Post Match Thread - Liverpool v Manchester United - 3rd September 2012

Post match for the first time in a while I was so proud of being a Liverpool-fan.

The way the fans in the ground delivered YNWA prior to kick-off, the way we conducted ourselves on the pitch as a ball-playing team, the way we controlled the game even after the dismisal against a team of 'Sirs', the way we never gave in despite the refs many vital fuck-ups, the way Gerrard pointed to the sky when he scored, the way our players gave their utmost in every tackle and duel.

Even the way we lost this game.

One team could be proud of themselves yesterday and it wasn't United.

YNWA indeed.

Goin Down, Goin Down,
But we're proud
Goin Down Goin Down
But we're pro-oud.

I do agree, but it's a depressing time as well.

Well, it is when it comes to the table obviously, but yesterday the by far best team didn't win nor get the normal home-team rub of the green, not even close.

We fielded a very youthful team as well, this wasn't Rieras, Nunez, Biscans et all that had a great game against the Mancs it was 17, 18 and 20 years old, that proved a point in at times stylish fashion. Shelvey a bit to eager but again ref probably should've shown both the red there having seen the replay.

I've been shocked for a few weeks now that we failed to get in a striker and I believe it's still of utmost importance come January but we didn't miss one against United. The team was very dynamic and the players made themselves available and we looked a very solid threat throughout, lady luck just didn't smile our way.

Can we continue to perform like this however there's absolutely no reason that we won't win a lot of games from now untill Christmas and give ourselves a breather. Not least Rodgers that really need that win now.

if nothing else that performance gave us hope back after a bleak few months.

Some are saying it wasn't a pen but if Suarez wasn't a tit he might have gotten it.

Is there a slight contradiction there?

RVP's tackle looks nasty in that gif Sunny posted btw.

The Suarez incident was a nailed on pen but you've seen them given many times before. If he hadn't have gone down like he'd been shot then the ref might've been more inclined to give it in theory. The reality is that we wouldn't have gotten any kind of 50/50 decision so it's a moot point.

The Johnson thing is the same - sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't. In the end I felt that he didn't need to make the challenge as the angle had narrowed and Reina had the near post covered.

Without trying to make excuses for our loss can I just add that Evans wrestling Agger in the box was around ten times more a pen than Johnson's softest of soft touches on Valencia - whom btw fell just as theatrical as Suarez in the other end.

The ref had an off-day simple as and not one decision went our way. Shit happens but hopefully over the course of a Season these calls will even themselves out some way or another.

Glen agrees with the "paranoids"

GLEN JOHNSON has accused Manchester United's Antonio Valencia of "cheating" to win a decisive penalty at Anfield - and insists the referee would not have given Liverpool FC a spot-kick if it was Luis Suarez who had gone down in the box.
Robin Van Persie converted an 81st minute spot-kick to hand Alex Ferguson's men victory against 10-man Liverpool on Sunday.
Referee Mark Halsey ruled that Johnson had brought down Valencia in the area but television replays strongly suggest there was no contact from the Reds' defender.
To add to Liverpool's frustrations, they were denied a penalty when Suarez fell under a challenge from Johnny Evans in the second half and Johnson believes the Uruguayan's reputation goes before him.

The England full-back has watched the incident with Valencia countless times and with each viewing his sense of hardship grows.
"I've watched it 50 times in there, not that I needed to - it's not a penalty," said the 28-year-old.
"I didn't touch him. I collided with Pepe, I didn't touch Valencia at all.
"The referee told me he had to give it. He thought I touched him. There was no point me arguing with him on the pitch afterwards because he had already given it.
"It's so frustrating because I've not touched him.
"It's cheating at the end of the day. You don't expect people to do that. This is one of the best leagues in the world and you've got people doing that."
Liverpool played over 50 minutes with 10 men at Anfield and despite their numerical disadvantage, took the lead just after half-time when captain Steven Gerrard struck.
United would equalise through Rafael but the home side remained positive and thought they had made a breakthrough when Suarez went down after Evans appeared to have tripped him in the area.
Referee Halsey thought otherwise, however, and Johnson believes his team-mate is being unfairly treated.
Such is Johnson's disappointment in the officiating from Sunday that he believes had it been Suarez who tumbled in the area, as Valencia did, then the Reds would not have won a penalty.
"I almost guarantee that if you flip it and Luis was the one who I was chasing and it's exactly the same situation with Luis rather than Valencia, then it wouldn't have been a penalty," he said.
"We all know that. Reputations go in front of people at times.
"Maybe because Valencia isn't a known diver maybe that's why he got the decision. I know it's difficult for the referee when players are sprinting as fast as they can but in the big games those decisions are the difference.
"We expect referees to make the right decisions because we are working as hard as we can to win the game. To have it taken away like that, I can't explain it.
"Everyone has to do their job. They have to forget who they are looking at and make the decisions, not let anything from the past influence their decision. They have to call the shots at the time regardless of who it is."

I see when Glen is coming from, but it's a tad rich considering he himself went down easily twice trying to win a penalty in the same match.

Gerrard, too:

"It's down to referees to not judge him. I think even when Luis does get blatant penalties, now he doesn't get them," said captain Gerrard.
Gerrard believes Suarez should have been awarded a penalty against United after colliding with Johnny Evans, adding: "If it's not a penalty, don't give him one but if it's clear give it."

There is a difference between diving and going down easily. Suarez gets called a diver, however he's just a player that goes down easily, Valencia to his credit doesn't usually pull an Ashley Young, however that was a dive on Sunday.

But once again: it shouldn't have ANYTHING to do with how 'easily' or not you go down. The only relevant issue is whether it's a foul or not a foul. Besides, most of this fashion for arguing people go down 'too easily' owes its existence to repetitious slow motion replays. People gaze and gaze at them until they form opinions about intent or the lack of it. Most of it is a myth.

Oh yeah, I agree with that.

My comment is only in relation to what Glen has said.

You're not kidding, and guess who started the whole "diving" witchhunt against Luis in the first place. Of course he does it, but the idea that he's out on his own with it is total, complete, utter, absolute cr@p.

So thats Valencia, Nani, Welbeck and Young. Bit of a pattern there eh Fergie..

They learned from the best. this goes from generation to generation. Ruuds dive got sent Hyypia of. Berbatovs dive won them the game in King Kennys first game. And that list is endless.
