Micah Richards and other forgotten players

Micah Richards, like Babel, is one of those players who dominated asily at underage level because of their physical gifts. Neither developed as footballers as they moved into senior teams.

What happened to Joe Cole ?

Babel is actually doing not so bad these days:

====

A career-high 15 goals in all competitions during the 2017/18 season put Babel back on the international map.

On 7 October 2017 Babel was called up by Advocaat for the 3-1 World Cup qualifier win against Belarus.

Three days later he assisted Robben in a 2-0 win over Sweden, although it wasn’t enough to secure qualification for the 2018 World Cup

The 31-year-old has been included in every squad since as Ronald Koeman looks to take the Netherlands, minus the ‘golden generation’, out of the darkness.

By the time Euro 2020 comes around Babel will be 33. But that might not be a bad thing as Koeman looks for experience amongst the young core of Matthijs de Ligt, Donny van de Beek and Frenkie de Jong.

Let’s not forget, age doesn’t apply when you’ve got the elixir of life.

I remembered watching a Pablo Aimar-inspired Valencia tore Houllier's team apart during a pre-season friendly at Anfield and was absolutely dumbfounded with the wizardry of Aimar. Watching it a few rows behind the first team bench made it even more surreal.

Fast forward about 10 years later, last I heard he can't even a game at the dizzy heights of the Malaysian league.

Marcus Babbel is currently managing West Sydney Wanderers - although potentially not for much longer.

He turned up for one game looking like hed raided Chris Eubanks wardrobe, didnt endear him to the Western Sydney faithful, hed be better off with a tracksuit and some neck tattoos

The new Joe Cole is still playing in Scotland having moved on from some unfortunate legal troubles.

In the early hours of 7 October 2012, Hammill was involved in an altercation outside a Liverpool nightclub while celebrating a friend's birthday and was arrested for assaulting two female paramedics. The paramedics had attended the scene after Hammill had collapsed inside the club drunk and been taken outside. He was formally charged with two counts of assault on 27 October, to which he pleaded guilty on 12 November. On 20 November 2012 he was sentenced to 12 weeks of jail suspended for 12 months, 150 hours of unpaid work and to pay £350 to each of the paramedics. Hammill later told The Huddersfield Examiner that he regretted his action.

I was at that game. He was fucking brilliant tbf

Meanwhile in China - Shanghai have released Obafemi Martins and signed Demba Ba instead

La Liga title after that probably helped as well!

No doubt, but what I heard was that in the course of the search for the new manager the players were asked which the best team was that they'd played against lately, and there was a chorus of admiration for Valencia and the way Rafa had got them playing against us. Hope he doesn't do it again today. 😵

To be fair to Aimar he’s nearly 40 years of age. He was probably only topping up his pension. An unbelievable player in his prime.

Probably the purest example of a #10 position player – an almost extinct breed nowadays. Ozil, Isco and James Rodriguez are carrying the torch, by not being used by their respective clubs.
