Our defence

is, so far this season, worse than our defence under Roy Evans:

Rafa Benitez's side have conceded 20 goals from their 13 games this season, only in 1992-93 have they had a worse record (21 goals).

I used to have nightmares about David James, Phil Babb et al, so that's really saying something.

Or Babb trying to clear a ball of his own line, but instead getting his legs wrapped around the post and smashing his family jewels in the process...

I quite liked John Scales though.

I think we have conceded more goals from set-pieces than any other team

Scandalous
Yeh we have, but still nothing been done to change our system. Adebayor's goal last week summed our defending up in 1 last week from set pieces. The tallest man on the pitch allowed a free header 8 yards out!

A few months ago once we took the lead in a game I used to be always confident we would win the game such was the quality of our defending. Now I have no belief or confidence we can see a game out. We took the lead twice against Lyon and ended up with 1 point from the 2 games, our last 2 games in the prem which have been at home (Birmingham and City), we took a 1-0 lead, then were left chasing the game to scrape a 2-2 draw after going 2-1 down. Even against Debreceni, as bad as they were, I was never confident we could see that game out at 1-0, and in the end we were lucky their centre forward was so bad at finishing.

The thing I wonder is, how has it got so bad so quickly? Carra showed he is still capable of performing to a high standard against United. Why was he so good in that game, and why has he been so poor in most other games! Is it due to our full backs as they are a lot more attacking than usual? Maybe, but games Johnson has been injured and Carra has filled in at full back we've still been poor. Insua though is definitely a weak link. For someone so young, he is very slow. He's not best in the tackle either.

Whatever the problem is, something needs to change and improve quickly. Any team builds their foundation for success on their defence. United didn't win the league last season because they were the best in attack, they won it because they kept 13 (I think) clean sheets in a row. If we can start keeping clean sheets again, 2 goals in a home game like we scored in our last 2, should be enough for 3 points!

John Scales was a very good player, big, strong, fast as fuck and a great left foot, he should have left Wimbledon years sooner

Shame injuries wrecked his Liverpool career

Magic's taking some blame because he is far more adventurous than Arbeloa, but the form of Carra and Skittles has been the bigger problem

Plus Insewer really is fucking rubbish, so we need a new LB

Amongst many other things

I've studied these threads carefully over the past few weeks, and I've come to this conclusion: since he left, Sami has gotten younger, faster and sharper. He may even have grown a bit, too. So, even though he wasn't a first choice player last year, he should be one now. Get him back, pronto!

Its too unsettled, isn't it? Carra's virtually the mainstay. Skrtel and Agger were in and out. Johnson was troubled by injuries and Insua probably wouldn't have started as many games if we had Aurelio fit. Fact is we have trouble scoring too, with Torres and Gerrard out.

Or if Rafa had spent his money a little bette raher than buying someone as shit as Dossena! That's the real killer for me when I look at left back.

It's OK though, because we have Lucarse to 'control the game'
Ha! And so much so, for having 2 DMs 'screening' the midfield and 'protecting' the defence.

I will never forget Jamo jumping up for a cross in one game at Anfield WITH HIS ARMS DOWN
Yeah, he's turned into a good goalkeeper but he was a disaster for us. Given that we now have possibly the best keeper in the world and the second most expensive RB in Europe, it is a bit baffling that we're suddenly so weak defensively.

James is the most blessed type of keeper; he's fucking huge and has astonishing reflexes and athleticism

But his kicking is shit and he is still prone to all too frequent wtf moments

So did Kirkland, who possessed the rare ability to actually miss the ball when it was in front of him.

Kirkland's built like a string of piss, is made of glass, and isn't quick or athletic

He's fucking shit, really

I remember watching him for the reserves aeons ago, and seeing how long it took him to fall to ground to block a shot was astonishing. I could have jogged from one end to the other in that time.

He's deffo the keeper in my most hated Liverpool side of the last 10 years

Kirkland

Josemi
Pellegrino
Traore
Insua

Nunez
Lucas
Diao
Zenden

Morientes
Diouf

Obviously Shitandje is worse and a massive, massive cunt but I don't recall him playing many games

That's a fucking awful team, without a doubt, but Insua shouldn't be in there. He's struggled this season, but he's only 20 and had quite a few good games for us last season.

I would put Djimi at LB, where he generally played, and Igor Biscan at CB, where he played several times (disastrously) under Houllier.

Maybe Gonzalez for Zenden too: not that Zenden was any better, but at least none of us expected him to be any good; Gonzalez was hyped up as the next Cristiano Ronaldo and was... totally shit.

Certainly the likes of Gonzo, Biscan, Cheyrou, Voronin and far too many others are worthy, but I suppose I hated others more because they seemed to play more, or just got on my tits more for whatever reason (eg Morientes was obviously a decent player, just not for us, and Crouch would have made the subs bench)

I really, really hate(d) all the playersI listed

And Insua *is* fucking rubbish

Actually, I'm a bit shocked that you didn't manage to fit Momo Sissoko in there. Didn't you once describe him as the worst midfielder ever to play for Liverpool?

Yes, but Lucas is actually worse, at least Brains kicked people

Sissoko would deffo be on the bench, though, I really did hate him

Hmmm, the more I think about it, the trickier it gets, because I think Brains had at least *some* high points, and his lows were pretty memorable too

Lucas is more consistently insipid

Hmmm. Who do I hate more?

Nah. Lucas. Deffo.
Sissoko was quite good at times without the ball. It was just a shame when he got it.
Quite good? He was absolutely devastating at times, and capable of destroying the best midfields in the world. Sadly, he was also capable of miscontrolling the ball 100ft in the air. I'd have him back right now though.

Kirkland is downright odd. Why on earth does he wear short sleeves? He seems eager to look even more of a wimp than he actually is.

I know Rafa has bought 47385 keepers, though didn't Houllier buy Dudek and Kirkland on the same day each for big money?

Reina cost about the same as both of them too I think!

He was right-footed Brendan.

Lucas has one moment vs Everton in the last 10 minutes where he won a very important defensive header.. Huuugeee leap.
