(No taking into consideration how successful they might or might not have been)
Besides missing out on our targets - some of whom we seemed to be working on/towards for a considerable amount of time, another sticking point seems to be the lack of alternatives available. Of course, we don't want a backup option just for the sake of it, but one thing for sure is we failed to bring in anyone else if we missed out on our top targets. By being 2nd or 3rd choice, the player doesn't necessarily has to be a worse/poorer one, does he? Surely we have to be prepared to have targets snatched away from under our noses, especially given our lack of European (and CL) football?

Money talks. Chelsea can stroll in, offer the club an extra 5mill, the player an extra 20k a week, an extra 1mill signing on fee, and extra 1mill for the agent etc. We can't do that.
This is why we keep getting bossed when trying to sign players, lots of teams have more money than us. And when it comes down to us and them, we come 2nd.

If no one else is interested in a player, we might have a chance.

If the cunt doesn't care that he won't play and wants to stew on Chelski's bench for 4 years he can fuck right off anyway, the last thing we need is another Diao.

Mourinhos comments about him is just bizzarre. But if true it just shows how incredibly inept we are at closing transfers.

Agree with you. I also still think that there are players out there who want to play for Liverpool, and I like players that want to play for us. If a few more quid turns their head to play for a load of cunts like Chelsea then they can fuck off.

If we get deals done quickly - and quietly - enough, other clubs won't necessarily get the chance to gazump us, however rich they are.

But again - why would an agent not ensure other clubs are given the chance ?

That's not down to us.

The problem there JJ are the agents who are out to get the best deal for themselves. Oh and their clients of course.

Ross has a good point and the agent will nearly always want other clubs to get involved.
I'd like to know if the low balling bid tactic is true though as we seem to piss off a lot of clubs with how we do our negotiations. I E If the verbal agreement is 10 mill then bid 10 mill and dont start with a written 7 mill bid.

What about getting Cortese? Seem to have done very good job for Southampton, bar Osvaldo and Ramirez.

Fair comment gentlemen, but there must be ways round that now and then in individual cases (perhaps along the lines of macca's reference earlier to Kenny's intervention over the Bellers deal) or most of the time only the richest clubs would be signing anybody.

The Cortese suggestion is an interesting one, but I wonder whether he'd want too much of a say for our owners' liking.

Good shout. He never really got a chance though but probably wasnt good enough to begin with.

That's absolutely the case. In the age of agents, unless they get a big bung from the off, it isn't in their interest to allow a quiet deal to go through.

The agent and money talks are definitely true but how likely would he have featured in Chelsea's wanted list as of our initial interest (e.g. this thread was started citing a rumour on 9 Dec 2013)? Not trying to point fingers (who am I to when I'm not in the know) or brush off the challenges faced when signing players but if the people in charge also uses the same reason and do not see/act on any areas for improvement in our transfer process/procedure, then we can expect more of the same.

Clubs accept best fee offered.

If given the choice Egyptian (and every other countries) footballers go where the best money is.

End.

I heard that was the deal breaker with Willian. We baulked at giving his handler the additional £5 million or so he had demanded.

Chelsea currently have 23 players out on loan....

Ayre: Hello?
Basel: Ahh, Mr Ayre..you want to discuss Salah?
Ayre: Um no..
Basel: Then why are you calling us?
Ayre: Do you sell motorbikes?

I get the feeling that Rodgers is still trying to convince Salah to choose us, hence his and Mourinho's recent comments about the transfer.

I also think that his comment about not wanting to sign squad players is meant to re-enforce his message to Salah.

Like 90% of the posts here though, this is based on very little.

Let's close this already. Its way too long and depressing. Lets hope he's a bullet dodged and breaks his fucking leg.

Is it strange that Salah doesn't appear to have put pen to paper yet? He's not exactly busting a gut to sew the deal up.

No, it's not strange

Let's not expect anything other than him signing the deal today.

For our own sanity
