quality we've been lacking in the final third.
