So Downing played on the right?

Why didn't one of us predict that could happen I wonder??

Oh, that's right. I did.
He played on the left mostly, he just got switched around to try out different things. Had a good game anyway, his delivery was mostly excellent bar a five minute spell where he hit a couple wayward.

Ok... So we're pretty much agreed, this season is pretty much a write-off.

We should probably start preparing for next season now.

Thought Shelvey did well when he came on, good industry and passing. He gives the ball away occasionally but usually because he tries to be ambitious with his passes. Good player in the making, unlucky not to score. Aquilani again was excellent.

Yep, agree with all that. Carroll was also good and linked up well with Downing. Agger also had a good game, but Carra was hapeless.

Left back is a must though, as Robbo and Flanagan arent good enough yet.

This was very worrying. Most players from Vålerenga plays in the third tier here in Norway. And they still managed to move their feet quicker than Adam and Spearing. Carra, GlenJo, Kuyt, Henderson and Robinon were shocking poor. Charlie Adams best run the whole night was when he was subbed. I know that Kenny really wants british players to be better, and he will play Adam week in and week out at the start, but there is no doubt in my mind that both Raul and Aquaman is far better footballers than him.

He played there in maybe 10 minutes of the entire game. Big wooopdy do.

Yeah but Hansern, the point is that Ryan was the only person in the whole wide world who even considered this a possibility. I sat through a few youtube videos full of Downing cutting in from the right for Villa and wasn't able to make that huge cognitive leap.

Props to Ryan.

He played there for most of the first half.

On the left for most of the second though.

I love Jonjo. He's a beast. Very disappointed with Adam though.

I have a feeling Jonjo is going to be battling Adam for a first team slot soon.

With Lucas and Spearing slugging it out for the other.

hopefully adam improves as the seasons wears on as I haven't been impressed with him at all, henderson looks far more accomplised despite being younger.

I think the issue atm is trying to work how and precisely where Adam fits in, ie in the holding role or slightly more advanced. He spent alot of yesterdays game in our half when it's clear he can do most damage further up field. His fitness/stamina levels have always been a concern though, Spud was like that for a couple of years and it took a long time for us to get him up to speed.

For one, Adam needs to realize that the Hollywood ball stuff should be left on the playground. It's one thing spraying the ball right on the penny like Xabi, quite another sending hopefully long through balls and diagonals into space leaving our forwards and midfielders with acres of grass to eat up and a defender to muscle past.

It'll be useful when the likes of Suarez are there, but in moderation obv. There's no point playing long hopeful balls over the top for Carroll to chase, Carragher does that much.

Adam will have to start moving his not-to-skinny ass to fit in. It is not enough to pass the ball accurate if you dont move to receive it again in a different position. His jogging around yesterday was pathetic....

No point eulogising over Aqua's pre-season displays v third rate Norwegians. Once the likes of the Boltons and Sunderlands waltz into town, he'll need the first aid kit again.
Which is why Dalglish wants Adam more than he does Aquilani.

He didnt. He played there for about 10 minutes from the start when we tried some shite formation that were all over the place. After that he played mainly on the left wing, but they did change positions one time at the end of the first half.

I was seated at the half way line so I could see where he was playing with my own 2 eyes.

Ill start of by saying i expected a huge game from the boy's that started the game, but i was left very disappointed by their performance. I know its only pre season but that was a strong team out there. I know where still missing suarez, gerrard & meireles which they will make a massive difference when they come back, but i cant help feeling where still lacking any speed or creativity within the team except downing & henderson that started in this game. Our backline was in shambles in particular johnson. Charlie adams looked slow & off the pace & was letting players run past him the whole game. I thought henderson & downing played well. Carroll looked ok in patches. Kuyt offered nothing as usual & it was very fustrating watching him when he got into good positions & stuff up, but then again thats kuyt for you. Plz next time we spend 100 million we actually by some ATTACKING players with SPEED that can actually take someone on and a shoot & NOT WASTE MONEY by buying a slow players in positions we already have plenty off i e charlie adams & putting the money to positions we actually need like LB, CB, LW & striker . Please get rid of players like kyrgiakos, poulsen, cole, jovanovic, wilson, maxi, degen,el zahr, insua, & dirk kuyt that don't offer anything to the team. These players are on big wages that could be actually spent on bringing in good players that would actually make a difference to the team. Put all thoes players together & they wouldn't make one decent player but we still have them on our books wasting money. John w henry says he wants a top four finish which is understandable after spending 100 milllion, we probably could achieve that target if they play to their potential but everything else needs to fall into place like no injuries cause we dont have a big enough squad with qualith coming of the bench & hopefully some calls go our way from the refs.

who assisted Carroll's goal yesterday? Couldn't make them out in the video, was it Henderson?

Wasn't it Downing?

Yeah it was Downing.

This was my initial thought, but wasn't the crosser wearing number 11? Or did I have a really shit video.

Aquilani did more in 10 minutes then most of the team did in the first 80.

Like I've always said, he's a great option to come off the bench when we need goals. Hopefully Kenny thinks that's enough justification to keep him.

What? Floydy slagging off Dirk?

*faints*
According to opta:
Wolves Steven Fletcher was the most clinical finisher in the premier league last season requiring only 3.1 chances to score a goal.
2nd was Javier Hernandez on 3.3
3rd was Dirk Kuyt on 3.8

Wayne Rooney required 7.1 attempts to score.

There were lots of players completely off the pace last night, not just Adam.

Johnson, who is normally pretty quick, was left for dead on a few occasions as was Robinson who is also quite speedy.
Pretty much all of the team looked pretty flat in fact.

So either the whole team is way behind on their fitness levels, which would be a huge worry and a very poor reflection on the club or else we are not preparing for these friendlies in the same manner in which we would a competitive fixture.

I know that prior to some of the earlier matches we apparently had pretty much full training sessions in the mornings prior to the game.
Who is to say that it was much different yesterday.

showing that these kind of statistics are virtually meaningless.
