We're going to have to buy a lot of midfielders pretty sharpish though, if we do sell Lucas and Mascherano. I know Gerrard and even Aquilani can play there, as can Shelvey, but none of them are DMs.

Bigger picture Bunny........................ £7m for Lucas!? Please, please, please, please...............

*crosses everything*
Gerrard can play that role.

Gerrard - Aquilani
-------Cole--------

This should be the formation in the centre of the park if we want to play all of our most talented players... like many i have concerns regarding Aquilani's defensive ability..

This just makes me hate the Poulsen transfer even more.... If Mascherano is truely going... then why dont we spent more on a much better player??

Lucas is happy being a team player.. I bet you Poulsen will be a complete dick if he doesnt get to start regularly..

Id rather a smaller squad where we rely on Youth as 3rd and 4th choice squad players.. Get rid of Lucas and Mascherano and combine their fees to sign a fucking whopper midfielder.

I think Lucas is a decent lad and a limited footballer. I also think his limitations will be exposed more in Roy's midfield where he's not going to be able to keep up with the quick football brains of Cole, Aquilani and his captaincy deputy.

Indeed. I asked Fox to cross a busy road. While blindfolded.

I don't think you need to ask Fox to do stupid things. He does them voluntarily. He must be indestructible, though, otherwise he'd surely be dead by now.

This.

We can't offload, Lucas and Mascherano and not have replacements lined up. Or we will be left with Jay Spearing as potential holding midfielder, which might be ok against last night's shite but not in the prem.

Lucas is not the standard we need in midfield, hence we can offload him. No problems there. And I would assume that the obviously weakness in the squad if we sell all midfielders, or goalies for that sake, is taken care of by the manager and his scouts.

The season starts next Sunday. The transfer window shuts in 3 weeks odd (which is enough time) so, if we do sell Lucas and Mascherano we must have credible replacements. I know little about Poulsen, but people whos' opinion I respect say he's shite.

If we offload then we need to have better replacements not the same old average Joe's. Lucas may not be LFC standard but he does at least have premiership experience and has youth on his side. I'm not suggesting he is Zidane or Gerrard, just that we need to ensure we don't start a long campaign with Gerrard and Aquilani as the only credible CM's for the prem. Surely anyone can see the issues we'd have there? Injuries for starters!

I think we pay Roy Hodgson about 2 mill punds a year, as well as a huge outlay on scouts. The least I would expect for that kind of money is a list of players to recruit if things happens. It is not like Hodgson wakes up one day, and sell Lucas and next day he start to search for replacement...

And Gerrard, Aquilani, Mascherano, Joe Cole can all play CM in various formations against Arsenal and get away with it just fine.

Considering that he has as good as admitted that Mascherano is leaving and has turned down, an albeit derisory bid, from Palermo for Lucas that could suggest that he's not about to sell 2 CM's.

As for the 4 you mention, that's all well and good for game one, but what about the other 37 games? A CM triumvirate of Cole, Aquilani and Gerrard for a 70 game season with back ups of Poulsen (apparently) and Spearing makes me nervous. As I've said we have 3 weeks to find replacements, but so far, none of the names mentioned that are realistic make me think that we can improve our depth in this area.

Oh and we paid Benitez and his many scouts a wage for many a year and look where that got us last season.

Thats were you end up playing Lucas in midfield. I think you should be more nervous if we didnt offload him 😉

Ha! I'm not in either the Lucas is a "cunt" or Lucas is our saviour camps. For me, the truth is somewhere in between. He's become the stand out, "have a go at" player which has in fact caused his canonisation by some equally myopic people. All imho of course.

You must have missed my frustration towards Benitez when he was here. Perhaps because it wasn't in every single post I made. 😛

To be honest, he's not an outrageously bad footballer. I think he's probably a better footballer than Insua, for example. In fact, I think there have been several other worse footballers who've played for us, but I don't think they've played as regularly in as important a position.

He's a likeable enough person and I would be very happy for him if he could find his level somewhere else. It's clearly not at Liverpool. Until he's here though, it's hard to desist from 'calling him a cunt'.

Palermo sporting director Walter Sabatini believes there is still a chance the club could capture Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.

The Serie A outfit confirmed earlier this month they had made a bid for the Brazilian, but denied it was as high as €6million (£4.99m).

Sabatini says the two clubs are still talking and believes a deal could be done if the Italian club can up its bid.

He told Mediagol.it: "Is there a dialogue with Liverpool for Lucas Leiva?
"Yes, there is still a dialogue even if it is a marginal dialogue. Do Liverpool say he is unsellable - I believe that there is room for flexibility.

"How much would he cost? They evaluate him at €10million (£8.31m) but with €6-7 million I think maybe that the deal could be closed if the club would be willing to invest that figure."

He added to Live Sicilia: "Lucas? It is a remote possibility, we must try to be patient."

It sounds as though Lucas has been made available by the sounds of that unless the Palermo director is talking out of ass (which is of course entirely possible). I do think we should be asking for more than €6M if we do sell him though.

This is an interesting one.

If the offer is a derisory one, then I'd say no..I also think Roy might try to play Lucas in a more attacking role; which he seemed to do yesterday (granted, against shite opposition)

But it we could get 7-8 million, please sell.

I like the valuation of Lucas. He's what 23 years old?
Brasilian international playing for one the top clubs in Europe.
£3 Million is an insult.

£10 Million is better.

I mean Villa want £30 Million for Ashley Young and Milner.

if we end up with poulsen coming and lucas leaving and not be out of pocket that would be a result.
It would look that way on paper...

however Lucas is clearly an honest hard worker that knows he is a squad player.... He will give everything in training to try and convince Roy to play him - Pushing the other midfielders to pick up their game..

I can imagine Poulsen spitting the dummy if he doesnt start regularly... He will also kick the shit out of people in training. Probably the last thing our brittle Injury prone stars need..

This is all based on my belief that once Mascherano leaves another 1st team regular will be signed.

Neither are good enough for lfc. I saw Halewoods finest Steve McMahon in Thailand the other day. He would be the perfect player that we need now. I just don't think Lucas or Poulsen are at that level.
