If we had to make a permanent appointment tomorrow I'd prefer Pellegrini to Rijkaard.

But we don't, and shouldn't.
But Pellegrini is a good coach and after having a good look around in the summer he should still be one of the top picks.
So if we can get him now, why don't we? He'll have the rest of the season to work with the team, find who he wants to keep and who to go. New players in January then again in the summer.
Show me his trophy cabinet. In any case, "good" isn't enough. I want the best for this club. Accepting "good" got us Roy Hodgson, who was Manager of the Year last season.

And there's no way we can or should make any assumption about whether Pellegrini would be on the list by next summer. I'm not talking about having a look around *in* the summer either, I'm talking about doing so between now and next summer, so we can do a proper number on it and see who would welcome an approach even if they're already employed.
His trophies are in South America.
Hmm
Mourinho = Great, other top managers = Good. Hodgson was never good in my books.
I don't believe we can get Mourinho. Pellegrini is just as worthy as any other possible target out there as far as I'm concerned.

I'm underwhelmed by both to be honest.

Pellegrini did well at Villareal without actually winning anything during his five years at the club, and then took Real to their highest ever points total (abeit second in the league) last season with the likes of Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema already blessing a fantastic squad. It's very easy to continue winning with a winning team, but nothing in his CV shouts out as exceptional.

No trophies of note over a twenty year managerial career (remind anyone of another manager) and no proven experience in a non Spanish speaking league in bringing a team which is punching below it's weight to the very top.

Rijkaard has failed at a few 'lesser' jobs in semi competitive leagues, and has been unable to promote these top teams in their respective leagues to their former glory. Whilst he bought Deco, Guily, Eto'o et al, the best players for that team (as is still the case) are Iniesta and Xavi which are possibly the best midfielders in the world. Saying that those two wouldn't have come though without Rijkaard is like saying Gerrard and Carragher wouldn't have made it in without Ged.

He didn't leave Barca a winning team (two years without anything) and Gala are doing badly so I wonder where the fawning comes from.

Both, at the moment, are a meh to me.

i definitely prefer pellegrini to rijkaard, and i was breifly excited back in june when it looked like he might come instead of hodgson, but i'm not going to pretend he's a really exciting possibility like rafa benitez or mourinho were in 2004. still, i'm going a bit cold on the idea of getting kenny in as a caretaker while we conduct a thorough search, because i'm not really sure why it's any better than bringing in someone like pellegrini who at least *might* be the long-term answer, especially if he speaks english. get him in on a shortish contract (say to end of next season), see how he does, and you can be conducting this exhaustive search at the same time in case he doesn't work out.

i'm not sure how having kenny as caretaker for a couple of months would be much of an improvement on that, tbh. i think it made sense before we were sold and would be really struggling to get a decent manager in quickly, but not so much now.

Don't call me a prick, Moderator. Post reported.

Do you want me to apologize?

Not sure if this is just a rerun of when the Board were looking at applicants for Rafa's vacant post. We'll see what happens. Anyone bar Roy will do. However, I would still like King Kenny to take temporary charge because we need to get the next long-term appointment right.

Agree with this.

Replacing Rafa with Roy has been disastrous, but understandable given our management and financial situation at that time of great uncertainty.

Cant and musnt get it wrong again.

I'm not sold on Pellegrini. Partly for the reasons Ian mentions. Partly because the few times I saw Real play under him, they looked utterly disorganised and devoid of ideas.

Pellegrini was the obvious choice at the start of the season. Got madrid to their best ever score in la liga and has managed high profile players. Somehow we got stuck with Hodgson who i didnt mind, but if we get Pellegrini, i think we would be back on track. New Owners, New Coach

Id be happy with Klinsmann, Martinez or Di Matteo....

All can speak English and have a history of playing good football and developing a excellent team spirit and morale within the squad.

Former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that he never had a say in how los Merengues played during his season-long reign at the Bernabeu and stated that he did not speak to club president Florentino Perez once since last August.

While he had little say in their style of play, Pellegrini was adamant that it was he who picked the team.

"The coach never had a voice to say how we needed to play but I played who I felt had to play and wasn't under pressure to pick who they [the board] wanted," he said as quoted by AS, before noting that he never knew the club president but will shake his hand if he does meet him again.
"It was he [Perez] who brought me to Madrid. I could not do what he wanted, but it was very difficult to maintain a relationship. It was a difficult season.

"I have not talked to him since August. I would have liked to have known him better as president and him known me as a coach, I don't know him either as an individual or as president. I leave an important job done but the president has every right in the world to change the coaching direction of the club."

"I do not know him either as individual or as president. I don't have anything good or bad to say about him. When I see the president I will take his hand and say that for me I am proud to have been coach of Real Madrid and I think now I leave having done an important job."

The sacked Chilean also declared that he was never consulted about the sale of Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben, departures he lamented as mistakes on the part of the club.

"I wanted Sneijder and Robben to stay but I never had a conversation at Real Madrid about who I preferred, if it was Cristiano or Kaka and Sneijder and Robben," he added.

"He decided to sell [Robben and Sneijder], and I think that was wrong. I never had a confrontation with the president. The coach should have had a more important voice in what the team needs. At that point I felt small."

The Chilean fired a sarcastic parting shot at his former employers stating that had the club played in his way perhaps they would have won all their home games and scored more goals.
"Who knows, if the team played with wingers maybe we would have won 19 games in the Bernabeu and scored 120 goals," he noted.

No, not necessarily.

But Pellegrini isn't exactly a spring chicken anymore as he's almost 60. Moreover he hasn't won anything yet.

So why should he be our manager? Do tell.

He got qualified Villarreal for the first time in their history by finishing 3rd in his first season. The following season he took them to within a missed penalty of the CL final.

His teams were well organized, played very good football and through a very good scouting network, coaching system and clear sporting direction, they over-achieved for a club of their size.

This earned him a chance at the Real Madrid job and he achieved their all-time record points total in La Liga, the 2nd highest total in La Liga history, despite being consistently undermined within the club and by the 'impartial' press.

He's not a 'name' manager and he's not won anything in Europe (although in any other season, he'd have won the title with Real), but he's done well in his career.

I suppose you could draw some obvious parallels to Roy Hodgson's career, but in my humble opinion he's a better manager.

Pellegrini is top of my wanted list.
Is this a "wanted and currently out of a job" list?

Because that's a fucking short list, with him and FR on it.

I would've preferred Pelligrini in the summer. I'm not so sure about getting him in now though. Ditto Rijkaard.

Definitely taking the "hmmmmm" stance on this one.
