Mignolet

We love a good moan on here dont we and we also love to write people off.

First season in a Liverpool shirt and contributes to maybe winning the title. I'd say that gives him more than enough credit for getting at least 1 more season, maybe 2.
How many different defensive line ups has he played behind this season? Once we got a settled defence and played the same back 5 for a number of games he looked much better aswell. Quelle fucking surprise.

He's got a lot of work to do and has been at fault for some goals. But he's done more than enoug to keep on working to improve and be our nr 1 next season.
The whole team is fucking nervy at times given where we are in the table. That is bound to be seen in our new keeper aswell.
People wanting Pepe back has unbelievable short and selective memories.

A fucking terrible goalie is the worst piece of shite I've read in quite a while on here. Awful.
If he doesnt improve in the areas he needs to during next season I'd start to worry. Not now.

He's a decent goalie who has rarely let us down and is amongst the best keepers in the division. He's not worth £10m though, maybe £6m, and the standard of keepers in the EPL is quite poor at present. I have faith in him but would suggest that his position is one we should be looking to improve on if we're to compete at the top table in Euope next season. In other words he's "good" but I want "world class".

Agree with this completely.

One thing I'll say works against him is his style.

This side & style we play screams for a sweeper keeper. Ironically, this is the first time we haven't had one at least partway there & that likes coming out early between the sticks for, well, fucking forever.

I think we'll get a keeper in the summer who does like to come out early & claim stuff.

He does have a penchant for making the odd error but by and large he is a great shotstopper. We'll beat the Chavs. No problem there. They're coming to a red hot and loud Fortress Anfield.

Why is SCM desperately searching for things to worry about? Are people hoping the counter argument will reassure them, or is it just that we/you are all so used to failing that you are trying to identify the cause of inevitable failure ahead of time?

We thrive to be the best. Our style of play inevitably will give goals away throughout a season but not multiple goals almost every game.
The goalkeeper and back four have been at fault on multiple, multiple occasions, and this thread is a lot of us looking at one of those problem positions, the 'keeper.
I'd prefer to a have a better goalie with a hard as fuck mentality. As would others. What's wrong with that?

There's a lot of talk of us signing Marshall from Cardiff to give Ming competition. I think it is a very good idea.

I don't.

Mignolet isn't dodgy because of a lack of competition. He just isn't particularly good. I'm not convinced Marshall is really good enough for us either. We need a great first choice before we worry about a lack of competition.

I'd probably stick with Mignolet for another season and then look at replacing him next summer, because he's not so bad to make his position an urgent priority.

He's basically another Westerveld. Reasonably good but not LFC standard.

Mignolet is relative young and its easy to forget that. The lad will improve with some competition.

Marshall has been the best keeper in the Prem this year. I also don't like that we're always an injury away from Jones coming in, a man who looks positively frightened of the football.

He's been great, but keepers are notorious for looking great in struggling sides but struggling in great sides. Not necessarily, obviously, but the two jobs are pretty different.

If he's good enough to come in as first choice, great. But I wouldn't be signing him just as competition, personally.

According to OPTA he's made 5 errors leading to goals in 35 games this season.
So an error leading to a goal every 7th game then, hardly every game...

So after last week's clanger, he is not due for another until the 3rd-4th week of next season!

Even in respect of having a better reserve (though I do think keepers need competition as much as any other player). Out of any of the top sides, we have the poorest back up keeper. As I say, we're one injury away from Jones being number 1. That's not acceptable.

Isn't Marshall too good to be back up though? Personally the second choice goalie isn't something I tend to worry about, really. It's one of those problems you never seem able to solve. GKs hardly ever get injured, or even often lose form enough to warrant the disruption of dropping them. That means 2nd choice keepers basically never play, which means they're either very old, very young, or shit. I can't really think of a single decent back up we've had for about the last 10 years, maybe longer.

Ideally you'd have one as cover and for competition, but you get away without it 95% of the time.

I disagree with the idea that it causes a massive disruption to drop them. I also think keepers can learn from one another. Hart probably benefitted from being dropped this year, for instance. And I think the extra big games we'll be playing warrants having a good second choice keeper. Even a 5% risk of Jones playing if we say got to the CL semis, is 5% too much.

Marshall makes Brad Jones look like a technical wizard though.
Dont think we should spend 6 mill on him. He's not suited to how we play at all.

Better to spend thatish sum on that Forest keeper or someone similar.
He can be Mings back up for a while and then probably take his place.

While Jones isn't the best around, I think I wouldn't be too far out in saying that City and Everton aren't in that much better shape (if not worse shape) than us with Pantilimon and Robles (at least right now, with his lesser experience) as their second choice.

Until last season, Chelsea still had Ross Turnbull and Henrique Hilario as their 2nd and 3rd choice keepers. So it seems having a suspect keeper as second choice isn't too uncommon a thing around, even for the top clubs. It's understandable, given that keepers don't get rotated much so having a good keeper on the bench is pretty much an insurance rather than an investment with immediate returns.

I think that is a bit too bold a statement - the real test is someone doing nothing for 70 min and then pulling out a top drawer save. Every year relegation bound sides have keepers that impress, simply by virtue of the sheer chances they face

Or how about we act like one of the biggest clubs in the world and go and get Casillas or another goalkeeper of similar ilk?

Recent times have been tough but we need to get back to acting and thinking like a massive club, we are one afterall.

He can kick a ball out when it rolls towards him. I like that. if he teaches Ming only that, he'll be worth the money.

Hes fucking shit. You low expectation havin motherfucker.

His con' seem generally more than outweighed by his pro's. Don't get me wrong he worries the shit out of me. I agree with Oncey to an extent, he needs to get to know when to come off his line, and he needs a killer instinct when he taking the ball in the air. Sit him down with a load of vids of Grob and Ray C, make him see how they come aggressively with a leading knee, they took no prisoners.
I think the keeper and the defence are making each other nervous
Regards
We need another decent keeper anyway as Brad makes me nervous too.

Our league challenge is built on the front 6 not the back 5.
With good reason.
Hes shite.

We deserve credit then for winning it with 6 men and not 11. I'll bet Rodgers agrees completly.
Hopefully and thankfully he has a bit more patience with his players then some of our fans.

We havent had the same back 5 for many games though. There are bound to be communication issues. We have had so many different CB partnerships aswell.
Once we had a settled back 5 we saw a better defensive performance from the whole team.

I'd rather we looked at replacing Achterberg first. He doesnt fill me with confidence.

Spend the money on the team not a new GK. It doesnt need fixing. If he hasnt stepped up next season on the areas he needs to work on, then look at replacing him.

He's won us far more points than he's dropped for us. So he's a credit to this title challenging team aswell.

Like HO says hes been bailed out by the front 6, thats whats happened, papered over his definciences, peoples eyes haven't been focussed on him, if it wasn't for our shit hot attack then Mignolet would have been completely exposed and got a lot more grief, because were scoring for fun wider questions about him are on the back burner.

Hes shite.

Seems like Oncy's playing a blinder here. Completely setting Ming up to save an unjustly awarded penalty and be the hero. He will then claim was a clever reverse psychology maneuver and that he deserves credit for saving our dream - which, of course, he will and we will provide.

Is it unlucky to call this out in advance?

That's a stupid argument though because we would concede less if we were less aggressive in attack.

Sakho, Skrtel, and Mignolet are all fine. Jose Enrique is good enough if he can recover from his injury. Flanni is good enough as a third choice utility option.

Means we need to sign a quality RB for the back five, and no more. If Enrique is done, also a LB.

You do know our style of play invites a lot of pressure to our defence/goalkeeper right SL?
The amount of saves he's made is 4th the most in the league. Which is quite extreme and shows how much he has contributed to where we are now.

Ah well, time to discuss winning the league instead.
Ming will be here next season so tough luck for those who dont rate him.
