Liverpool are preparing to renew their interest in Stoke City captain and former Manchester United trainee Ryan Shawcross according to reports in local Staffordshire press.

The 23-year-old defender is being lined up as an alternative to Birmingham City's Scott Dann after the recently relegated club raised their valuation to far in excess of what Liverpool are willing to pay for him.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is believed to be stepping up his search for a central defender after Monday night's 3-3 friendly draw with Valerenga in Norway once again highlighted Liverpool's frailties at the back having conceded 15 goals in just five pre-season outings.

Shawcross has been previously linked with a move to Anfield, having been targeted by two of Dalglish's predecessors Roy Hodgson and Rafael Benitez, but so far a move to Merseyside has failed to materialise - mainly due to Stoke's reluctance to sell one of their prized assets.

Chester-born Shawcross was formerly on the books of Liverpool's rivals Manchester United, but was deemed surplus to requirements by Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson, and so left Old Trafford permanently in January 2008.

It has been previously suggested that Manchester United would have first refusal on re-signing Shawcross if, or when he eventually leaves the Britannia Stadium - making Liverpool's intentions to make a £12million for the Englishman somewhat futile.

However, if the Reds' interest is deemed to be genuine, it is unlikely United will stand in their way of Shawcross having already strengthened defensively themselves with the summer signing of Phil Jones, who moved to Old Trafford for a fee in the region of £16million.

I don't mind him mate, but he is a bit of a dogged centre back, we've lacked class in the backline for a while. He does have a commanding presence though and I've seen him mark Torres out the game a few times.

Don't know if I qualify, but my half-penny's worth anyway: good player, but still has rough edges. I'd much prefer Cahill.

Would he be a marked improvement on what we have though? and is there much room for improvement in the future? He's only 23 which is a good sign in my books. And of course you qualify JJ! I'm with you, I've always preferred the idea of G.Cahill, I don't think the wallet does though.

Is he a marked improvement on what we have? IMO not in most respects, but if we can rely on his fitness that has to be a bonus compared with Agger and, as you rightly say, Shawcross' age is a plus as well.

By the way, I'm not sure Cahill would cost that much more.

Yeah i wonder what will happen with cahill , his name was one of the most often mentioned for a big move before the end of the season but since it's been all quiet . they will sell if the money is right but it seems their value is way too high . Guess they're prepared to keep him next season .

I don't have an opinion on this subject, but I just want to find out if I'm qualified to state my opinion...mystic?

Did you pass the exam?

One name who has not been mentioned this summer much at all is Hangeland. I think he is top notch and would more than likely cost a fair bit less than, Shawcross, Dann, Cahill or any other English center half we may be after. I suppose hime being 30 now is maybe problem with our startegy of buying young. But he's at about his prime as a center half and to have him for few years while letting likes of Wilson, Kelly, Ayala etc develop could only be a good idea. Plus he reminds me of Sami. I miss Sami

I like Hangeland too, I thought he looked a bit shaky at times last season though, still bagged 7 goals though which is great for a centre half.

Shawcross has the one thing that none of our CBs have. That is aerial presence, the rest I don't think he is much better at if at all to the rest of our defenders. Probably a good buy but not really ideal.

the greek is not good enough though, shawcross is and will stay in the center instead of rushing out to foul or get beaten by an attacker 35 yards from goal.

I'm waiting for the first player to be called the 'new Sami Hyypia' and then that's the one I want

Aren't we all!!!

I've seen that description applied to Hangeland more than once, and FWIW I'd prefer him to Shawcross, though not to Cahill.

Hangeland is 30 though. We need someone younger and better.

I'm not too convinced by Dann or Shawcross though.

Although I'm not sure I can say with much conviction who I really want us to sign. I've liked what I've seen of Cahill and even some of the other talked about centre halves in Europe (Subotic, Lovren, Hummels etc.) but spotting a good defender is really more difficult (than midfielders or attackers) as you need to watch them over a longer stretch of time to judge how good they really are.

Shawcross or Dann for that matter are nothing special and wouldn't be an improvement on the players we have. We should by proven class like Cahill or give Ayala a chance.

Shawcross is better than Skirtle, younger than a passed his sell-by date Carra, Kyriakos was always a two season at most stop gap, a role he completed with credit. That leaves the only one shawcross is not a better option than as Agger, need I say more.

Regards
I agree. Although i think Skrtle is a better defender than given credit for in the main part, and if he could head the ball he would be top class.

Yes but heading the ball should be a reasonable requirement for a CB. I thought he improved quite a bit last season though.

skrtel's positioning is still all over the place, he is a penalty waiting to happen.
So you keep telling us and yet i dont think he has ever conceeded a penalty. If he has its certainly not very many, and nowhere near as many as Carragher.

I never said carra wasn't a penalty waiting to happen 😉
carra has pretty much escaped critisism this pre season, but my gosh he has been SHOCKING, you can only hope it's just rustiness after a long break rather than his age catching up with him.
I dont think Carragher has been a top class defender for about 3 years to be honest. The thinking im sure was that Skrtel and Agger would be out partnership by now but Carragher has remained our best centre back even though he isnt anywhere near the standards you would hope anymore.
Thats why we need a new centre back as an absolute priority.
Wether we get one or not could be a massive influence on our season.

I can see enriqué joining as he will be less than 8m (you'd think) but us spending 12m+ on a defender with just two outgoings so far this transfer window? I'm sorry, I can't see it.
