A flurry of bets has seen ourselves installed as favourites to sign him (apparently)

Should we consider him as an option... ?

Finally!

One of those out of the blue transfers we've all been dreaming about

He has only been a bit part player for Barcelona.. so it is hard to gauge how good he is...

Although his stats show he played a decent amount of games in la liga last season.. many of them where as a Substitute appearance..

34 games with a total of 1439 minutes played.. in La Liga last season... Which is about 16 full games.. He actually started 15 games last season..

6 Goals & 6 assists to his name in the league

He also scored 5 goals in 15 appearances elsewhere last season, 7 of those games he started.

Strange if true that we are trying to get Pedro or Benteke as their hardly similar type players. Maybe their thinking that Pedro would be ideal back up for sturridge as he plays on the shoulder of defenders though he's not really a centre forward.

The thing that concerns me about Pedro is that I don't know whether he has enough about him to be the star in a lesser team. That and the fact that he's quite a streaky player.

He is known as the Warrior amongst Barca Fans..

FC Barcelona forward Pedro Rodriguez has said on Tuesday that it's "obvious" that he is in a "delicate situation" at the Blaugrana, adding that when pre-season begins he will evaluate things with the club "to see what is the best for everyone."

Pedro, who is is currently on his final few days off before returning to Barcelona, said that despite his new contract, things aren't ideal at Barça because his prominence in the team has fallen during Luis Enrique's spell as boss.

The Spain international does not know where his future will be, although he did say he is happy at the Catalan club, the club of his life and the club where he has been able to achieve "so many things" wearing the blaugrana shirt.

He commented that he only wants to "think about resting and enjoying the final few days of my time off." Therefore, when training begins again next week, there could be more news on his future.

With regards to the signing of Arda Turan, who joined Barça for 34 million euros from Atletico Madrid on Monday evening, 'Pedrito' opined that he is a player "with a lot of quality" and added that he will "bring many things to the team," as he did at Atletico.

Apparently according to ESPN.. Barca will accept in region of 20 million Euros for him..

We don't necessarily need him to be a star though. If he can provide a high-quality alternative to Sturridge, and score about 12-14 a season, that'll be well worth getting. What would he cost? About 10m?

I think that'd be a more worthwhile investment than Benteke. It'd keep intact our style of play, and considering he's a much older player, it wouldn't hinder the long-term development of Origi and Ings either.

Dmish said it best - I'd rather we spend 10-15 million on him, than 32.5 million on Benteke.

That being said, he's been linked to us the last x windows and I don't really think he's going to leave barca.

So that's about 14m GBP. We should be able to a deal for about 12m.

I'd do it. Sometimes, when the right player is not in the market for you to splurge 30+ million, it's a better idea to spend a lower amount on a more reliable player rather than spunking 30 million on the wrong player.

It's similar to the Podolski and Negredo signings. Both signed at the age of 27 - Podolski for 12 million, he scored 31 goals in 2 seasons. Negredo signed for 16 million, he hit 26 goals in his one season at City.

You get good value for money, and it doesn't disrupt the team. Most importantly, it saves you from squandering a huge sum on a failure.

It is very clear that this isn't a great market for elite strikers. The best way around that situation is exactly a player like Pedro who provides a reasonably high-quality supplement to your attack whilst helping you retain your ability to throw big cash at a player 18 months down the line, when the striker market is better.

He said it this week.. Today in fact..
According to Sport.
The catalan tabloid.
In other words the metro in a different language.
Can't see Barcelona selling any of their top stars until the transfer embargo is over.

They have just signed two players under the embargo.. so anything is possible...

Will it happen.. ?? probably not..

His goalscoring record isn't particularly great though I wonder how he looks goals to minutes, given he's quite often a sub.

Anybody capable of providing such a stat?

He's bang average, I'd rather not. On par with Bojan and Tello. He'd probably suit our style of play more than Benteke, but his finishing is pretty bad.

He averaged the equivilant of 1 goal every 2.5 games last season in all competitions

38 Shots last season in the league.. 6 Goals..

Now, this link, I'm pretty excited about. If you look at just the cold hard data on his ability to finish with his feet in the box over these last few years, his numbers are consistently good, bar one season. In the tables below, you can see how he compares to our guys (and Benteke). These numbers are basically the shots and goals in the box per season, with headed attempts / goals and penalty attempts / goals taken out. The % figure indicates the efficiency, i.e. the percentage of (feet) shots in the box which result in goals (box = both 6- and 18-yard).

Of course, you could argue that playing at Barca means he gets better opportunities to score. Still, unless the goals he scored were open goal tap-ins most of the time, he still had to beat (at least) the keeper. Also, because of the low playing time, the position he plays, and the players he plays with, the number of shots he takes in the box each game are about up to half the number that some of the big name main strikers attempt (e.g. Aguero, Benzema, Higuain, etc.). The lower base helps his numbers, but if you compare them to Sturridge's number of attempts, they aren't that far off. In terms of the scoring rate, his numbers are actually very good relative to those big names.

I could probably expand more on this in another reply but I need to get some sleep. Maybe more tomorrow if I can get the time / energy and if folks are interested about the details of the data I've pulled and the analysis (source: whoscored). 🙂

the season before.. 2013/14

37 Games 15 Goals 8 Assists 70 Shots.. in the league

Minutes played 2361

1 goal every 157 minutes..

Edit: In all competitions 3,323 minutes played.. 19 goals scored

1 goal every 174 minutes..

He scored 11 in 50 in all competitions last season. So about 1 in 5.

In terms of minutes on the pitch.. it was actually the equivalent of 2.5 games per goal..

Edit: In fact it was less than 2.5

Total minutes played

2198, that 200 minutes per goal...

On a par with Bojan and Tello?
He has 204 appearances for Barcelona scoring 50 odd times and 51 appearances for Spain with 16 goals too.
Oh and two World cup winner medals along with 3 champions league medals.
Yeah on a par with Bojan and Tello alright.

I'm sure these days people judge players by the numbers and don't watch them with their eyes.
Pedro is fucking ace, and Benteke is fucking rubbish, apparently.
This is just like all the scum fans becoming serie A experts and knowing darmian is absolute class based on all the torino games they watch.

So over the last 2 season he has averaged 1 goal every 184 minutes of play in all competitions

So 1 goal in 2 games..

That is not bad at all... He has a decent assist ratio too..

For around 20 million Euro.. decent buy...

Better than Benteke anyway...
