It sounds like Allardyce had gone the full John Beck for this game. Gerrard was just interviewed and said Allardyce had tried all the tricks in the book, from an over-heated changing room to making sure the team coach was left stranded far away from the stadium, etc. How progressive.

I've not been that impressed with Diame when I've seen him. Perhaps I've caught him on off days but too often he lets the ball get away from him and tries to dribble past people too much. He's strong, I'll give him that, but technique and decision making look to be lacking.

Great win, delighted.
Sturidge really needs to up his game for next week. A bit anonymous the last couple of matches. Need him firing on all cylinders....

And of course ice cold veins to score both penalties, especially the second one, with so much riding on it. He was great the whole game for me; didn't rush things, passed neatly, and of course, made some of the boss pings you mentioned. He was easily my MOTM today.

111 passes too !

Allardyce ACTUALLY claimed that the first pen WASN'T HANDBALL!!!

What a deluded cunt!

Diame looks excellent every time we play them. With a ludicrously priced get out clause (2.5 million or something) he'd be a very useful option to bring in. He's a great tackler and strong midfielder but can pass and dribble too. I rate him very highly.

Christ that's amazing. I've always liked him .. would be a great piece of business.

He's a poor homeless man's Yaya Toure.

I think part of the reason he hasn't been moved on for higher fees is because of a heart defect. Here's what Dave Whelan had to say about Diame, when the player decided not to extend at Wigan:

Latics owner aims parting shot at highly-rated Senegalese midfielder who is a free agent after rejecting a new deal at Lancashire club but has seen move to Liverpool break down

EXCLUSIVE
By Rob Stewart

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has taken a swipe at Mohamed Diame by insisting that his departure from the Premier League club is “down to money, money, money”.

The Latics owner hit out at the Senegalese midfielder who is now a free agent after quitting the DW Stadium and is currently seeking a new club after a prospective move to Liverpool – revealed by Goal.com – broke down.

“[Mohamed] Diame is a good player and he is a good lad and we were disappointed that he did not sign for Wigan to be honest because he could not get a club in Spain when he was there three years,” Goal.com.

“So he is available on a free. He unfortunately has the problem with his ticker – his heart – and that is a serious problem. We have always addressed it and sort of helped him along with it. You have to keep that heart machine within 50 yards of him all the time.

“We picked him up when Barcelona had refused him because of his heart and we took the chance and brought him over and I don’t think that he has repaid the faith that we put in him and the chance we gave.

“I don’t think that is the lad – that is the agent giving him all kinds of advice. It’s down to money, money, money. I think he should be able to step back and have a look and think: Who gave me the chance to play in the Premier League? It was Wigan Athletic. He owes a lot to Roberto [Martinez] and I really don’t think he has repaid that.”

The 24-year-old Diame, who joined Wigan from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in 2009, was in line to join Liverpool this summer but his hopes of moving to Anfield faded when Kenny Dalglish was sacked.

Martinez turned down the chance to succeed Dalglish and Whelan has pledged to back the Spaniard as he makes up for the loss of France-born Diame who has been linked with Everton, Tottenham, and Arsenal as well as Sevilla, Malaga and Valencia.

“We have lost three or four players and so Roberto will be in the transfer market and looking for what he wants and I will support him as much as I can,” the sports retail tycoon added

Fucking hell. We won. Again.

I had zero confidence. But we did it!

They didnt water the grass either, so the pitch was very dry. Makes it much harder to play our passing game. Affected Coutinho the most imho. Rodgers said as much after the game.

He would have LOVED to derail us. Here was his chance to prove to the WH support that his lamentable footy could answer the challenge of BR's progressive approach to football.
