Pepe's Goodbye Letter

Ta. A reminder that jonny foreigner has different standards to meet.

What a load of absolute shit. Everyone here has said that Pepe is one of the best goalkeepers who's played for us. It's just whoring himself to MANURE and Arsenal, two of our biggest rivals IN ENGLAND, kinda just make people not that fussed that he's leaving. I don't think anyone would have begrudged him a move to Barca (which still may happen).

It's not wrong, or 'different standards,' to say that his form DID slip over the last few years as compared his first few years. It happens - and some posters were saying it would based on his body type etc ...

Napoli have lovely fans btw - much much better than ours. Hopefully he'll be appreciated.

Erm, who scored the greatest goal for England and has over 60 caps. If reins was Richard Reynolds from hull posters here would have very different attitude. Fact.

He was still from Jamaica. Didn't move to England until he was 13.

It's just another day in the Liverpool Family: the uncle with the card tricks, the comedy revolving bow tie and the drink problem goes a bit too far and storms off slamming the front door behind him, as the rest sit around eating twiglets whilst muttering, 'I never liked him' and 'He'll come round' and 'Y'know, according to Aunty Gin, he was adopted'.

What an absolute cunt of a post.
Why? We all the truth can be bitter. We have just heard of an example of one of our living legends whoring himself out at his peak, but no one recalls it. Now another amazing servant of our club is having his reputation sullied by some or not given the respect he his due, and no one thinks that is double standards? If it's any consolation, it's not an lfc problem, but a reflection of our society - see bale and Suarez diving responses.

Finally, I struggle to see how diggers english/British identity is suddenly jettissoned and he is seen only as a Jamaican - what more doesh the man need to do have his English identity accepted?

Well first of all, Barnes did it nearly 20 yrs ago, so that was when most of the hystericals on here were still in nappies AND the press and media coverage was nowhere near as widespread.

Reina is only having his reputation sullied by a minority few and most are saying he was a good keeper but getting past his best. You're being hysterical about this and frankly the link to say if he was English he'd get away with it is just shoddy and not the point. I wonder how Wayne Rooney got treated when he said he wanted out, or Steven Gerrard when he nearly went to Chelsea. Oh fuck, they're not English. They're Scouse....

Oh and think back to the summer of 98 when England had been knocked out of the World Cup after an innocous little kick by Beckham on Simeone of Argentina. The Argentine then play acted to ensure Beckham was sent off and of course England went out on penalties as ever.

The nation then went to find a scapegoat so that it could burn effigies of him and belittle the nasty little Johnny Foreigner because of the differing standards....oh. No they didn't. They burnt and hung effigies of the Englishman.

Barnes, Gerrard or Suarez wanting to leave for greener pastures makes no difference when they have in fact stayed. The latter may yet move but if he doesn't, we'll all be cheering him on when he scores winning goals for us. We'll forgive their cuntish behaviour and get on with it. Pointing fingers and getting into petty arguments to prove your point is moot.

Not sure where we are going here, the point is that all players have their heads turned and some end up leaving and others don't, sometimes not of their own choosing e.g Barnes. My point is that reins, for all he has done, warrants massive respect as a lfc player and his alleged crime is no worst than others. I am saddened by the tone of some in their parting shot against reins, if anything his major crime is being too honest when departing. This suggests that the jonny foreigner exception is alive and well. Finally I am flabbergasted that some would seek to deny diggers english nationality. This issue is probably best dealt with in a separate thread as it could be open to unfortunate misrepresentation.

That is one gay letter. It works once, and only once where Garcia's letter was touching. The next guy to do it just sounds straight up gay.

I have posted evidence to the contrary. Did you even read it? Hanging on to one posters assertion that Digger was from Jamaica to "prove" your point is as flabbergasting.

Thing discussion is getting confused - the digger Jamaica point is another issue, which I am happy to discuss, it's self evident that the guy is a brit, that does not mean he cannot assume another identity.

the digger Marseille point and general lack of full respect and admiration for reina is the jonny foreigner point. Suarez and bale diving is also illustration of this. The jonny foreigner exception is a fact in footie circles, what is debateable is whether it is influencing people's attitude to reina leaving. I think it subconciously is. Apologies for the grammar but I am using a smart phone....

Reina backtracks on Liverpool claims

Angry Reina bids emotional farewell to fans

Pepe Reina has penned an open letter to Liverpool fans angrily claiming he has been forced out of Anfield.Tags: Soccer, Pepe, Reina, Liverpool, Napoli
Pepe Reina has backtracked over his claims that he was unhappy with the way Liverpool handled his loan move to Napoli.
Walsh: Back to reality
Walsh: Rodgers backed into corner
But the goalkeeper is standing by his insistence that the transfer was set up behind his back.
Reina’s season-long switch to Serie A was confirmed last Friday, a month after manager Brendan Rodgers signed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland for £9 million.
In an open letter to supporters, published on his official website on Monday, Reina claimed that Liverpool agreed a loan deal with Napoli without telling him first.
The Spain international wrote that he was "disappointed" with Liverpool’s management and "deserved better".
Reina maintains that Liverpool arranged the move without informing him - something the club have not commented on.
But he has attempted to smooth over the controversy in an interview with a Spanish radio show.
Reina told El Larguero: "I’m not angry with Liverpool - quite the opposite. I am very grateful to them for everything they have given me.
"My departure was different to what I expected, but I will always be grateful to them.
"This is the nature of football - when you are loved by a team, you really feel it, but when you go through bad moments, you are treated differently. In the end I will remember the love I felt from the fans for so many years.
"My time in England is where I have felt truly like a footballer and I have put my name among the best players. I’m very proud to have played almost 400 games with Liverpool.
"I’ll remember the friends I made in and outside the dressing room. Trophies stay in the cabinet gathering dust, but friends are for life."
Reina had been Liverpool’s first-choice keeper since arriving from Villarreal in 2005, but his status had been looking increasingly uncertain.
The 30-year-old’s form has dipped over the last two seasons, and he had been linked repeatedly with a move to Barcelona during the spring and early summer.
Manager Brendan Rodgers indicated last week that his decision to buy Mignolet was prompted by the possibility of Reina leaving for the Nou Camp.
The keeper acknowledged in his letter that he was interested in a move to Barcelona, but insisted that the switch to Napoli - coached by former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez - took him by surprise.
He said: "The signing wasn’t sealed, because you can’t do that without the consent of the player, but it was at an advanced stage and I didn’t know about it.
"Rafael Benitez is the best coach I have had. I don’t know if I’d have joined Napoli without him being there.
"There are many positive things about the city of Napoli and they have a fervent support, like Liverpool’s, but Benitez being there made it much easier for me to sign."

Nope. I found it weird that he was probably the least deserving of a winners medal from that squad, considering he did not feature in any of the important/knockout games. But yet there he was grabbing the microphone and giving it socks in front an entire country. Annoying was the wrong word, it was just sad.

Stu, I love ya but that's bullshit man. It wasn't sad at all. Pepe has been their 'microphone' for the last few tournaments. He has lead the home coming parades and announced the players and has shown to be a huge crowd favourite. He isn't grabbing the mic, he's been given the mic. I think it speaks volume of his character. His team mates are usually hanging on his every word and they are in on the jokes laughing with him as opposed to at him. To call it sad is absurd man.

I've been to Kilkenny All Ireland home coming parades in the city and often the lesser known players are the one's who are given the mic. Usually the 'characters' in the dressing room, the universally liked players. It's not Shefflin telling the jokes up there.

Who should 'grab' the mic in your opinion? If it's sad Pepe does it then why not get Iniesta to do it? Is he charismatic? Is he a good public speaker? What dictates if it's sad or not. On a side note, Pepe played second fiddle to Iker Casillas, one of the best keepers in the game. To call one of our best keepers ever a cheerleader is silly mon frere.

Of course all players have their heads turned, it's how respectful the player is when it happens.

As many have said, if Suarez had come out and been honest, then there wouldn't have been an issue as such, fans would have been upset but there wouldn't be the level of bitterness for what has clearly been a poorly instigated, underhanded method by Suarez to get out the club. I'm not sure what your point is about Barnes, that all players flirt with the possibility? That's missing the point by a margin, Barnes insinuated a few times that he'd like to play abroad, most players have done that at some point, there's a massive difference between that and what Suarez did over his move and more to the point, what Reina did over United and Barcelona. To be writing what's become a traditional send off and then utilise it to cry about being poorly treated, is a bit rich, given he was giving interviews a few years back, offering his services to the team we despise the most. I'm struggling to see why any fan wouldn't "get" the difference.

When did Barnes ever say he'd find it hard to say no to man utd?

Good post Dave. I can see how Pepe Reina fans would disagree.

Just a couple of things by way of a reply.....

I'm talking about Pep the man, not the 'keeper. Between 2006-2010 he'd have been first choice keeper for just about every country bar Spain & Italy maybe. It's not Pepe's fault Iker was around at the same time but thems the breaks.

I'm really only talking about 2008 when he took/was given the mic. The first time they won something with this group. Subsequent MC efforts were to be expected but when I watched the 2008 celebrations I just felt that Pepe was trying to make up for the fact he contributed nothing, playing wise, to the win so he'd make up for it by being the 'character'. I find that sad. Just how I saw it at the time.
