Next season - which position do we fill?

Not open for further replies.
1 first team CB
1 youngish CB, if possible
1 dynamic DM to rotate with Lucas
1 attacking player who is better than Coutinho
1 defender who can cover both flanks

Screw getting ince for 7m when the montpellier owner has said belhanda can go for 8m this summer.

Also need two good cb's, defensive midfielder, left back and someone a lot better than hendo and allen.

Is he Moroccan? We've not had much success with players from Morocco

I know this is a bit of a lame point, and one always levelled at Coutinho, who I always wanted, but how come his value has dropped? Not against the signing but just wondering, as he's a well-known player so seems unlikely for the price to reduce without good reason.

This is him here. Offers so much more than ince ever could and for £8m is definitely a bargain seeing as they were quoting £15m last season.

I've been screaming for us to sign Belhanda for about two years.
I'm a bit conflicted about that now. His best position is behind the striker or in a attacking midfield role. Who do we have there atm? Coutinho.
He'll be wasted on the right wing and so will the young Brazilian.

Hopefully Carroll is gone asap. Spend those 17 mill on Papa.

2-3 quality signings that can push us in to the top 4.
Hopefully Reina stays but he could be gone.
Which means we need to sign a quality GK aswell

In one interview the chairman says that they gave him a big salary after they won the league, which they now can't afford because they don't have CL football next season.

I doubt that's the only reason, but interesting nonetheless. I wonder what he's on because if it's not too high then at 8M he's a virtually risk free signing.

Spurs seem to be linked heavily though.

I wouldn't worry about that. If you put enough talented players together then it doesn't matter where they end up playing quite as much.

Not that we've even been linked, but who would you have between Belhanda at 8 mil and Eriksen at 15 mil?

The problem with having an inconsistent team is that you don't really know what you really need. One minute we are playing well and the next minute we are just shit.

Well, as rurikbird said, you then need more consistent performers. Inconsistent players are Johnson, Enrique and Agger. Our main problem is that our inconsistent players are playing at the back, sometimes they have great games, some times rubbish. That's not usually so much of a problem for attacking players, as they can be more easily replaced during a game, but defenders need to give that 7 90% of the time. If we got two better full backs we'd be in a much better state(maybe one of the youths is ready to take a more prominant role).

I would like a few more attackers too, I don't think you can ever have too many.

Dunno about that. Happened to RVP, Ribery and a few other footballers. May just be a case of the women trying to make a quick buck. I see that Sterling is going on trial for assault. Not sure how that happened but he seems a down to earth lad with a level head. Lets see how it pans out.

Maybe a wait and see approach with Remy is best. We are skint if all the articles are to be believed. So if there's better players out there offering better value than Remy, be assured that they'll be considered.

The guy is on something like 75 thousand a week too, is he going to get in the side ahead of Suarez or Sturridge? That's a lot of money for a bench warmer.

Huh? Every article I've seen for months confidently predicts a £20m budget...

PeterHague, not sure where they get that information from but its disconcerting. Maybe its just a ploy by the club to drive down price expectation by selling clubs as we've been raped in the transfer market for a few seasons.

Markeh, there's sacrifices to be made for playing for Liverpool. Remy chose QPR for the money and they went down. He wants to continue to represent his country and he'll get to do that should he sign for us. It wouldnt surprise me if he went to Newcastle.

We need more speed and goals up front and he would certainly do nicely on the cheap.

Yea true but that fact he went to QPR in the first place makes me think he likes the cash, Newcastle wanted him back then too. If he drops his wages and comes at a decent price then that's fair enough, he's also got some experience in the league now too.

What's disconcerting? I think £20m would be very generous after previous spending the last 2 windows!

And the fact we're not in europe. Wouldn't touch remy personally. big time mercenary and would just be a bench warmer anyway.

Its quite simply, we are short of players to challenge. A miserly 20M isn't going to get us any closer to challenging with every other team bound to strengthen.

30 points behind the champions is painful. While we have some prodigious talent coming through our ranks, they a season or 2 away from the first team. We need greater quality in the squad and not just to make up the numbers.

BR knows what he needs to do to get us into the CL places. January window was one of the best ever. Hopefully Gerrard comes back firing and Allen turns out to be the player we all though he is.

Absolutely, on both points.

I'd go for someone who can play primarily as a wing forward, but who can also fill in as a striker. Kind of the opposite of Borini, Sturridge, and even Suarez. Not sure who that would be, though. Anyone youngish and highly rated, in the £20m bracket.

Spurs and Arsenal aren't going to spend more than £20m, in fact probably less than that. Also we just spent a 'miserly' (it really isn't, btw: look at what other teams actually spend net, other than the completely unmatchable duo of Chelsea and City) in January which seemed to come from nowhere. I really think we need to be grateful if a £20m net spend materialises - we've no right to expect even that much IMO.

So £20m, plus hopefully £15m for Carroll. That's £35m to add to the squad that just finished the season. I think that over a full season this squad, including Coutinho and Sturridge, and now that Rodgers is settling into his role, is good for 66-72 points. £35m on top of that should be enough to push very very hard for a CL place.

tell that to Manure, who consistently spend big time on attacking players and have at least 6 attacking players (of 1st team standard) who can score and create goals. What do we have?

They also spent £30m on a centre back who's lasted them over a decade.

How many of them our first teamers who can get score more than 5/10 goals a season? Most are potential. comare what we have to: rooney, horse face, young, valencia, kaqawa, cleverly, hernandez and wellbeck - all these are first teamers and international players.

As for us, I have been generous not bolding Borini, but he is still unproven at this level.

let's dispel this myth a bit that United have goal scorers capable of 5-10 or more goals all over. Not much more than we do or are potentially capable of, the main difference is a third 15+ striker, the rest is much of a muchness, and your Young, Valencia and Wellbeck point doesn't hold water - they got 3 goals in all comps between them this season, that's dire for players of their capabilities (Cleverley only got 4 aswell).

RVP - 30
Hernandez - 18
Rooney - 16
Kagawa - 6
Giggs - 5
Cleverley - 4
Evans - 4
Evra - 4
Nani - 3
Da Silva - 3
Carrick - 2
Butner - 2
Anderson - 2
Wellbeck - 2
Valencia -1
Young - 0

That's in all comps this season. I think Coutinho is capable of 10+, Suarez and Sturridge are capable of matching at least what two of the three United forwards get, then we are also getting goals from Henderson, Gerrard, and have players like Sterling and co coming through. We will no doubt add to the front line, probably to replace Downing which should again see us add a few more.

Ours reads:

Suarez - 30
Sturridge 11 (half a season)
Gerrard - 10
Henderson - 6
Downing - 5
Shelvey - 5
Agger - 3
Coutinho - 3 (half a season)
Allen, Borini, Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Sterling - 2 each
