Pepe's Goodbye Letter

Some proper prats in this thread, loyalty and respect are a 2 way thing, he wasn't arsed about telling the club first when he was whoring himself across Europe (and to our bitterest rivals in the press). "Mignolet for sure will be worse", what a load of defeatest crap, no surprise the derision in this thread is from posters who put the boot into Rodgers at every opportunity.

It would be easy to be a cold ass mutha to any Liverpool player who wanted to switch to United.

I'm not glad Pepe's gone, he's been brilliant for us over the years and he's a wonderful keeper, but when you remember his desire to replace Van Der Sar, and this summers desire to join Barcelona, and then couple that with his wish to retire in Spain, Rodgers had every right to ask is now the right time to replace him, and IMO, he's made the correct decision.

Spot on. Not feelin the Pepe love at all.

One of my favorite Liverpool player and among the best signings we ever made.

However totally understand the way the club handled this. It was a very tricky situation and LFC handled it well IMO.

I wish the Vatican would hurry up with your sainthood.

He's been on the slide, not that bothered that he's gone even if he was great for most of his time here.

What I really want to know is what @gene hughes really thinks about Pepe. He hasn't mentioned his feeling before so I demand to know now.

For reals.

If I regularly told my bird I was only shagging her til something better comes along I wouldn't be that shocked to one day find my clothes all over the front garden.

I'm assuming you just don't tell her?

So his agent - the same one Rafa has, didn't keep him updated?
Manuel Garcia Quilon told Tuttonapoli.net: "At this time Napoli is only a possibility. There is interest from both parties.

"The boy would welcome the destination. Napoli is now a great team that continues to grow, playing in the Champions League and a coach like Rafa Benitez who he can count on."
Don't mean to begrudge Pepe. Have great admiration for him and what he has done for the club. Just think whoever has written the letter on his behalf (I don't he wrote it word for word personally), is doing him a great disservice.

I just don't want players in the team who are itching to be somewhere else. We're LFC: not NUFC - thanks Pepe, but we don't want a player who is comfortable - we want one that is hungry. Great service, but life is change. Pointless taking a pop on the way out the door. And taking that sly dig at BR by mentioning RB as the best..

Yes, you're right @Bradley I've held my tongue for long enough.

Reina was a terrific keeper until about three years ago. He hasn't been the same since then, hasn't been really good enough for an ambitious club during that period and I see no evidence to suggest he's going to reach the heights of 2006/2009 again. So from a purely footballing perspective, I am ok with him leaving.

In terms of loyalty and sentiment, he made his bed himself. Firstly, he flirted outrageously with our rivals a few years ago when our decline began and we needed the supposed 'big personalities' and 'big players' to be resolute. None of them came in for him and he was left disappointed at Anfield, allowing his weight, fitness and form to deteriorate. Then more recently, he became aware of Valdez imminent departure and once again his hopes of a move were raised - I expect his slight improvement in condition and form during the second half of this year had nothing to do with that (LOL). Now Barcelona has decided that they don't really fancy him either (and if they ever do it's clearly seen as a stop-gap) and they'd rather have an unhappy and uncommitted Valdez in goal for one more year than take Reina now.

While all of this is going on, while he actively looks for a move to clubs he sees as bigger or more successful than us, he expects us to sit with our thumb up our ass and watch passively. Errr... well no Pepe. The amazing thing for me is that while he's been doing all of this, some of our fans have refused to believe he's anything other than a noble and heroic figure. I clearly remember people on here in complete denial that he was angling for a move to Man Utd or Arsenal even after he'd given an interview and said so! And the bloody recording was posted here so people could hear it!

In my mind all of this, including the letter, just confirms what I've long thought about him. He's just full of himself. He sat down and wrote a letter to us, supposedly to say goodbye but couldn't even avoid making that all about himself, which shows how little class he really has. It could have been a nice touch but he showed once again that he's a bit of a twat by trying to undermine the management.

Good bye Pepe.

99% agree. IMO he's entitled to point out that the deal was done behind his back, but he should have done it briefly in passing.

He makes it sound like he's a slave that has been sold to a new owner without his permission. Clearly we reached agreement with Napoli and then it was Reina's decision whether to go or not. He could have stayed and fought for his place if he'd wanted to. But he didn't fancy it. I think he's just disappointed because his career is winding down and he knows it now.

This is all just a lot of nonsense, isn't it?

Reina's a decent enough bloke, I'm sure, and I believe that he loves the club, but the letter is clearly self-serving and petulant.

The club and Rodgers in particular have plenty of faults, and I wouldn't trust him in the least with all that face rubbing management bilge and luminous teeth, but this sort of thing must go on all the time.

Whatever.

Well, you can't blame the club for moving him on. It was the correct decision.

But you can't blame him for feeling a little sad as well.

He wasn't a saint and the letter was a bit petulant. But all break-ups are a bit unpleasant when feelings involved. It's not like he unleashed a blistering attack on the club. Maybe in a while he'll regret his letter, move on, and think of the whole situation more fondly. We should too.

Indeed he's been a good keeper over the years but that stood out to me too, that he was talking shit about not being informed about the Napoli loan.

Also, for someone who was on a downward slope and had become complacent, it's the epic kick up the arse his career needs, not to mention he'll be working with his old manager and his goalkeeping mentor, so it worked out pretty nicely for him IMO, had we wanted to screw him over we wouldn't have sent him to Napoli.
