Do those that have followed Liverpool since the 60s mention Whelan's name? They have 6 decades of memories, hell lot of legends they've seen come and go. Hopefully when I have grandkids, I too will see players becoming legends and pass the Anfield tunnel. I'm not so sure I will remember Wini as much as I will, Fab, Robbo, TAA, Virg, Ali, Salah, Hendo, Mane, Bobby and Millie.
Oh course, Ronnie played for Ireland 😉

Those who understand the game and truly appreciate that greatness comes in many forms do. Amoungst those who've seen it all, both fans and players, who's opinions I value, he's rated very highly. People like Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, for example.

P.S. What's Millie (whom I love also) done above and beyond Gini's career to warrant special mention from you? At this point, I think that this is based more on your personal likes / dislikes, than on actually objectively assessing respective careers with us.
Wow you don’t think Millie deserves greater praise based on performance?
How about 26 goals almost all being clutch especially penalties under huge pressure.
Not to mention 40 assists.
Gini has 22 with maybe 5 stand out goals.
And with 16 assists the bulk coming in his first season.

It’s clear football wise alone Milner has had a much greater impact on the club.

You need to look beyond the stats - Gini was a key part of both CL and PL wins, more so than Milner. Yes, Milner was an important part but Gini was a different level of importance to everything clicking.

I’ve always had a huge issue with a lack of effort especially from a captain or senior squad member.

Lack of effort, me hole. Were you awake in the autumn and winter? He's not not trying - He's fucking shattered.

I actually don't think that you watch our games... I think that you read stats and the opinions of others, and then regurgitate whatever one you choose to spew forth today, to get the most reaction.

No. No it's not.

I was very young when Ronnie played for Liverpool, remember him being reliable but had tendency to score own goals. I vaguely remember liking Steve Macman (sp), but I am having trouble remembering why.
Who you remember is very much subjective. When I think of the Barca game, the Div goal sticks out at me. Let's see in 30 years, do we talk about Gini as we will no doubt talk about Salah, Hendo, VVD etc...

Own goals? Two, that I can remember... Tell me - Will you tell your grandkids of Jamie Carragher?

And you probably remember Macca because he too was a fucking wonderful player who also scored some cracking goals for one of our greatest ever sides.

Well then no point discussing. As someone who’s spent 13 years getting at 12am - 5am to watch us I’ve little time to justify whether you think I watch our games or not.
I couldn’t care less what others think of my views clearly. I state them as I see the game. For me he’s playing like someone who’s checked out which is unforgivable for me when you pull on the arm band. Others can look past that, no problem. Doesn’t mean I have to.

You're spot on... More fool me for biting. Don't know why I bother with somebody who's watched this season unfold (apparently) and tries to say that Gini's not trying, when, without him, we'd be looking up at West Ham, fighting for the UEFA Conference, or whatever that shite is called... Lunacy.

Take care.

Since I'm all about getting along and such, why not consider that his play can appear to be uncommitted and checked out for the very reason that he's shattered? Everyone can agree he looked dead on his feet second half of last game but he's played about a million games and not had the benefit of a few weeks injury vacation.

This is not directed at anybody personally, but for all of those claiming that he didn't care about Allison's winner last week, go back and look again... Yes, he took a while to get there, but once he did, he was as happy and as excited about it as the rest of them.

On Gary Ablett, I thought he was total bollocks, definitely the worst player in that side at the time, but my mates dad had the sefton arms which was the pub right by the entrance to aintree race course. Anyways three of us were playing three and in in the car park when he comes walking in with his missus and nicked the ball off one of us asking if he could have a game. The difference between him and us was like the difference between Messi and Tony Hibbert. Couldn't get near him, couldn't get anywhere near the ball, all three of us who thought we were half decent banging into each other while he just toyed with us. Actual full time footy players are different levels.

I once played in a silly match against Trevor Hockey. Most of you have never heard of him, but he was a pro (Coventry, I think), and at walking pace, he made those of us who were actually trying to impress him look like we'd never player the game before.

Nice stories. Reminds me of that Zidane video when he plays indoor footie with his mates in Marseille.

My college team played a friendly against a semi pro team in Southern California. Nothing special about their roster. Until we started the game and saw Juergen Klinnsman (he played under a fake name) across from us.

He was older but the speed of his thought and decision making were light years ahead of everyone. No one could touch him. Still fast and mad skills. But his brain - unbelievable.

Pro athletes are barely even the same species as us.

Birmingham City, no great shakes of a team in other words, and he wasn't their best player either. But we pretty much haven't played the same game as such guys before - they're so far ahead of us it's almost a different sport altogether. Back in the day the manager of the sports centre where a bunch of work colleagues and I used to play five-a-side on Tues.and Thurs.afternoons reached his 60th birthday, decided to fundraise for the local hospice by playing 60 different sports over the next 12 months and asked to join our five-a-side game one day. He'd played semi-pro for Bromsgrove ******* Rovers as a younger man and thank the stars he joined the team I was on, because the other lot literally couldn't get near him.

At my absolute peak physical condition and pace at 21 I got absolutely raped by Shane Long, could not get near him.

Nice to hear us all bowing to the abilities of these players who we would have ripped to shreds countless times over years.

Nice to have a moment of calm and balance!

It only happened because Long thought Dreamy was a Liverpool fan. The fecker's actually managed to score against us in his time.
