Palace post-match

I'm genuinely at a loss to explain how we keep winning game after game after game without almost ever dominating or playing at our best. This time it was Palace's goal contentiously disallowed by VAR, a couple of good chances missed by them and us scoring with a mis-hit shot that bounced in after 2 deflections and off both posts and an even scrappier winning goal.

I remember my own sense of sheer annoyance at various Chelsea teams over the years stringing together fluky 1:0 or 2:1 wins with deflected goals, contentious penalties and the like often being the difference – or Fergie's United always seeming to conjure up a late winning goal even after playing like absolute crap for 85 minutes – and I can understand other fans' annoyance at our own recent run of results. We haven't kept a clean sheet in 10 games and haven't scored more than 3 in the league since the opening day – yet this objectively indifferent run of performances has resulted in a historically great run of results. Why?

There is a very good reason to your question, and it is the answer to why we can play so badly and yet win games. I think it all comes down to VVD as the single player that has transformed our back-line, he has the skills that match the leadership qualities he has - a complete defender if there ever was one. He organizes that defense so well that we can get away with losing control of the midfield, before we signed him I cannot remember a single defender we have had (in non-title winning era) other than Sami who has had command of the defense, but Sami lacked the pace and athleticism despite having the leadership qualities. You can argue all you like about the quality front three, but we have had world-class quality front men in abundance for the last 30 years - these three are not the first.

Also, luck has a lot to do with it, you cannot escape this, but I like to think that Klopp deserves it after having such bad luck in finals over the years, and even that last season at Dortmund - he seemed cursed with bad luck. That chance that was missed by Zaha today - after seeing it now on MOTD, all I can say is - that was luck or it was a case of great tactical know-how by our team because it fell to a player that is incapable of scoring from a chance like that. Take your pick.

All this fume and that we are lucky debate. In all most the games that people are saying that we are lucky we have dominated possession and had the most shots on target. It would be more apt to use the word 'lucky' is a team is under the cosh and getting battered and then somehow has a freak attack and scores subsequently winning the game, anyways enough ranting Id better get back to work here at Stockley Park, Atkinson trying to steal my cocaine again, I hate it when he does that!

They had more shots on and off target today. We scored with our first effort on target and their keeper pushed in off the woodwork.

We were definitely lucky today.

The most concerning aspect is the lack of clean sheets, I expected we would see a return to normality when Alison came back from injury but we are still giving up tons of easy chances.

That said we are soon approaching the point where City, and they are still the main threat, would need to play a perfect season to beat us. We will inevitably have a couple of tough games and drop points but Id fully expect Leicester and Chelsea will drop more points than us over the next 25 games. City are the only team thay could win 22 or 23 out of the reamining 25, but that still may not be enough. They are walking a tightrope now and the pressure on them will be enormous.

We have a tougher schedule in the second half of the season. Leicester, Man C, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton all away.
We're still involved in all cup competitions. We need to be really lucky with injuries or sign someone.
Also last time people underestimated Leicester they won the shit.
The last time Leicester won it they were top by Xmas .. not 8 points behind the European Champions FFS.

And you include Arsenal and Everton in that list ? 😀

Arsenal can strengthen in January or they might sack Emery.
Everton took points from us last season.
We lead the league last season too btw, look how that went.

Chased down by City with the most expensive squad in history .. not Leicester, that's beyond comparison. And both Arsenal and Everton are miles off last season, as if a new player or two in January would change anything. The only thing I wouldn't want is a new manager for one of them just before we play them .. new manager bounce and all.

Agree with @Modo that we have it harder in the second half of the season.

I did think the power of Anfield played a part in our games against Leicester, Spurs, and City tbh (and we know Arsenal is scared shit of Anfield). They will be a different proposition away.

Hopefully the fixture congestion eases out and Ox, Matip, Shaq and Keita find some form

The most concerning thing is the number of times we’ve led at Xmas/Boxing Day and then not gone on to win the title. We need to break that hoodoo.

I'll be a lot calmer if we manage to extend the gap to at least 10 points by January. Leicester and Man C play each other in a few weeks.

I was going to start looking in to it. Then kids started kicking off so didn’t.

Out of how many of our 18 league titles were we leading at Christmas?
I'd actually like to know the answer to this.

If I were to guess, I'd say 12. I know we definitely chased down a title having been almost bottom around Christmas, but can't remember what year it was.

But Woland, why did you copy and paste all of that stupid shit into our lovely topic?

Because that was what was posted in just one topic (there are five active about us and / or corruption in the game on the fume right now) WHILE CITY WERE PLAYING CHELSEA.

They were more arsed about this than their own fucking match.

Let them fume, if we win it they might go back to supporting whoever they used to support 10 years ago.

Definitely early 1980's, I've seen Souness refer to it lately. Think we were 13th at Christmas and smashed it.... 1981-82 it was.

We’ve never had a lead with this.
Well, maybe we will do it, i mean do you all remember the November voodo shit ?Maybe at the 4th time of asking we can do it. No doubt someone will come up with some shit about being in front in April and never losing it, but somehow we do lose it.

Am I the only one that came here hoping there'd be some ratings from MWNN or whoever?

I don't like keeping you all waiting to0 long for the WAAAAAAATINGS!!!! So here they are!
Admittedly, these are cobbled together from watching a crappy stream on Twitter, MOTD and then extended highlights, so apologies if I'm not quite as spot on as usual.

An away win to a side we often find a bit tricky was very satisfying, although as many of us thought it might be, it was a tough afternoon. Palace played pretty well, and we lacked composure and quality; we didn't even get a shot on target in the first half, with VAR coming to our rescue to ensure it stayed 0-0. Horrible stuff. Nothing like ewtowpia.

We created far more in the second half and - who else? - Mane scored again, but we then allowed Zaha to score (his first of the season, standard) and suffered a dreadfully nervous last 5 minutes, desperately hanging on to Firmino's winner. Still, to paraphrase Jeff Goldblum, Liverpool always seem to find a way. But we need to keep more clean sheets, and stop needing these last minute goals, because sooner or later, we're going to need one and it wont't happen; we can't fucking scrap and fight our way to the title in every single game.

Alisson (7) One very good stop from Townsend, not much he could have done with the goal. Not massively busy, but faced more shots and crosses than he would have wanted.

TAA (5) Dreadful first half, and was given the heebie-jeebies at times by Zaha, leading to some awful passing (one brainless cross-field effort was almost ruinous). Got better after half-time, which wasn't exactly hard, like.

Lovren (7) I like games when you don't really notice defenders, and Lovren got on with it well. Showed some decent vision and quality with the ball too.

Virgil (8) Formed a strong partnership and was typically dominant in the air and on the deck, and is one of those rare players who can make everyone else play better by simply being there. We'd be a far worse team without this Red Colossus manning the ramparts.

Robertson (6) Kept busy defensively and couldn't get forward as much as he usually does, and he lacked a bit of his usual zip and confidence. He was solid enough and he did assist for Mane's lucky strike, but he can play much better.

Fabinho (6) Kept very busy by Palace, and spent a lot of time plugging gaps in the midfield, and shuttling left and right to help out the full-backs. Couldn't find the time or space for much offensive work, bar one or two cute passes.

Henderson (6) Similar story really; worked very hard, but we always seemed to be playing catch-up, and reacting to situations, which meant our midfield spent a lot of time scurrying about and trying (and failing) to get on top of the midfield. One lovely pass deserved a better finish, but that was about the best moment really.

Wijnaldum (4) Classic SHG first half, in which he simply did not get involved at ALL and allowed things to happen, rather than making things happen. It was as bad a performance as I've seen for ages; a somnambulant, ineffectual shithouse. Like most though, he perked up in the second 45 minutes and started moving the ball better and was far more involved, but it still lacked quality.

Chamberlain (5) Flashes of effort, but often lacks subtlety and cleverness in and out of possession, especially when he's played in a position that doesn't suit him. Improved when he moved to the right, but didn't do enough to threaten Palace.

Mane (8) Oh how we all love Sadio. Should have done better with a splendid pass from Henderson, but he doesn't usually miss twice. Albeit his actual goal was a jammy, scuffed mis-hit. He was our most dangerous player by a mile. As usual.

Firmino (6). Could have shared a double bed with Wijnaldum, such was his lack of influence in the first half. He always puts a shift in, but his passing was hit and miss, and he was typically lacking in genuine goal threat, dropping too deep, too often. Had one great chance which was well saved, but then finally, dramatically ended his seemingly endless goal drought and scored a goal in the league! AN ACTUAL LEAGUE GOAL! And how vital it was too.

I think the reason we're having trouble beating teams convincingly lately is because all of our opponents are fired up for the game. They just seem more up for it than if they play a team closer to their level.
Palace looked like a quality side against us and deserved to get a point.

The fact that PL teams are extremelly wealthy compared to other teams make them capable of assembling some quite good squads. We are not the only "Top 6" team unable to beat teams convisingly week in and week out. I think we start to see a trend where supporters take first and foremost the result but also performances for granted. Us crafting out win after win at difficult PL stadiums should be a joy to watch.
