Mohamed Salah

I wish we could sign him before Saturday, so he can torture Spurs like this again. "No better than Sterling or Ibe"… right...

Why do people compare him with Ibe/Sterling anyway? He can play in every attacking position and will hopefully replace Moses. We need more attacking quality and Ibe will go out on loan first anyway. His time will come.

He could be great but to pay that money for someone who is gone for 6 weeks in Jan-Feb every two years is too much, any scouting of African players should take this into account.

Sure, but you know I'm not advocating buying another Downing. We should be after players who are comfortable on the wing, but can play in a variety of attacking positions and are intelligent to interchange with their teammates, make runs and find space. My ideal "winger" is someone like Reus or Müller. Salah seems to be exactly that type of player: versatile, quick, skillful, and with good eye for a pass.

Like i said i can only go by that youtube but he seems more like a winger than an attacking midfielder which is what we more need. Salal seems nothing like Mkhitaryan at all. So yeah we need a Mkhitaryan type player not an attacking winger. We need an attacking midfield, left back and backup striker before we should go for a player like Salal.

I also wonder if he is going to observe Ramadan each year.

Next yr Ramadan will start at the beginning of July so he should be ok, well it'll be during preseason training

I think we exercised our luck regarding players who are a gamble with Sturridge and Couthino, and also we filled our squad already with players like aspas and Alberto, so no need for squad players.
Next step for us is to break the bank for one definitive starter each year since our squad is balanced and young and that'll take us to the next level.

I don't doubt the need for more quality attacking midfielders it's just the term winger I'm hung up on, we're playing with our fullbacks to give us width and the likes of Henderson and Coutinho are playing inside of them. We don't need actual wide men at the moment, a clever Coutinho, Silva, Mata type would be great but any midfielder who likes to get chalk on their boots doesn't suit the current system imo.

A Mkhitaryan to play through the middle would be excellent or another Coutinho, a top left back would probably add a great deal too in an attacking sense.

Agreed, but we do need to constantly improve the squad, so while Glen is moaning that interest in this lad clearly means that we're not prioritising DM or fullback, it's a bit short sighted really to not think we should be in for quality players when they become available.

We clearly wanted another attacker in the Summer, which is why we got lumbered with Moses, because we missed out on a top attacker.

This is where I disagree with most of the posters here. I think an attacking midfielder/winger is MUCH more of a priority for us than a CM/DM. I really don't get all the people who think a M'Villa or Wanyama would improve us so much. Lucas might not be the best DM in the world, but he is not that bad really and far from our main problem. I'm not at all sure M'Villa is a better player than Lucas right now (his team is currently 11th out of 16 in Russian Premier league and I didn't hear any particular plaudits about his performance from pundits or fans), but even if he were, for the team as a whole it would be a marginal gain at best.

I think a quality attacker like Mkhitaryan or Konoplyanka or, in this case, Salah would improve us much more. People say we are ok on the wings but lacking in CM – but right now the fact of the matter is that we have a CM (Henderson) playing on the wings – he has started every single game and has a grand total of 1 goal and 1 assist in all competitions to show for it. We also have Moses, who is talented but doesn't work hard enough on the pitch to be a starter for Rodgers, Aspas who didn't settle well and a couple of talented and raw kids. Combined, all of our "attacking midfield" players have 4 goals and 3 assists in all competitions – a really paltry return with the season approaching the half-point.

I think that's a big problem, especially now that our second-best striker (Sturridge) and our top assist man (Gerrard) are both out until late January. Who is going to replace them? If you could pick any player in the world to make our team stronger, do you really think a Mascherano who replaces Lucas would make more of a difference than, say a Ribery who replaces Sterling, Henderson or Moses? If we had a really fearsome attacker to complement Suarez and Coutinho, teams would be afraid to cross halfway line when playing us and Allen, Henderson and Lucas (+ Gerrard when he is back) would manage CM between them with no problems.

Spot on.

Basel lost to Schalke to dropped out of the CL – good news for anyone hoping to sign Salah in January.

Apparently Rodgers has been spotted at the Schalke-Basel game yesterday. Some people think he was watching Draxler, but more likely it's Salah.

Draxler might develop into a star, but so far this season he is... just OK. Some flashes of skill, but not a consistent attacking threat. If we had Draxler in the team now, he would not make us much stronger and set the Premier League alight right away. I think he made the right decision to stay at Schalke for now; he needs time to develop without too much pressure and media hype.

He could be the player we thought Assadi could be, a bit unpredictable, a bit shit, a bit of genius......

Screw it, I think Salah will be a good signing.
Managed to find a Basel game online and I must say that he's extremely talented.
Rodgers wants him on the right. He's left footed but has a decent right foot as well. Quick, tricky, with decent ball control and finishing.
Would have preferred Yarmolenko, though.

If thats true it doesn't look like we will be buying a proper midfielder this window, maybe the Pastore/Moura loan is a goer then because surely the middle of the park is priority?

The Montoya price getting banded around is 7 mill isn't it? so that and 12 mill for Salah makes around 20 mill, same as last Jan.

Salah, Montoya and Pastore/Moura loan, can't complain at that.

Not in the least bit impressed with the videos in this thread. I'm not sure another "tricky" winger with no end product is really what we need.

His stats aren't too shabby.
4 goals in 12 starts this season for Basel in the swiss league.
2 goals in the CL.

Decent number for a winger, imo. No one in our current squad has done any better.

for 10m or thereabouts this deal could be an acceptable risk. I would hope this outlay will not detract from spending on a world class central mid.

Is 20 goals in 80 games and 17 in 24 for Egypt a player with no end product? Do we expect our wingers to score more than that??
