I wonder if Leeds fans remember much of David Batty?

Gini is multiple levels above David Batty as a footballer. While we are at it, can we please stop comparisons to Colin Hendry, Lee Bowyer, etc. I have not been a fan of Gini's performances this season but he does not merit comparisons to these players. It is an insult to him. You think David Batty is capable of this:

Who here is over 60, with grandkids, and remembers the 88 team? Which players do you reminisce about? Are players like Venison, Spackman, Houghton, Ablett, and Tanner vivid in your memories?

Any of them scored 2 goals in the greatest European cup semi-final of all time?

I'm a little surprised that people are having a go at Wijnaldum.

Fact is that we have had to win the last five games to salvage something from this dreadful season. We've played four, won four, Wijnaldum has started three of those four and was captain against Burnley. I think Klopp knows better than we do whether someone is trying or has a bad attitude or whatever and if there was a problem he wouldn't be playing them, let alone giving them the captaincy.

If he leaves it will be a shame, and we will miss him, but he'll leave with best wishes and thanks because he's been a bloody good player for us.

Tanner (who wasn't at the club then) is sadly very vivid in my memory, but for the wrong reasons.

Fucking brilliant?
He's had fucking brilliant moments - starting with the goal that got us into the CL (I think against Newcastle?).
But he's struggled to impose himself in many games.
I know he's been key this season, as @Whaddapie says, just because he's there and was holding our midfield together which was ravaged by the CB mess and CM injuries.
However, his celebration after Allisson's goal was very very very very weird.
How can you explain that? A guy the whole team loves, scoring a massive goal and everyone is going insane like it's the final of the CL and Gini doesn't even lift his arms, just jogs over as if it was a given in the 95th minute. Give me a good explanation, and I'll run with you but I just can't think of one meself.
Reading into something that isn’t there. He’s just a laid back Dutch dude. Really can’t be doing with the amateur psychology/body language expert stuff.

Nah - we've seen him celebrate enough goals and teammate goals to know how he celebrates ...
That was way way off - and that's a fair assessment considering how fucking happy everyone else was.
Oh well, he's been amazing, and he'll be clapped off (hopefully subbed off with us comfortably ahead to soak it all in one last time).

Poor lad, a trier in fairness but probably the worst player I've ever seen in a Liverpool shirt. Jan Molby is said to have responded thusly to someone asking who his worst Liverpool teammate was: "Nicky Tanner. He was sh!t. He'd come in to training each day and somehow manage to be worse than the day before."

Players I particularly remember include Steve Nicol, LFC's best ever utility player (Emlyn Hughes included), and that magic front three of Beardsley, Aldo and Digger.

Gini has been fucking brilliant for us. The attitude to him from some is truly bizarre. The idea that he’s not trying or doesn’t care is also absolute fucking shit.
This is utter bollocks. He's the only reason we even have a chance to make the top 4, with the way he held us together through the late autumn and early winter.

Honestly, the shite that some of you lot are spouting about Gini these past few months is utter shash.
The man Gini runs around in a midfield that statistically that is only 2nd to Leeds when it comes to pressing and some want to question his in-game commitment?

He deserves a a great send off, and I wish him well!

Or do you just remember a great fucking team, with both superstars and role players..? They all played their parts.

This line of arguing feels quite silly. We don't win #5 in Istanbul with Djimi Traore, lads. And Gini is no Djimi Traore.

Calling a comparison to Stuart Pearce an insult is a bit strange, horse... That psycho is a legend.

We don't need to explain anything, mate... We just need him to keep trying his best, giving his all.

You've latched onto this as if it somehow defines him - It doesn't. Maybe he's sooooooo fucking knackered, he didn't have the strength? Maybe he was waiting for VAR to fuck us again? Maybe he's sad to be leaving, and couldn't muster the will? It doesn't matter - He's still giving his all, and that's all that we need.

If it defines him, it's only in the present.
I just want 100% commitment for one more game ...and I don't think he's 100% there (I thought he was bang average at best against Burnley). - be it b/c of fatigue or because he's checked out.
It doesn't erase anything he's done as I said, I just want to ensure we do what we thought was unthinkable a few weeks ago, and start planning (to unfortunately match what City did this year) for a league and CL double next year.

Errr... look up a few posts.

And fuck you, I'm not over 60!!

Gini has been Steady Eddie, Mr Reliable but I said in 30 years will we be talking about him? If you want comparable, he is the Steve Burrows of the modern era.

Stuart Pearce had passion, grit, determination but was very limited in his abilities, which people overlook. He just a louder version of David Batty

I'll certainly talk of some of his goals, yes... The two he got THAT night will live forever, if nothing else. And don't forget that he scored the winner in Rome in the semi final the year before, too.

He also bagged a couple of my favourites in recent years... That header Vs City a few years back to beat them 1-0. The first, that end-of-season match, when we had to win to get into the European Cup (V Middlesborough, I think). A couple of years back, that glorious lob (Vs Bournemouth, I think). And didn't he get the goal Vs Athleti last season. Yes, when we speak of big goals, his name should come up.

For me, he's quite comparable to - if not quite on the same level as - Ronnie Whelan... Lots of big, big goals, and criminally underrated by many. Never looked sexy in a team of sexy superstars, taken for granted a lot, but dearly missed when he's not there.

You're back! 🙂 Missed you ole timer.
How's vlad doing?

Vlad is doing fine! He and I have been wrestling with the seriously clunky LFC website adding the "friends and family" to our accounts because the new season ticket arrangements with admission by QR code means we can no longer just swap the season tickets around between us.

If you pull on the arm band look like you are already elsewhere you’ll ruin any of your previous efforts for me.

Do those that have followed Liverpool since the 60s mention Whelan's name? They have 6 decades of memories, hell lot of legends they've seen come and go. Hopefully when I have grandkids, I too will see players becoming legends and pass the Anfield tunnel. I'm not so sure I will remember Wini as much as I will, Fab, Robbo, TAA, Virg, Ali, Salah, Hendo, Mane, Bobby and Millie.

Those who understand the game and truly appreciate that greatness comes in many forms do. Amoungst those who've seen it all, both fans and players, who's opinions I value, he's rated very highly. People like Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, for example.

P.S. What's Millie (whom I love also) done above and beyond Gini's career to warrant special mention from you? At this point, I think that this is based more on your personal likes / dislikes, than on actually objectively assessing respective careers with us.

I was very young when Ronnie played for Liverpool, remember him being reliable but had tendency to score own goals. I vaguely remember liking Steve Macman (sp), but I am having trouble remembering why.
Who you remember is very much subjective. When I think of the Barca game, the Div goal sticks out at me. Let's see in 30 years, do we talk about Gini as we will no doubt talk about Salah, Hendo, VVD etc...
