What would you Choose.. ?

If there was only a choice between the two prizes up for grabs, what would you choose, a European Trophy or Champions League Qualification..

Perhaps the question's trying to get at which of those two elements each of us thinks is the more important, in which case my answer is definitely the fact that it gets us into the Champions League. Without that the Europa League would be at best incidental and at worst an outright distraction from what this club *should* be about, which is winning the biggest prizes of all.

I was speaking to my mate last night who genuinely couldn't give a shit about the CL. For him, he just wants to be bouncing round the pub when we win a cup coz we haven't done that for ages. I really loved the simplicity of that, I kinda wish I felt like that. But I don't. I see this as a CL qualification match. Sad innit.

Thanks exactly where I am coming from..

I'm trying to distinguish who sees what as more important..

It's difficult one as this club lives and breathes to win Trophies.. But the bigger prize is Champions League Football, if this club wants to progress under Klopp it is where we need to be..

Yeh, I might take CL qualification over the league cup, but not over any other trophy, trophies make a club, trophies give you memorable nights like last night, you won't see Arsenal fans telling their kids of the game when Sanchez put two past Hull to all but secure a top four finish, but you will see us telling our kids about these games against United, Dortmund, and Villarreal.

The CL is my fave comp. I don't watch all the knockouts in the EL, I haven't even seen Seville's games from this round. I hardly watch any FA cup games at all. But I do watch pretty much every PL and CL game.

Soz like but I really want us to be in it next year.

I only seriously get into in when the knockout stages kickoff unless we are in it.
The group stages are usually predictable and boring.
I know its never going to happen but I would prefer it to go back to an all knock out rounds formula.

Second-tier trophies like the EL do not "make a club". Only league titles and the CL do that, however enjoyable nights like last night may be.

Winning the Europa league and gaining access to the CL should also improve our chances of signing top tier talent (finances permitting).

Klopp + CL Football = Sexy Signings

On a side note, wasn't it 2nd? We played Charlton last game of the season and Fowler did a little over head goal.

3rd...

Only top 3 qualified 1 point behind Arsenal.. pipping Leeds to 3rd..

It was the beginning of the end for Leeds..

Yep, that brace from Cisse in 2006 against West Ham lives on in the memory as such a great Liverpool occasion, after all it secured that magical top four finish. Apparently Gerrard scored a goal in some mickey mouse competition that year, but I can't really remember it because its only some second tier competition.

Your point might carry some weight if qualifying for the champions league meant we won the thing, but the reality is if you're gonna prioritise finishing fourth over winning trophies, you are never going to have the right mentality to win the champions league anyway, you're qualifying just to play the group stage and maybe a knockout game or two.

I'm not trying to say getting into the champions league isn't a great accomplishment, it is, but it's not a success, especially when it comes at the cost of not trying to win silverware, as is implied.

And you qualify for the super cup too. Bank holiday weekend in Monte Carlo.

This years final will be played in Norway. One of the sponsors allready selling tickets for 500+ pounds. Ofte course including some buffet so they can justify the price. Cunts

No, it really isn't. One or two may have suggested that, but most of us who think as I do on this subject haven't. Prioritising the prizes which really mean something does not, repeat NOT mean you don't bother with the others.

It does mean, though, that you set your horizons a lot further ahead than just the next second-class pot which happens to be on offer. Memories are great an' all, but my primary focus is on the future. I want this club back competing regularly at the very top, not just pootling along winning the occasional minor pot here and there, and the way - the only way - to do that is to become regular challengers for the title again.

I think it's more important for us as a club moving forward to be in the champions league than it is to have the cup, we'll be able to attract a better class of player and become more competitive over the coming seasons and increase our revenue. Obviously I'll be greedy though and take both.

Will it be like one of those village hall raffles?

Does the captain of the winning team on the day (i.e. Milner or Henderson) go up to the podium and get to choose between a tall shiny silver trophy or a brown envelope containing a CL Qualification certificate, and then the captain of the losing team gets whichever one isn't picked?

Could be a tricky decision for those two guys. especially if whoever it is has suspicions he may not be at the club to enjoy the CL.

Lucky Arsenal never won in Europe back in the day or Tony Adams woudl have defo picked the 5 liter bottle of Bells.

On the night l, if we win, it's all about the cup. Lifting that trophy, the camera being on us, the players being made up and starting to believe in one another. That shouldn't be underestimated.

After the the night it's fair to say CL qualification and more importantly repeated CL qualification will have a bigger impact on this club. People often mock Arsenal, but their ability to secure top four every year has led to a new stadium, players like Ozil and Sanchez signing from the world's biggest clubs. Yes we can mock them got not winning the league - they should have. But they have been taking steps forward every year. It's surely a large factor in them securing Sanchez when we were in the strongest position with the selling club.

Definitely winning a cup. If we bow out the CL early, it means fuck all. I'm with Woland's mate.

Definitely the cup.

Qualifying for the CL doesn't equate to any long term success, as Arsenal have proved. Winning the league leads to qualifying for the CL and long term success, not the other way around.

It's all about winning cups, and big nights out.

As for Arsenal. Repeated qualification has ultimately meant fuck all, they haven't won the CL and they repeat the same league campaign year on year. Nice stadium and couple of big names yeah, but it hasn't done much in the way of them gracing the history books.

The bolded bit is absolutely spot on, so how can it be "all about winning cups"?

This is exactly the point I was trying to make to @Judge Jules, there seems to be an implied link that qualifying for the champions league leads to success, I don't believe it does, and I think if you become obsessed with it it actually hinders your success, like it certainly did with Arsenal between 2004-2014. Personally I think that qualifying for the champions league is something that happens on your way to being successful, and the best way to become successful is to try and win things and breed a winning mentality into your squad, in no way is finishing in the top four being successful. Ten years ago there was the money argument around this as well which made it more relevant, but we can afford to sign nearly anyone we want these days thanks to the premier league being filthy rich, and if we really wanted a player, only a few would turn us down over champions league football if we offered them the contracts we're easily capable of offering.

Bang on mate. I don't think we'll ever be quite up there with wages and attraction, but it doesn't matter. Richer teams fail too. It's about getting it right.
