Mohamed Salah

Salah was just on some tv show in Egypt. Said he couldnt talk about Liverpool but the host said he was close to signing.
Said he currently was playing for Basel, the offers was looked at by his agent and club, would see in the next few days what would happen and that he wanted to join a top club.

Think he'll be our first signing.

This is by far the most impressive clip of him, as it showcases his end product:

He looks to be seriously quick at the very least, and with a lot more touch and balance than someone like Babel, say. I'd certainly want to be able to bring a player like him off the bench.

Still unconvinced by this one. Assaidi had a good highlight package, too.
Yeah, and I'd still rather have him on the bench than Moses!

I'm not fully convinced either, but this is looking pretty certain, so might as well look at the positives.

At least with Sherwood in charge Spurs can't bid for our targets (with any hope of getting them)

Assaidi hasn't really failed on the pitch for us though, when he's played, he's at least looked decent. Not really sure why he was frozen out of the team last season.

Same goes for Aspas, and to an extent Borini as well. Hard to write them off for me, considering how few opportunities we've given them. When they do get chances, it's either in garbage time, or a difficult situation against a top side.

Opposite goes for players over the last couple seasons like Downing, Cissokho, etc who've had more than ample opportunities and been very poor.

I don't really like that clip (the earlier parts anyway). There's a bit of a tendency to kick the ball beyond the defender and chase it, which he seems ok at over the first 5 yards or so, but more of them snippets end up with him losing the ball or getting outmuscled. Plus he's got a look of Pennant about him.

Yep he seems a very kick and run footballer. But then so was sterling last season so maybe rodgers can work his same magic on him. My issue is do we really need him? Shouldnt that money be used to strengthening CM? Why salah when we have a talented player like ibe?

You forget Downing. I bet Aspas also did.
I hope we're not leaking budget on small, piece-meal transfers such as Borini, Aspas and Alberto-- not castigating these players but they have hardly stepped in at the crucial, congested period. So why did we but they in the first place?

Alberto's the strange one. Every time he's had a late cameo he's looked a tidy, technically very able player, albeit a bit lightweight.

Really expected him to get some minutes over the Christmas period.

If I'm not mistaken, sales wise, as long as its outside of their domestic league, its ok (i.e. not restricted to their window opening date)?
I can't imagine they'll sell him early though, unless Swiss league has a winter break. They'll be losing one of their better attacking threats for 3 weeks before they can replace him

They have a winter break, and I think its starts back up about the same time the window opens, which is strange, because if you're off for 3-4weeks not playing football, surely that's the opportune time to have a transfer window.

Yeah, I was checking and realized they are having a break until 2 Feb. I thought it'll be a win win situation to sell early and spend the money on replacements, only to realise their window opens on 18 Jan. So I'd guess between now and then, they can still play hardball.

I agree. He's actually a technically gifted player who is able to receive the ball on the foot furthest from an opponent.

Echo:

[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/mohamed-salah-transfer-latest-liverpool-6458058]Liverpool remain keen on FC Basel forward Mohamed Salah – but reports suggesting a £7million fee has been agreed are wide of the mark.

The Reds have held initial talks with the Swiss outfit but the ECHO understands that any potential deal for the Egypt international remains some way off.

There has been intense speculation in his homeland that Salah would arrive on Merseyside later this week to undergo a medical and pen a five-year deal.

However, that's news to Liverpool officials who have yet to make a breakthrough in discussions with Basel.

There are also a number of other clubs interested in the player known as the 'Egyptian Messi' and the Swiss Super League side are in no rush to sell.

Unless a compromise can be reached, Liverpool are prepared to wait until the summer when Salah, who scored both home and away against Chelsea in the Champions League earlier this season, will enter the final two years of his contract.[/article]

The bit about us willing to wait till summer seems to suggest he's more of a long term signing and we probably have other irons in the fire aimed at strengthening the first team squad?
