Imagine Skrtel in his prime and this Chap in central defence..

We would have the opposition shiting themselves just at the mere look of them, even before they have kicked a ball.

LIVERPOOL appear on the verge of signing Greek defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos. Reports in Greece suggest that the Anfield club have already agreed a fee with Schalke for the player and a move has only been delayed by the player's recovery from a serious knee injury.

Papadopoulos has been a long-term target for Liverpool, with the player present at the club's match against Fulham at the end of last season, and there are even rumours that a £13m fee may have been agreed for some time.

Greek newspaper Sport Day are reporting that Liverpool could be set to announce the move when they arrive back from their pre-season trip to Thailand.

Papadopoulos has reportedly advised Liverpool that he is now sufficiently fit to undergo a medical and hopes to travel to England for that purpose on August 10.

Liverpool medics are thought to be particularly keen to ensure there are no lasting effects from the injury before finalising a deal and reports suggest that Papadopoulos will by subject to an especially strenuous medical. The 21-year-old Greek international played only ten times for Schalke in the Bundesliga last season.

As a tough, uncompromising defender who is strong in the air, Papadopoulos is regarded as the perfect replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher but the player's arrival could also be a boon for the club with Martin Skrtel linked to Napoli and rumours of Barcelona's interest in Daniel Agger also refusing to go away.

Ben Smith said we havent agreed a fee. Nothing else.
The Echo has confirmed the interest today.

We're apparantly looking at a loan first with a 13 mill fee because of the injury.
I'd pay 13 mill for him in a heartbet.

What? Played 10 times last season?

Jeez, I assumed the injury was a fairly recent one which almost certainly wouldn't be a problem but might just, so we were erring on the cautious side.

This sounds a lot worse than that...

His injury is a big worry, but I guess these are the kind of gambles we have to take in order to secure top quality targets.

Not sure about that. Gambles on form and quality are one thing, and I agree that in our position we have to take some of those, but almost all transfers represent a gamble to some extent anyway. Gambles on known injuries are another matter and I'd need some persuading to take them. If this move *does* go ahead, our medical team had better have got it right.

Getting him initially on a loan might help negate some of the risk

I wouldn't worry about the injury - It'll be like the recoveries of Lucas and Skrtel, he'll come back but it'll take him a year to get back to top form.

It's a tricky decision - buy him now and risk him being sub par for a year .... he gets rubbished by fans and media alike and Rodgers doesn't look so clever. But the payoff from the move could be huge in the long run.

If we wait til January does his price drop ?

Schalke manager saying no bids received for the lad - and reiterates 20m euro release clause.

I think you've hit the nail on the end - if we're really interested, then taking him now is worth the risk.

Genuine questions - how many games has he missed last two seasons cos of injury and when was the last time a foreign defender was an immediate success in the epl after being signed at the age or 21ish? Binny?

Depends on peoples views but I would say Natsasic has been a success at City.

Maybe it's just me, but it certainly feels like more purchased defenders slot in without issue than otherwise. There might be some minor growing pains, but the majority at least become decent defenders given a season, and a surprising number of touted ones become key players.

You think of keepers, midfielders, attackers failing to settle in and you come up with significantly more examples than defenders, especially central defenders.
