Is 20 goals in 80 games and 17 in 24 for Egypt a player with no end product? Do we expect our wingers to score more than that??

Switzerland and African teams are - in general - not the greatest barometer ... I just hope we're not making a mistake here - another good jan transfer window and we're pushing more than just top 4...

for 10m or thereabouts this deal could be an acceptable risk. I would hope this outlay will not detract from spending on a world class central mid.

That's the worry for me-- spending money on acceptable players. We need to be making real upgrades not piece-meal additions. We already have enough of acceptable players.

Well, I guess Rodgers thinks we don't. We were looking at various players to play out wide in the summer and we ended up signing Moses on loan. If there is one thing that is being made abundantly clear, it's that Rodgers doesn't think that Aspas / Sterling / Ibe are enough and he's probably right.

I've not seen much of this Salah guy but he seems to fall more on the side of gamble rather than stealing a march on well regarded quality.

21 years old and won most promising African player last year. Think this kid has something about him.
Its a risk but for the right fee it could pay off.
Ibe will go out on loan. Moses doesnt look interested and we need a right winger/attacking mid.

Which begs the question, why did we sign Aspas in the first place?

Just reminds me of townsend or lennon. I've no problem with the signing as long as it doesn't affect us getting a quality CM and LB. surely those positions are a higher priority.

It depends what's available. It's still fairly obvious we need to add to the attack, midfield is arguably a bigger priority, but maybe we want to spend big there and it might be better to wait until the Summer when players hands aren't tied because of club commitments, Europe, etc.

Then wouldn't it be better to save the money and use Sterling\Ibe\Moses\Aspas\Alberto\recall someone and not buy another potentially mediocre player?

I think Rodgers got us to the point where we can get to the next level by buying quality and not quantity and that means these kind of transfers are mistakes and I really hope we use all our budget on proven Quality even if it means buying no one this window, I'd rather we recall everyone.

I don't know, Coutinho wasn't proven quality by any stretch and look at him now. I get people reservations though, but this lad has looked decent in the CL so he's shown (to a degree) that he can play against quality opposition. I've got no faith at the minute in Moses (too lazy) or Sterling, Alberto and Ibe (promising, but inexperienced). Hopefully we can see Aspas get a bit of game time in the next few weeks and maybe see some of the form he showed in pre-season. Maybe.

Griezmann wont go for 15-17 mill, and he's got every club in Europe after him.
I'd rather sign him aswell but he'll cost a fortune

Coutinho shouldn't have gone for 8.5 either ... get a good deal in early, and anything is possible. I'd rather we push for him ... However, if we rid ourselves of Moses, than a winger is important

I'd love to sign Griezmann.

Edit: Seems as though he has a release clause of 25 mill.

Talking of bargains, and Coutinho and Sturridge are examples of such, didn't Cabaye only cost the maggies just under £10 million. A good scouting network certainly helps. Martinez seems to have a good eye, both here in Blighty and overseas.

Having read posts on this thread, many are of the view that CM is more of a priority, however if you look at the distribution of goals, the vast majority have been scored by Suarez and Sturridge, with the likes of Coutinho, Moses, Sterling and Henderson scoring about 1 or 2 goals. Gerrard scoring very rarely from open play, with his goals mainly coming via pens.

It is clear that we need to solve this problem as we need more players to get us goals, not only relieving pressure on our strikers but giving other teams someone else to worry about.

PS I can assure you I am not here to sell anything, well except for some magic beans.

I guess for me it boils down to not trying to accomplish too much during a particular time frame. We're not City or Chelsea and if we can't afford to sort out all our problems in one fell swoop then I'd rather we didn't try. We've seen that compromises in these situations often end up costing more in the long run anyway. It's not worth it.

If Salah is the right player regardless of cost, fine. I haven't seen enough of him to judge if he's any good but at least I'll have confidence in the conviction of the clubs beliefs. If we're only going for him because we feel like with other priorities we can't afford to address the position properly then it's potentially another expensive gamble that we can ill-afford.

His stats aren't too shabby.
4 goals in 12 starts this season for Basel in the swiss league.
2 goals in the CL.

Decent number for a winger, imo. No one in our current squad has done any better.

Our players are playing in the Premier League, though. A career record of 1 goal every 4 games playing in Egypt and Switzerland is less than remarkable.

For a winger? His stats are better than Shaqiri before he left. He's got 17 in 24 for Egypt.
