To think City paid £50m for Stones, Arsenal £35m for Mustafi, Chelsea £32m for Luiz, and Man U £30m for Bailly, yet we got Matip for free, such a snip..

I love watching him play.. Solid & dependable centre back..

He doesn't look quite sure of his defensive colleagues, understandably, but he's a reassuring presence who'll get better as the season continues.

His presence made Lovren noticeably calmer, compared to last season. First name on the team-sheet for me.

My son & I were discussing Matip today and he commented that it feels like he has been at the club for years. It's rare a new signing from a different league just arrives and hits the ground running like Matip has. Boss.

The only thing he is not doing at the moment is scoring from set plays. He is usually a good bet for at least 4 league goals per season – hopefully he'll get one and that will open the floodgates. Didn't have much of a chance today with Olsson all over him like a koala hugging a tree.

He hasn't had time to adapt to the Prem yet. He's up against giants in the prem and they're well aware of his ability in the air.

He's fantastic, I feel so much calm when crosses come in the box now because he's cleared everything.

He's very cool on the ball, such a upgrade on skrtel last season.

Still relatively young as well, he's a 20-25m CB.

That was a clear cut penalty - I really wish refs would them more often for that infringement. If he scores 4 per season (I thought it was more) then that's 1:10 PL matches or in other words put the house on him scoring vs. Palace !

He'll have difficulties doing that here, cos we're incredibly, unfathomably, shite at set pieces.

Think its less about matips ability and more our inability to create a decent opportunity for him

Actually it's less than that, I just looked and he's scored 3 Bundesliga goals in each of the past 4 seasons where he started the majority of the games. It's still a good ratio and another good thing is, he usually gets a similar number of assists as well – hopefully we'll see this soon as well, particularly in the form of knockdowns from set plays.

He's been close a few times though. Hit the bar against Spurs.

Knew he was quality and he has been fantastic for us.
Think we have conceded 6 goals in the last 9 games after Burnley.
No goals conceded from open play in the last 5 games.
Matip has been vital for us.
One of the first names on the teamsheet.

So far Stones has been OK, but nothing like a £50M player. At times he looks so clumsy. Mustafi has filled a need at Arsenal, good signing for them. Luiz is Luiz... I doubt Conte would have gone for him if it was up to him. Bailly looks good, very aggressive.

At this point int he season, I would say Matip looks like the best buy of the bunch (even not taking the prices into account) – unlike Bailly and Mustafi he is the "leader", rather than a reactive type of CB and those are much harder to find. His presence made Lovren a lot more comfortable as he can now be the no-nonsense defender he's always been inclined to be.

The new Hyppia
Whoa there boy!

I've been impressed by Matip, but Hyppia proved himself over a few seasons & was incredibly impressive throughout, having some of Europe's best strikers in his pocket in games, knowing exactly how to wind up & distract the opposition's best players at set pieces (like by sticking his extraordinarily long tongue down their ear just before the ball was played in from a corner!) & cementing the bedrock upon which we won many cups.

I hope in a couple of seasons we can make the comparison correctly, but we're a long way from that yet.

He just looks the business in every department, of course it's early days but he certainly looks to have everything in his locker

Matip looks boss, nice to have a calm presence at the back. Let's hope he can make our goalkeepers better, rather than them making him shit

rurikbird moved to the top of the list in terms of posters whose player recommendations I lookout for.

He was for this signing from day one and I remember a line in a post he made when we were closing in on Matip, something alone the lines of:

"This is the sort of signing Bayern Munich make, not us".
Rurikbird has always really known his stuff.
