You could say 40M is not alot of money in today's context but we could have brought in 2 midfielders, even one would make a difference. Fair question, but the idea wouldn’t have been to just let him go and replace to the benefit of the squad. We may have gone better with more bodies and fresher legs. Let’s not kid ourselves, Mané had periods where he couldn’t beat a man or trap a ball. He wasn’t prime Maradona.

I am not a professional football scout obviously but there are plenty of examples of competent midfielders that costed 40m or less. Odegaard, Guimares etc, fairly recent transfers. What are our scouts for if we are only buying players every other clubs in the world knows of and wants.

All it takes is a good scouting network and a bit of nous. Something it seems we had until fairly recently. We seem perfectly capable of picking up £40m forwards like they're 10 a penny, so I'm pretty sure if we did our homework we'd find a quality midfielder.

If the scouts weren't asked to pick out midfield options there isn't much they can do about that...they don't advocate to management what's needed, we have to assume Klopp is content with our midfield options.

Who knows if its being sold or they're looking for minority investment. Not making the CL, wouldn't that impact the value?
