Pepe Reina agrees new long-term Anfield deal

Mar 2 2010 by Dominic King, Liverpool Echo
Recommend LIVERPOOL were today given a massive boost after Pepe Reina agreed a new long-term deal – now the club are hoping Javier Mascherano will follow suit.

Rafa Benitez has been desperate to get the future of his influential goalkeeper sorted out and he will be delighted that talks with Reina’s advisors have now reached a successful conclusion.

Signed from Villarreal in the summer of 2005, the Spanish international has been one of Benitez’s biggest success stories and is currently on course to win his fourth ‘Golden Gloves’ – the Premier League award for most clean sheets in a season.

There has never been any suggestion that Reina, 27, was looking to move away from Anfield – on more than one occasion he has reiterated his commitment to the club – but Benitez wanted him to have a deal that recognised his standing.

That is now the case and once Reina returns back to Merseyside following Spain’s friendly with France tomorrow night, the formalities of putting pen-to-paper on the contract that will take him through to the end of 2014/15 campaign.

Despite working under strict financial constraints, Benitez is attempting to safeguard the club’s long-term future and in the past 12 months he has tied up Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Yossi Benayoun and Daniel Agger.

Reina will soon be added to that list and the hope is that Mascherano – who has been a target for Barcelona – will do likewise and agree a contract a new two-year extension to end the speculation that has surrounded him.

Mascherano’s current deal expires in 2012 but Liverpool are hopeful that the terms being offered to Argentina’s captain will finally stave off Barcelona’s interest and keep him on Merseyside.

Benitez has been endeavouring to lay lasting foundations and a clear sign of that came at the weekend when Academy Director Frank McParland and Pep Seguera secured the signing of the highly-rated 15-year-old Raheem Sterling from QPR.

Meanwhile, Daniel Agger is facing a race to be fit for Liverpool’s trip to Lille next week after scans showed he severely bruised a bone in his knee during the 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

Agger left Anfield on crutches and was immediately ruled out of Denmark’s friendly with Austria tomorrow night but fears that he had suffered serious ligament damage were allayed after a scan yesterday.

Excellent news about Pepe - just the quality of player, and the kind of character. we need. If the rumours about Chavski sniffing around were true, this is a pretty comprehensive response by him.

Great. I love Pepe Reina. He is arguably the best in the business, I wouldn't swap him for anyone.

Very good news.

Captain in waiting.

I can see Pepe staying here for the majority of his career only returning for a final swansong with Athletico. His father played for them and he seems to be a fan also.

He HAS to come so that we can roll out our extensive repertoire of "Kjaer in the community" jokes

Pepe is a word class keeper and he is great to have in the team.
He is a very strong presence in the squad, is obviously well liked and has the type of personality that has a positive effect on his teamates.
May he continue winning golden glove awards with us for many many seasons to come.

Superb news. As someone said earlier, he's an excellent candidate for captain in the future.

Fantastic news, we now have £4.21 to spend in the summer.
Which means that Rafa will not waste another 20 millions ;D

I never agreed with Rosco that Riena would suffer a decline over the course of his next contract, but i agree with his assertion that we cannot afford to hand out bumper pay-rises unneccearily.

Questioning every penny spent is a healthy approach to running a football club, and one which is too often ignored.

id rather have £4.21 to spend in the summer and have reina as our keeper than get 15mil or so and give it to benitez to spend it on a keeper that is 1/4 as good as reina and the rest on a squad player like degen or something 😉

Nobody ever agrees with me, but my seemingly outlandish predictions are nearly always spot on. (Robbie Keane, United's looming financial problems, predictions re the Yanks when they took over)

We do need to look closesly at every penny spent, it's this sort of post which is incredibly stupid:

Brilliant news. He's by far the best keeper in the league and will only get better.
This is an example of the conventional wisdom that is too often proved wrong. Not all keepers improve with age.
Reina is a better goalkeeper than most other primarily on account of the explosive step he's got which allows him to make saves (like the one last weekend) that other keepers can't. That sort of explosive power does not last long into a players thirties (without the help of significant pharmaceuticals). You've got to factor in the fact that Reina weighs 92kg as well, it's going to get harder for him to throw that weight around the goal as he ages. And there's a good chance his weight may rise as he gets older, he's got that body type.

As it is, he's 28 and it's a deal that will take him into his early thirties so we may have it just spot on. The last thing we need is to be throwing 95k a week on a keeper who's not as good as we once thought he was. (I'm talking three or four years down the road)

I agreed with you in regards to keane (actually I think I called it first by saying he wont get more than 10 league goals)

as for pepe, what do you suggest ross, let him run his contract down? frankly every half decent player we have should get long contracts if for no other reason the debacles of owen and macmoneyman are never allowed to happen again.
