Surprised Mark? Some have written us off even before a ball has been kicked.
That's a more understandable view point than someone called "Dreambeliever" saying he's not been as excited as this going into a season for five years, when we have been a selling club for the past two years due to our financial state.

At any rate, I'm just happy for football. I didn't get into this shit to learn about how debt is financed.
A selling club?

We sold Alonso because Rafa fucked him over, we're selling Masher because his wife is a pain in the arse. We're trying to get rid of the dross and we've kept hold of our three best players in Gerrard, Torres and Reina.

Yeah, that's a selling club right there. I guess that makes United one too.
While we haven't been a selling club, we certainly haven't been a buying club.
What? We spent £40m last season on Johnson and Aquilani. Whatever the symantics over balancing the books, we still spent money! What did we spend the season before?

People have short memories, we have a season of being in a financial state and we're suddenly a selling club who doesn't buy anyone. Get real.
Had forgotten Johnson was last season alright. This seasons spending has been awful, although it was to be expected.
Not getting at you, it just annoys me that people exaggerate, we're not a selling club. The circumstances around Alonso and Masher were/are beyond our control, the main reason for selling isn't to raise funds, it's because they want to go. United have lost Ronaldo, Beckham and RVN in the last decade, they certainly didn't want to lose Ronaldo, so I guess that they could be called a selling club.

We went into the Summer expecting to lose Torres and Gerrard, and we've managed to keep hold of them, some people on here are acting like our World is caving in on itself. We've had a good Summer, and hopefully that togetherness and new found optimism will continue into the season.

How can you say it's a good summer when we still haven't address the key issue from last season? (replacement for Alonso, backup striker for Torres, left back, wingers)

I was the most optimistic at the beginning of last season but alas how the mighty had fallen!

I have never been so depressed for our team at the beginning of this season.

A least I'm lot less depressed about it than I was in May. 8)

Essentially, if Gerrard reverts to centre midfield, we've replaced Alonso. Wingers? We've added Jovanovic who will play as a wide forward, Pacheco has been given more game time, Cole has been added and can cover wide, we have Kuyt and Maxi too, we're hardly thread bare. Regards left back and a striker, it's pretty obvious we're waiting on the Masher money to address those issues, it's not like the transfer window closes tomorrow.

We've kept hold of our best players and added a few more, it's been far more successful than most expected.

Like Mark, I'm excited at the start of every season. But I'm particularly excited because I think Roy will give a chance to the youngsters.

I don't have even an unrealistic hope for the title, but I'm excited at the fact that the likes of Pacheco, Kelly and Amoo will play a role in the first team. It's something we never saw under either Benitez or Houllier, and I think they'll be a bright spot throughout the season.

Kelly's a fair point actually, he'll be a big improvement on Degen, and can cover across the back four. We've also signed Wilson which alot of people seem to have forgotten about.

I do have more optimism now Rafa has left, but I'm still hugely concerned with the gaps in our squad.

I'm shitting it, I don't envisage a good season but as has been said we will find out after our first 2 games.
.....so does this mean if we get less than 3/4 points from the two games everyone will be hysterical and we'll be written off, with 36 games to spare?
Surprised Mark? Some have written us off even before a ball has been kicked.
It wil tell us were we are in relation to our rivals.

It will also determine confidence for the players a good start should spur us on, a bad start and we could end up same as last season.

Also we haven't improved the squad or increased the depth of the squad so the same issues of last season are still here this season.

If Insua doesn't start, and Poulsen/Mascher and Lucas don't start in midfield, yes, i will be excited!

Yea, selling club isn't the right term for it, but one more year as we've had, and there's not a chance we'll hold on to Torres. That will leave us with an aging Gerrard, having sold our best players three years on the trot. Tell me I'm doom mongering, rather than it being a realistic scenario.

I can't imagine us being as poor as last season. We underperformed, and some of our best players were going through the motions.

I can't imagine it not being a battle though.

I find the thought of another season gut-wrenching and/or depressing. I have no enthusiasm for it. The best I'm hoping for is the occasional mild surprise. I'm nervous that we'll get another injury filled season that will afflict Hodgson in the same way it did Benitez and depressed that the Club's finances will be in the hands of businessmen and not enthusiasts. I'll try not to let it get to me but I know it will. Huzzah!

time for the annual £20 on liverpool to win the league already?

hopefully the excitement gets past the first game this season

I was confident we'll grab a top 4 place but citeh keep spending the cash, but yeah i'm excited but nervous for the kick off..

Maybe the Europa League and that's about it 🙁

Ooops did I say Europa Cup? Optimistically we might be there into the qtrs or semi at best.

Before every season - I like to think that LFC will win everything the season has to offer. I know its highly unlikely but I always like to think we can win everything and continue to believe so until we go out of the competition or have no hope of winning it (usually that only applies to the PL after a certain few months). But what gives me hope this time round - is that perhaps for the first time in a long while we will have a manager who will play maybe a system or give the players the chance to play in their best positions with a regular place being awarded to those that play well.

Define awesome?

I think we'll pick up more points against the lower teams this year, because we'll be more fluid and incisive in attack. Whether or not Hodgson can get the better of the top teams I'm not so sure.

If Gerrard's on form and Torres stays fit then there's no limit to what Liverpool can achieve this season, but I think it would be in our interest to crash out of the Europa League pretty early on so we can prioritise getting back into the CL.

I think I have explained enough in another thread there. Lots of ifs there and we're trying to convince ourselves that the summer additions and kids from reserves are able to step up and deliver.

To me, it's just the same like last season. Last summer we're trying to convince ourselves that Aquilani will be Alonso's replacement, this summer we're hoping that Poulsen will be as good as (if not better than) Mascherano.
So you're more excited this season, where the most optimistic of us are hoping for fourth place at best. Than two seasons ago, where fourth place was all but expected and there was even a small chance of a league title, that nearly panned out?
I said from the off that season we would go agonisingly close but would lack the punch up front and out wide to break the smaller sides down after buying Keane.

And so it was. So ya I was excited but angry all season long. That so easily could have been the year.

So ya with shifted expectations I'm more excited.

I always hoped we could. This season I believe we can. ;D
